Objective To study the serum levels of melatonin,tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and the correlation with disability.Methods Forty patients with multiple sclerosis were collected as MS group and 30 healthy participants were collected as control group.Serum levels of melatonin and cytokines,including IFN-γ and TNF-,were detected in all participants by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method;disability status of patients with MS was evaluated by EDSS scale.The relevant analysis between serum melatonin,TNF-α,IFN-γ levels and EDSS score in patients with MS was conducted.Results The concentration of serum melatonin in MS group was significantly lower than control group (P＜0.01).TNF-α levels were higher than control group (P＜0.05) and the difference was statistically significant between MS patients and control group.Among MS group and control group,no significant correlation with the serum levels of IFN-γ was seen.The serum melatonin level was inversely correlated with EDSS score in MS patients (r =-0.76,P＜0.01),and positively correlated with TNF-α (r =0.83,P＜0.01) and as compared to IFN-γ,no significant correlation was found (r =0.17,P＞0.05).Conclusion The decrease of melatonin and increase of TNF-α can be a factor in the inflammatory reaction in patients with MS,and is closely related with dysfunction occurring in multiple sclerosis.Serum melatonin and TNF-α can be used as laboratory indicators to monitor clinical curative effect and evaluate prognosis of MS.

Using agar plate proliferation experiment and double-layer agar plate proliferation experiment (eliminating the effects of organic acid and H_2O_2, decreased after treatment with trypsin and papain) to screen a LAB of Bacteriocins P158 which has antibacterial action to Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis. P158 was isolated from fermented glutinous rice. Through detection of its appearance, physiological and biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA gene sequence homology analysis, it was identified as Lactobacillus plantarum.

Objective To study the effect of chest wall vibration therapy on bronchiolitis. Methods A total of 64 patients with bronchiolitis were divided into an experimental group and a control group, the former included 34 cases and the latter included 30 cases. The experimental group received both routine treatment and chest wall vi- bration, while the control group only received routine treatment. PaO_2, PaCO_2, SaO_2, Heart Rate (HR) and Respi- ration (R) were observed, respectively, in the experimental group and the control group at the beginning and the end of the third day. Time needed for expectoration and length of hospital stay in the two groups were observed. Results It was shown that PaO_2, PaCO_2, SaO_2 , HR, R were significantly improved at the end of the third day when compared with those at the beginning in both groups(P

Objective To explore the clinical characteristics and treatment of Caroli′s disease in children.Methods The clinical data,laboratory examination and radiological feature of 8 children with Caroli′s disease between Feb.1998 and Dec.2007 were analyzed retrospectively.All children underwent CT and abdominal ultrasonogram.Results Five cases of the 8 children were male and 3 cases were female.The mean age was 6.3 years old.The cases′ history were from 5 days to 4 months.The clinical symptoms showed that 3 cases had hematemesis,5 cases had hepatosplenomegaly,and 1 case had fever and turbid urine.Of the total 8 cases,5 cases were hepatic fibrosis and liver cirrhosis and hepatosplenomegaly,3 cases were portal hypertension,and 1 case had cholangitis.The other 3 cases were simple types.One case had infantile polycystic kidney disease.Laboratory analysis revealed 2 cases had dysfunction of liver and 1 dysfunction of renal.The imaging characteristics showed multiplied irregular dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts in enlarged liver,with central dot sign on CT scan.One case presented enlarged gastroesophageal vein.The 8 cases undertook conservative treatment,with no surgery.Conclusions The symptoms of Caroli′s disease are highly variable.Caroli′s disease should be focused especially on children with abdominal pain and hepatomegaly.CT is important for diagnosis of Caroli′s disease at earlier stage.The disease can be conservatively treated,and(or) surgically operated.

Objective To investigate the effects of partial body weight supported treadmill training (BW- STT) on post-stroke depression (PSD) and on patients' quality of life.Methods Sixty patients with PSD were re- cruited and divided into a training group (n=30,male 17,female 13) and a control group (n=30,male 16,fe- male 14).All patients were treated with routine internal medication and rehabilitation.The patients of the training group also received BWSTT in addition to their routine treatment.All patients' neurological impairment was evaluated using the Modified Edinburgh-Scandinavian Stroke Scale (MESSS).The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) was used for evaluating the degree of depression.The Fugl-Meyer scale and the Barthel index were used to assess ambula- tion and balance,and facility in the activities of daily living.All patients were assessed before and after the treat- ment.Results After four weeks of treatment,depression in the training group had improved significantly more than in the control group.Conclusion BWSTT intervention is very important for patients with PSD:it can reduce the degree of depression and improve the quality of life.

Objeoctive:To revise and examine the validity and reliability of the Perception of Child Maltreatment Scale (PCMS) in college students.Method:A sample of 555 undergraduates coming from two universities in Harbin and one university in Shanghai was investigated with questionnaire,half of them (n =227) was assessed for exploratory factor analysis and another half of them (n =228) was assessed for confirmatory factor analysis.The criterion validity was tested with the Short Form of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF).Totally 57 students were retested for test-retest reliability with 2 week interval.Results:Totally 28 items were retained after exploratory factor analysis,classified into five factors,named psychological abuse,physical abuse,labor,neglect,sexual abuse.And the result of confirmatory factor analysis was that the structure of scale was stable and achieved goodness of fit (x2/df=1.63,CFI =0.912,TLI =0.901,RMSEA =0.048,SRMR =0.059).The scores of psychological abuse,physical abuse and neglect in PCMS were negatively correlated with the scores of psychological abuse,physical abuse and neglect in CTQ-SF respectively (r =0.12-0.15,Ps ＜0.05).Cronbach's α coefficient of total scale was 0.92,and the Cronbach's α coefficients of subscales were between 0.55 and 0.84.The test-retest reliability were 0.84 for total scale and 0.76-0.91 for five subscales.Conclusion:The validity and reliability of the revised questionnaire is satisfactory,which could be used in the measurement of college students' perception of child maltreatment.

Objective To explore the method of intervening measure applied at dynamic state during ultrasonic scaling treatments and may control the aerosols and spatters in dental department so that we may provide safe clinical environment for dental personnel and patients. Methods 40 patients received ultrasonic scaling treatments were divided into experiment and control group. The experimental group received measures by the ozone air disinfector at the beginning of ultrasonic scaling treatments (the ozone air disinfector worked 5 minutes) and the control group was not received the device treatment.. Air samples were collected at different appointed period. Results A Mann-Whitney test was conducted to determine significant difference between the ultrasonic scaling treatments with the ozone air disinfector and the ultrasonic scaling treatments without the device at different appointed time. The general bacterial population in the air were lower in experimental group than in control group (P < 0.01). Conclusions The ozone air disinfector applied at dynamic state during ultrasonic scaling treatments may control the quantities of colony-forming units of aerosols and spatters in dental clinic. After dynamic disinfection, the quantities of colony-forming units may conform to the National Disinfection Technology Criteria.
