OBJECTIVETo observe the HBV serum markers and HBV DNA expressions of the neonates born to the HBsAg-positive mothers.
METHODSBy detecting serum immunity markers of hepatitis B virus (5 items) and serum HBV DNA of 283 neonates (a pair of twins) born to 282 HBsAg-positive mothers.
RESULTS12 patterns emerge from the study of the hepatitis B serum markers of 283 neonates. Topping the list is the combination of HBeAg and anti-HBc positive accounting for 48.41% (137/283), followed by the combination of anti-HBe and anti-HBc positive accounting for 22.26% (62/283). The third highest combination is that of HBsAg, HBeAg and anti-HBc positive accounting for 12.37% (35/283). There are five combinations accounting for 16.61% (47/283), each with HBsAg-positive. No case is found of the five items all negative or only HBsAb positive. Five cases are detected of serum HBV DNA > or = 1 x 103 IU/ml accounting for 1.77%.
CONCLUSIONSNeonates born to HBsAg-positive mothers display complex patterns of serum hepatitis B markers, the dominant pattern being the combination of HBeAg and anti-HBc positive. Cases of serum HBV DNA > or = 1 x 10(3) IU/ml are rare.

This study was aimed to establish a stable animal model of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) to provide theoretical and experimental basis for understanding the development of LVH. The abdominal aorta of male Wistar rats (80-100 g) was constricted to a diameter of 0.55 mm between the branches of the celiac and anterior mesenteric arteries. Echocardiography using a linear phased array probe was performed as well as pathological examination and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) measurement at 3, 4 and 6 weeks after abdominal aortic constriction (AAC). The results showed that the acute mortality rate (within 24 h) of this modified rat model was 8%. Animals who underwent AAC demonstrated significantly increased interventricular septal (IVS), LV posterior wall (LVPWd), LV mass index (LVMI), cross-sectional area (CSA) of myocytes, and perivascular fibrosis; the ejection fraction (EF), fractional shortening (FS), and cardiac output (CO) were consistently lower at each time point after AAC. Notably, differences in these parameters between AAC group and sham group were significant by 3 weeks and reached peaks at 4th week. Following AAC, the plasma BNP was gradually elevated compared with the sham group at 3rd and 6th week. It was concluded that this modified AAC model can develop LVH, both stably and safely, by week four post-surgery; echocardiography is able to assess changes in chamber dimensions and systolic properties accurately in rats with LVH.

OBJECTIVETo study the characteristics of the TCM syndrome and the changes of ventricular structure and function in heart failure (HF) rats after- myocardial infarction (MI).
METHODSRats were randomly divided in to the model group and the sham-operative group. The HF rat with MI model was induced by ligation of the left coronary artery. Eight weeks after operation, appraisal on TCM syndrome revealed in the model was made from the aspects of general status, breathing frequency, heart rate, exhausting swimming time and electrocardiogram, and left ventricular structure and function were observed with echocardiography.
RESULTSEight weeks after operation, as compared with those in the sham group, in the model group, the heart rate and breathing frequency were accelerated, the exhausting swimming time shortened, the echocardiogram parameters such as interventricular septum end-diastole thickness (IVSTd), posterior wall end-diastole thickness (PWTd), posterior wall end-systolic thickness (PWTs), ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening (FS) of the left ventricular reduced (P < 0.01), while left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVDd) and end-systolic dimension (LVDs) obviously increased (P < 0.01). In 12 leads electrocardiogram, the leads of ST segment elevated and abnormal Q wave increased. Additionally, the ratio of whole heart weight/body weight increased (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe HF rats after MI manifests Xin-qi deficiency and blood stasis syndrome, and shows the pathological changes of left ventricular remodeling and function impairment.

OBJECTIVETo assess the clinical values of CT colonography (CTC) in the diagnosis of colonic polyps.
METHODSForty-two patients who were clinically suspicious of colonic polyps or underwent colonic polyps screening received both CTC and conventional colonoscopy. Sixteen or 64-slice spiral CT and professional imaging processing techniques were used for evaluation. Per-polyp and per-patient results were analyzed. Those by per-polyp were subsequently divided into > or = 10 mm group, 5-10 mm group, and < or = 5 mm group. Sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV), specificity, negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy were calculated using statistical method for diagnostic studies, with conventional colonoscopy as a gold standard.
RESULTSNinety and 61 polyps were found by CTC and conventional colonoscopy, respectively. Sensitivity and PPV were 80.3%/55.6% by per-polyp and 100%/92.9%, 93.8%/65.2%, and 68.8%/ 41.5% in the > or = 10 mm group, 5-10 mm group, and < or = 5 mm group, respectively. Sensitivity, PPV, specificity, NPV, and accuracy by per-patient were 97.1%, 89.5%, 42.9%, 75.0%, and 88.1%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONCTC can clearly reveal the morphology of colonic polyps and can be used as a routine monitoring method for the clinical diagnosis of polyps.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) on U937 cell growth and its mechanism.
METHODSCell cycle was detected by flow cytometry (FCM), expressions of cell cycle associated protein and the p27 related protein were detected by Western blot. The binding of P27 and Skp2 was detected by immunoprecipitation.
RESULTSFCM displayed that ATRA could inhibit the proliferation of U937 cells. At 72 h on 1 micromol/L ATRA treatment, 72% of the cells were arrested at G0/G1 phase. Western blot displayed that ATRA could decrease the expression of cyclin A, up-regulate the expression of p21 and p27, and down-regulate the expression of p27 related proteins Skp2. p27 could bind with Skp2 in U937 cells as detected by immunoprecipitation.
CONCLUSIONATRA may arrest the proliferation of U937 cells through the reduction of Skp2 expression, and finally the induction of the accumulation of p27.
