1.The Development of Website-based Food and Nutrition for Women.

This study has two section, one is design and development of website, the other is evaluation of website quality. The website was designed to have three web contents, Nutrition education for women's health, Food information for women, and Menus for women's health. In nutrition education for women's health, women were divided by healthy women, pregnant and nursing women, and patients. In Food information for women, I offer food information for the purpose of inducing women to have food intake for healthy lives. In Menus for women's health, 299 menus were selected by preference evaluation and menu evaluation. The website was developed through this study. The main menu consists of 3 web contents of nutrition education for women's health, food information for women, menus for women's health and this site also contain Q & A. In the quality valuation process by a group of experts, all respondents highly esteemed the quality of the website used in this study reward grading in higher than 3 points (in general).

2.Transformation of Recurred Lupus Nephritis from Class IV to Class V.

There are numerous studies about the transformation of renal pathology during lupus nephritis progression. A number of researchers suggest that patients with previous proliferative glomerulonephritis may not need to repeat renal biopsy in relation to treatment strategies. However, the pathology of renal biopsy could offer important information to clinicians about the progression of disease. Here, we report a rare case of the convertion of ISN/RPS classification from a proliferative lesion to a wholly non-proliferative lesion. A 40-year-old female was admitted complaining of generalized edema for 1 month. At the age of 33 she had been diagnosed as SLE with proliferative lupus nephritis. The renal remission was induced with corticosteroid pulse therapy and 12 cycles of intravenous cyclophosphamide treatment. The repeated renal biopsy revealed class V lupus nephritis compared with referential biopsy of class IV-G. A better prognosis is expected with lower activity and a lower chronicity index. Repeat renal biopsy may give useful information relating to the prognosis of nephritis.

5.Anticancer effects of Ulva compressa extracts on FaDu human hypopharangeal squamous carcinoma cells in vitro

Ulva compressa Linnaeus (UCL) is a green algae seaweed that performs photosynthesis and is used as a food material in some Asian regions including Korea. It is known to be the dominant species in copper ion-contaminated seas, and many studies on copper ion resistant mechanisms have been reported. UCL is known to have an excellent antioxidant effect, but limited information is available regarding its other physiological activities. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activity of 30% prethanol extracts of Ulva compressa Linnaeus (30% PeUCL) and the underlying mechanisms of its activity on human FaDu hypopharyngeal squamous carcinoma cells. The 30% PeUCL extracts suppressed FaDu cell viability without affecting normal cells (L929), as determined by MTT and viability assays. Furthermore, the 30% PeUCL extracts induced apoptosis, as determined by DAPI staining. The 30% PeUCL extracts inhibited colony formation effectively as well as wound-healing of FaDu cells, even at noncytotoxic concentrations. In addition, 30% PeUCL extracts induced apoptosis significantly through proteolytic cleavage of caspase-3, -7, and -9, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, and by downregulation of Bcl-2 and upregulation of Bax in FaDu cells, as determined by Western blot analysis. Collectively, these results suggest that the inhibitory effect of 30% PeUCL extracts on the growth of oral cancer cells, colony formation and wound-healing may be mediated by caspase- and mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathways in human FaDu hypopharyngeal squamous carcinoma cells. Therefore, 30% PeUCL extracts can be administered as a natural chemotherapeutic drug for the treatment of human oral cancers.

7.Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Antiphospholipid Syndrome and Lupus Nephritis as Initial Manifestation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with various manifestations, while its autoantibodies and immune reactions involve multiple organs. Neuropsychiatric involvement in SLE is known to be common, however, peripheral neuropathy is relatively rare. Guillain-Barre syndrome is clinically defined as an acute demyelinating peripheral neuropathy causing weakness and numbness in the legs and arms. We describe a case of Guillain-Barre syndrome with antiphospholipid syndrome and lupus nephritis. The patient was admitted with fever and diarrhea. He developed progressive weakness of the upper and lower extremities and dysarthria with characteristic nerve conduction patterns compatible with Guillain-Barre syndrome. He also had proteinuria and gangrene of the hand and toe with antiphospholipid antibody. He received intravenous immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis for progressive neuropathy, intravenous high dose steroid to control activity of SLE, and anticoagulation for antiphospholipid syndrome. Neuropsychiatric manifestation of SLE is related to lupus activity closely, so it is important to control lupus activity.

Inflammatory myopathy is characterized by symmetrical proximal muscle weakness, elevated muscle enzyme levels and favorable response to glucocorticoids therapy. Although periorbital edema is a common manifestation of inflammatory myopathy, generalized subcutaneous edema is very rare. We report here a case of a 47-year-old female patient with acute polymyositis/systemic lupus erythematosus overlap syndrome with generalized subcutaneous edema and interstitial lung disease. We aggressively treated the disease with high-dose glucocorticoids, intravenous immunoglobulin, and immunosuppressive agents.

9.An Experience of Cyberknife Treatment in Patients with Advanced Pancreaticobilliary Malignancy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: CyberKnife(TM) stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has been thought as a promising treatment modality for inoperable or recurred pancreaticobiliary malignancies. But, clinical course of CyberKnife(TM) treatment have not been established yet, so we report the experience of CyberKnife(TM) treatment in 19 patients with recurred or advanced pancreaticobilliary malignancies. METHODS: Between July 2008 and May 2009, 19 patients (gallbladder cancer 4, common bile duct cancer 5, and pancreatic cancer 10) with recurred (12) and advanced pancreaticobiliary cancer (7) underwent CyberKnife(TM) treatment in Soonchunhyang University Hospital. Tumor size was evaluated at 1, 3, 6, 8 and every 3 months after SBRT. RESULTS: The mean age was 60.2 years, and the mean size of target lesions was 28.1+/-1.30 mm. After CyberKnife(TM) treatment, the average size of target lesions was decreased; 2.53+/-4.18 mm from months 0-1 in 19 patients, 2.47+/-4.7 mm from months 1-3 in 15 patients, 0.08+/-5.11 mm from months 3-6 in 12 patients. However, the average size of target lesions was increased 3.67+/-8.98 mm from months 6-8 in 6 patients. There were 2 cases of massive duodenal ulcer bleeding after CyberKnife(TM) treatment, one of them expired due to ulcer bleeding. Also, other minor complications appeared such as 1 case of abdominal pain and 1 case of diarrhea. CONCLUSIONS: CyberKnife(TM) treatment seems to be effective in local control of pancreaticobiliary cancer, but we experienced serious complications. Further prospective studies will be needed for the proper evaluation of role of Cyberknife(TM) treatment in patients with advanced pancreaticobiliary malignancies.

10.The Relation between Postvoid Residual and Occurrence of Urinary Tract Infection after Stroke in Rehabilitation Unit.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation between postvoid residual (PVR) and the occurrence of urinary tract infection (UTI) in stroke patients. METHOD: One hundred and eighty-eight stroke patients who were admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation unit and who did not have UTI on admission (105 males, 83 females, mean age 67.1 years) were included in this study. The PVR was measured 3 times within 72 hours after admission. Mean PVR, demographic variables, K-MMSE (Korean Mini-Mental State Examination), initial K-MBI (Korean Modified Barthel Index), Foley catheter indwelling time and stroke type were defined and the relation to the occurrence of UTI was analyzed. RESULTS: UTI occurred in 74 patients (39.4%) during admission to the rehabilitation unit. There were significant differences between the UTI and non-UTI groups in K-MMSE, K-MBI, Foley catheter indwelling time (p<0.01). However, age, gender, stroke location and type were not associated. The occurrence of UTI was 4.87 times higher in the patients with a mean PVR over 100 ml than in those with a mean PVR <100 ml. The mean PVR was 106.5 ml in the UTI group, while it was 62.7 ml in the non-UTI group (p<0.01). PVR was not associated with age. CONCLUSION: The UTI rate is higher when the mean PVR is over 100 ml irrespective of gender and age. Close monitoring of PVR and appropriate intervention is needed to reduce the occurrence of UTI in stroke patients.
