1.Awareness of using chatbots and factors influencing usage intention among nursing students in South Korea: a descriptive study

Purpose:
Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a profound impact on humanity; in particular, chatbots have been designed for interactivity and applied to many aspects of daily life. Chatbots are also regarded as an innovative modality in nursing education. This study aimed to identify nursing students' awareness of using chatbots and factors influencing their usage intention.
Methods:
This study, which employed a descriptive design using a self-reported questionnaire, was conducted at three university nursing schools located in Seoul, South Korea. The participants were 289 junior and senior nursing students. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires, both online via a Naver Form and offline.
Results:
The total mean score of awareness of using chatbots was 3.49±0.61 points out of 5. The mean scores of the four dimensions of awareness of using chatbots were 3.37±0.60 for perceived value, 3.66±0.73 for perceived usefulness, 3.83±0.73 for perceived ease of use, and 3.36±0.87 for intention to use. Significant differences were observed in awareness of using chatbots according to satisfaction with nursing (p<.001), effectiveness of using various methods for nursing education (p<.001), and interest in chatbots (p<.001). The correlations among the four dimensions ranged from .52 to .80. In a hierarchical regression analysis, perceived value (β=.45) accounted for 60.2% of variance in intention to use.
Conclusion
The results suggest that chatbots have the potential to be used in nursing education. Further research is needed to clarify the effectiveness of using chatbots in nursing education.
2.Estimation and change of edentulism among the Korean population: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018

To estimate the prevalence of edentulism according to the socio-demographic variables of Korean adults between 2007 and 2018 and to analyze the trends.
METHODS:
This study was conducted using raw data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2007 to 2018. Edentulism was defined as the absence of upper and lower teeth or the retained root of the missing teeth. To obtain the prevalence of edentulism, complex sample frequency analysis and regression analysis were performed according to the socio-demographic variables to represent the national population. The Korean population structure in 2005 was exploited as a standard population to calculate age-standardized edentulism.
RESULTS:
The prevalence of edentulism in 2016-2018 was 9.7% in the Korean elderly, and the change of age-standardized edentulism steadily declined over time from 2007, 12.8%. In particular, it decreased by approximately 20% in the period between 2016 and 2018 compared to that in 2007 for those in their 80s. The trend of the prevalence according to gender decreased significantly in women. According to the level of education, the greatest decrease was seen in the group with the lowest education, although the prevalence itself was higher than that seen in those who were more educated.
CONCLUSIONS
The prevalence of edentulism among the older Korean population has decreased over time. However, the concern is on those with lower education and men as these groups are still at higher risk for edentulism.

4.Traumatic Atlanto-Occipital Dislocation Presenting With Dysphagia as the Chief Complaint: A Case Report.

We report a patient with traumatic atlanto-occipital dislocation who presented with dysphagia as the chief complaint. A 59-year-old man complained of swallowing difficulty for 2 months after trauma to the neck. On physical examination, there was atrophy of the right sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius muscles, and the tongue was deviated to the right. In a videofluoroscopic swallowing study, penetration and aspiration were not seen, food residue remained in the right vallecula and pyriform sinus, and there was decreased motion of the soft palate, pharynx and larynx. Electromyography confirmed a right spinal accessory nerve lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed atlanto-occipital dislocation. Dysphagia in atlanto-occipital dislocation is induced by medullary compression and lower cranial nerve injury. Therefore, in survivors who are diagnosed with atlanto-occipital dislocation, any neurological symptoms should be carefully evaluated.

5.Relationship between periodontal status and blood count and anemia in adults: Based on the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease fundamentally initiated by chronic bacterial infection. Just as the periodontal tissues mount an immune inflammatory response to bacteria and their products, systemic challenges owing to these inflammatory agents also induce a major vascular response. It is proposed that periodontitis also needs to be considered as a chronic disease that may decrease erythrocyte count and consequently lower hemoglobin concentration (Hb%). Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate the correlation between anemia and blood cell count according to periodontal state. METHODS: Data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES) were used to analyze the prevalence of anemia and blood cell counts according to the periodontal status. Complex logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship of anemia with periodontal status. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and logistic regression using SPSS, and 95% confidence intervals were computed. RESULTS: A significant difference was observed for gingivitis (odds ratio [OR], 1.436 [95% confidence interval [CI], 1.072-1.924]) but not for periodontitis (OR, 1.353 (95% CI, 0.947-1.934). CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides further evidence that gingivitis has systemic effects and may cause anemia. However, periodontitis was not significantly associated with anemia. Further, there was no significant difference in periodontal status after adjustment for age, gender, and other factors.

6.Association of Hemoglobin A1c with Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors and Metabolic Syndrome in Nondiabetic Adults.

BACKGROUND: Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a useful index of mean blood glucose concentrations over the preceding 2 to 3 months. Elevated HbA1c levels (> 7%) are associated with a higher incidence of microvascular and macrovascular complications in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, the relationship between HbA1c and cardiovascualr disease risk in nondiabetic adults has been unclear. The aim of this study is to estimate the association of HbA1c with cardiovascular disease risk factors and metabolic syndrome in nondiabetic adults. METHODS: The subjects of this study included 533 adults (180 males and 353 females) aged 20~70 years (mean age: 46.9 +/- 10.12 years) without previously diagnosed diabetes who lived in Kangyang country. We examined baseline HbA1c levels and cardiovascular risk factors. Metabolic syndrome was defined based on International Diabetes Federation guidelines. RESULTS: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome significantly increased as HbA1c increased. HbA1c revealed a significant correlation with age (r = 0.258, P < 0.001), BMI (r = 0.152, P < 0.001), waist circumference (r = 0.252, P < 0.001), fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.319, P < 0.001), systolic (r = 0.100, P = 0.021), diastolic (r = 0.115, P = 0.008) blood pressure, total cholesterol (r = 0.232, P < 0.001), triglyceride (r = 0.156, P < 0.001), LDL cholesterol (r = 0.216, P < 0.001), and HDL cholesterol (r = -0.167, P < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that HbA1c had a association with age, fasting plasma glucose, and dyslipidemia. The receiver operating characterstics (ROC) curve analysis determined HbA1c of 5.35% to yield optimal sensitivity and specificity corresponding to the presence of metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: The HbA1c level is correlated with cardiovascular risk factors and prevalence of metabolic syndrome in nondiabetic adults.

7.Effects of Indoor Rowing Exercise on the Body Composition and the Scoliosis of Visually Impaired People: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of rowing exercise on body composition, laboratory data, fitness and scoliosis in visually impaired people. The majority of visually impaired people do not participate in active sports due to efficiency and safety issues. Rowing is a safe whole-body exercise with aerobic and anaerobic components. METHODS: Twenty subjects were recruited from among those admitted to a facility for visually impaired people (16 men and 4 women). Laboratory data, body composition, physical fitness, Cobb's angle, and fall index were checked before and after 6 weeks (5 days a week) of indoor rowing using Concept2 Model E. RESULTS: After the training, fat mass and total body fat percent decreased significantly. In the fitness test, back strength and trunk flexion score increased significantly. Laboratory data showed significant increases in serum protein and albumin and decreases in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. There were 9 subjects with scoliosis and after the training Cobb's angle decreased by 1.11degrees+/-1.55degrees, though this was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Visually impaired people frequently have abnormal body composition, low physical fitness, and scoliosis. A rowing exercise program can be helpful, with a positive effect on body composition and physical fitness; however, with respect to scoliosis, we need an earlier intervention program in visually impaired people.

8.Changes in bisphenol A concentrations in urine according to sealant filling in children.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to investigate the changes in bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations in urine from before to after sealant filling and the relationship between BPA and the number of teeth with sealed surfaces. METHODS: Thirty-one children aged 6 and 7 years from three elementary schools in Daegu city who did not have any sealant and resin filling were selected as subjects. Urine samples were collected before and after sealant filling until 24 hours, with informed consent from their caregivers. The BPA concentration in all the collected urine samples was analyzed at Seegene Medical. Statistical analysis was performed using the Friedman test, Scheirer-Ray-Hope test, and the repeated-measures generalized linear mixed model of SPSS version 22.0. RESULTS: The BPA concentrations increased from 3.49-μg/g creatinine before to 4.91-μg/g creatinine 2-3 hours later and to 4.15-μg/g creatinine after 24 hours. The more teeth with sealed surfaces, the higher the BPA concentration in children, but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The BPA concentrations were highest at 2–3 hours after sealant filling and decreased at 24 hours. Exposure to the sealant appears to have a meaningful correlation with the concentration of BPA in the urine of children.

10.Mobile transposon-like element, clone MTi7: Finding its role(s) by RNA interference.

OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted to evaluate the mobile transposon-like element, clone MTi7 (MTi7) expression in the mouse ovary and to determine its role(s) in the mouse oocytes by RNA interference (RNAi). METHODS: MTi7 mRNA expression was localized by in situ hybridization in day5 and adult ovaries. Double stranded RNA (dsRNA) was prepared for c-mos, a gene with known function as control, and the MTi7. Each dsRNA was microinjected into the germinal vesicle (GV) stage oocytes then oocyte maturation and intracellular changes were evaluated. RESULTS: In situ hybridization analysis revealed that MTi7 mRNA localized to the oocyte cytoplasm from primordial to preovulatory follicles. After dsRNA injection, we found 43-54% GV arrest of microinjected GV oocytes with 68%-90% decrease in targeted c-mos or MTi7 mRNA. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of the oocyte-specific expression of the MTi7 mRNA. From results of RNAi for MTi7, we concluded that the MTi7 is involved in the germinal vesicle breakdown in GV oocytes, and MTi7 may be implicated with c-mos for its function. We report here that RNAi provides an outstanding approach to study the function of a gene with unknown functions.
