Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing 2013;19(1):36-47
PURPOSE: This study was to explore subjectivity on childbearing in high school students. METHODS: A Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each type was used. Forty-three high school students classified 40 selected Q-statements into 9 points standard. The obtained data were analyzed by using the pc-QUANL program. RESULTS: High school students' subjectivity on childbearing were analyzed into two types: Type 1 turned out to be 'FOLS (family oriented life style)' and Type 2 'CINK (couple important no kid)'. CONCLUSION: In order to resolve such problems as low birth rate and the advanced age of the population, effective youth and adult programs, policy and institution are required. The current demographic, economic and other factors such as personal values and policies may lower birth rate. In particular, youths' need for children and birth rate tend to be lower. There are positive and negative patterns in high school students' subjectivity on childbearing. Thus, national and social efforts are needed to change negative factors into positive ones. In order to maintain positive subjectivity on childbearing in high school students, it is necessary to apply family-centered educational programs and to implement birth-friendly and realistic programs for promoting child birth.

Archives of Craniofacial Surgery 2017;18(3):155-161
BACKGROUND: Because of the relatively similar size of organs to human and the physiological and structural similarities, the use of porcine as xenograft donors is progressing very actively. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of porcine ear cartilage and evaluated its suitability as graft material in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. METHODS: The auricular cartilage was harvested from two pigs, and subjected to histological examination by immunohistochemical staining. To determine the collagen content, samples were treated with collagenase and weight changes were measured. After sterilization by irradiation, the samples were grafted into rats and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin and Masson Trichrome to observe inflammation and xenograft rejection. RESULTS: In IHC staining, extracellular matrices were mainly stained with type II collagen (20.69%), keratin sulfate (10.20%), chondroitin sulfate (2.62%), and hyaluronic acid (0.84%). After collagenase treatment, the weight decreased by 68.3%, indicating that about 70% of the porcine ear cartilage was composed of collagen. Upon xenograft of the sterilized cartilages in rats, inflammatory cells were observed for up to 2 months. However, they gradually decreased, and inflammation and reject-response were rarely observed at 5 months. CONCLUSION: The porcine ear cartilage was covered with perichondrium and cellular constituents were found to be composed of chondrocytes and chondroblasts. In addition, the extracellular matrices were mainly composed of collagen. Upon xenograft of irradiated cartilage into rats, there was no specific inflammatory reaction around the transplanted cartilage. These findings suggest that porcine ear cartilage could be a useful alternative implant material for human cosmetic surgery.

Body surface potential map, an electric potential distribution on the body torso surface, enables us to infer the electrical activities of the heart. Therefore, observing electric potential projected to the torso surface can be highly useful for diagnosing heart diseases such as coronary occlusion. The BSPM for the heart of a patient show a higher level of sensitivity than 12-lead ECG. Relevant research has been mostly based on clinical statistics obtained from patients, and, therefore, a simulation for a variety of pathological phenomena of the heart is required. In this study, by using computer simulation, a body surface potential map was implemented according to various occlusion locations (distal, mid, proximal occlusion) in the left anterior descending coronary artery. Electrophysiological characteristics of the body surface during the ST segment period were observed and analyzed based on an ST isointegral map. We developed an integrated system that takes into account the cellular to organ levels, and performed simulation regarding the electrophysiological phenomena of the heart that occur during the first 5 minutes (stage 1) and 10 minutes (stage 2) after commencement of coronary occlusion. Subsequently, we calculated the bipolar angle and amplitude of the ST isointegral map, and observed the correlation between the relevant characteristics and the location of coronary occlusion. In the result, in the ventricle model during the stage 1, a wider area of ischemia led to counterclockwise rotation of the bipolar angle; and, during the stage 2, the amplitude increased when the ischemia area exceeded a certain size.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm labor and delivery is probably the largest problem in modern perinatology. The early diagnosis of preterm labor is crucial for prevention of preterm birth. To predict the onset of preterm labor, we examined the diagnostic performance of serial cervical assessment by transvaginal sonography. METHODS: In this prospective study, we performed transvaginal sonography at approximately 30 and 34 weeks of gestation in women with singleton pregnancies. Cervical parameters evaluated included endocervical length, the presence of funneling, funnel length and funnel width. We then assessed the relation between cervical parameters and the risk of spontaneous preterm labor. RESULTS: We examined 258 women at approximately 30 weeks of gestation and 247 of these women again at approximately 34 weeks. Spontaneous preterm labor occurred in 9 of women examined at 30 weeks(Group 1) and in 13 at 34 weeks(Group 2). The endocervical length was normally distributed at 30 and 34 weeks(mean +/-SD, 38.26+/-6.82mm and 35.63+/-7.35mm, respectively). The endocervical length decreased significantly from 30weeks to 34 weeks(p=0.0001). Both groups showed significantly shorter endocervical length(p <0.05) and groupl more presence of funneling than group of term pregnancy(p<0.05). Receiver-operator characteristic curve and multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that endocervical length <-30mm at 30 weeks and <-25mm at 34 showed highest diagnostic index in predicting the onset of preterm labor(p=0.0001). Conclusions: Serial transvaginal ultrasound assessment of endocervical length during early third trimester is a useful predictor of preterm labor and delivery in low-risk patients.

Korean Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2003;46(8):1493-1499
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of an open bladder neck in women with stress urinary incontinence and to assess its clinical and urodynamic significance. METHODS: To evaluate the presence of an open bladder neck, a total of 356 women with stress incontinence were evaluated by static cystourethrography (CUG). An open bladder neck is a finding defined as the appearance of contrast medium in the proximal urethra at resting state (like a 'beak') without overt leakage. We classified the patients into two groups according to the presence of an open bladder neck on static CUG and compared 13 clinical parameters between the two groups. RESULTS: The open bladder neck finding was observed in 192 (53.9%) patients. Open bladder neck was more common in higher symptom grade, older age, more delivery history, greater bladder neck descent, and estrogen depleted patients. There was a significantly higher rate of intrinsic sphincteric deficiency (ISD) in the open bladder neck-positive group (37.5%) than the open bladder neck-negative group (23.2%) (p=0.01). The average abdominal leak point pressure (ALPP) of women with open bladder neck (82.8 cmH2O) was lower than that of women without open bladder neck (96.4 cmH2O) (p=0.003). CONCLUSION: The open bladder neck on static CUG has clinical and urodynamic significance. Although it is not diagnostic of ISD, the finding may reflect functional deficiencies of intrinsic sphincter. One should consider this parameter when evaluating patients, especially in the equivocal zone of ALPP 61-90 cmH2O.

Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2004;43(6):712-718
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the personality factors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients to investigate the contribution of personality to the development of PTSD. METHODS : The PTSD group and Non-PTSD group with no other sympton met DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria for major psychiatric disorders were selected among 129 survivors of Daegu subway fire accident. Of 129 survivors of the accident, 95 survivors who had faithfully resonded to the psychiatric evaluation were assessed with Catell's 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Of 95 survivors, 52 survivors were diagnosed to have PTSD. The results were compared among PTSD group, non-PTSD group and normal group. RESULTS : In 16PF measurement, the scores of Anxiety and Tender-mindedness were significantly higher in PTSD group than normal and Non-PTSD groups. And the scores of Liberalism was significantly higher in PTSD group than normal group. The scores of Warmth, Stableness, Dominance, Surgency were significantly lower in PTSD and Non-PTSD than normal group. The scores of Guilty-proness and Anxiety were significantly higher in PTSD and Non-PTSD groups than normal group. In STAI measurement, PTSD group showed higher scores than Non-PTSD and normal group. CONCLUSION : These results suggested that patients with PTSD group were disposed to tension, anxiety, inpatience, fatigue, dependence, concern and compassion. It indicates that development of PTSD is associated with personality factors such as Anxiety and Tender-mindedness. Further prospective studies are necessary to clarify how personality factors were involved in the development of PTSD.

Korean Journal of Ophthalmology 2013;27(4):282-287
PURPOSE: Recently, conjunctivochalasis repair surgery using electrocauterization has been gaining popularity. However, patients with electrocauterized conjunctivoplasty tend to complain of more postoperative pain than patients undergoing simple excision with suturing. Therefore, we investigated the effects of electrocauterization on inflammation of the conjunctiva using an experimental animal model and compared these with the effects of simple excision with suturing. METHODS: Ten New Zealand white rabbits underwent cauterization in the right eyes and excision and suturing in the left eyes. For each eye, we excised or electrocauterized the inferior bulbar conjunctiva, 1 mm in width and 6 mm in length, 2 mm from the limbus. A fine-needle electrode was inserted subconjunctivally, and electrocauterization was performed. In the contralateral eye, the corresponding area was excised and re-approximated with 10-0 nylon sutures. Sutures were removed after 14 days. Tissue samples were obtained at 21 days post-procedure, and inflammatory cells were counted in five randomly selected fields (x200) on hematoxylin-eosin stained slides. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-1beta concentrations in tears were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS: All cauterized eyes demonstrated smooth surface healing without scarring after 5 days, whereas sutured eyes presented with mild edema with some scarring until the suture was removed. The number of inflammatory cells was significantly greater in sutured eyes compared with cauterized eyes (p = 0.035, Mann-Whitney U-test) at 21 days post-procedure. Tear TNF-alpha and IL-1beta concentrations at 21 days were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Electrocauterization for conjunctivoplasty seems to be advantageous in terms of inflammation compared with simple suturing and excision.

Korean Journal of Urology 2002;43(3):219-223
Purpose: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used for the clinical staging of bladder cancer. However, a previous transurethral resection (TUR) often results in an overestimation of a proper muscle and perivesical fat invasion in the CT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a TUR on CT staging in patients with bladder cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 67 patients who underwent a radical cystectomy for primary bladder cancer were included in this study. CT was performed before a TUR in 38 patients (group 1) and after a TUR in 29 (group 2). In each patient, CT evaluated the presence or absence of a proper muscle and perivesical fat invasion and the findings were then compared with the histopathologic findings following the radical cystectomy. RESULTS: CT had an overall staging accuracy of 79.1% for a proper muscle invasion and 67.2% for a perivesical fat invasion. For a proper muscle invasion, there was a significant difference between both groups in the CT specificity (76.9% vs. 30.0%, p=0.024) while no difference in the sensitivity (92.0% vs. 89.5%) was noted. For a perivesical fat invasion, there was also a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the CT specificity (75.0% vs. 35.7%, p=0.022) while there was no difference in the sensitivity (72.2% vs. 80.0%). CONCLUSIONS: A TUR before a CT may cause a false positive result in the clinical staging of bladder cancer using CT. Therefore, to minimize the confounding effect of a TUR on CT staging, it is strongly recommended that a CT be performed before a TUR in the case of a highly suspicious invasive bladder cancer.
