Hygrocybe conica (HC), a wild mushroom commonly consumed by the indigenous people (Orang Asti) in Peninsular Malaysia, was assessed for its antioxidant content. Methods: The HC mushroom was extracted using distilled water and the crude extract partitioned using different solvents and open column chromatography to evaluate its potential antioxidant properties. The mushroom extract was partitioned using liquid-liquid extraction into the hexane (F1), chloroform (F2), butanol (F3) and formic acid (F4) fractions. Based on solvent polarity, the water extract of the mushroom was fractionated into non-polar (FI), semi-polar (FII), and polar fractions (FIII) using open column chromatography. Antioxidant capacities were determined using DPPH, ABTS, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays while Folin-Ciocalteu reagent assay was used to determine total phenolic content (TPC). Results: The HC extract had the highest TPC and DPPH scavenging capacity compared to its extract fractions. TE values (ABTS assay) of F2 and F4 were not significantly higher than the HC extract. Among the extract fractions of different polarities, FIII had the highest antioxidant capacities (DPPH and FRAP) compared to FI and FII while FRAP values of these fractions were not significantly lower than the FRAP value of HC extract. The HC extract had significantly lower antioxidant capacity than antioxidant standards (ascorbic acid and BHA). Tannic acid as the main bioactive component in HC mushroom was detected using HPLC method. The presence of phenolics in HC extract was also confirmed using TLC. Conclusion: Due to the presence of potent phenolic components, the mycelia of HC could be consumed for potential antioxidative benefits.

5.In addition to the group of antineoplastic fungi in Vietnam, a rare species of mushroom Maitake Grifola frondosa (Dicks. Fr.) S.F.Gray
Pharmaceutical Journal 1999;274(2):9-11
Grifola frondosa (Dicks. Fr.) S.F.Gray. was for the first time isolated and fruifully cultivated on mixed substrate in §µ L¹t, Vietnam for preservation of fungal gene resources and for suppling of nutritional foods and pharmaceutical material

6.Fill up to the group of antineoplastic mushrooms in Vietnam a very rare species: Agaricus blazei Murrill
Pharmaceutical Journal 1998;272(12):12-14
The squamule button mushroom Agaricus blazei Murrill was fruifully cultivated in Da Lat, VietNam, under similar procedure at large scales with white button mushroom A. bisporus, giving lower biological efficiency (biomass of fresh fruibodies harvested per unit of dry composts used). The prefectful development of fruibodies was described and a minireview on their medicine - food value was discussed

7.Field mushroom of Cao Bang province - A special taxon of the branch Lentinula Pegler
Pharmaceutical Journal 2000;269(12):6-9
A minireview on current status in systematics of the genus Lentinula Pegler was presented addition of distinct collection of Cao Bang stain of shiitake from Vietnam, that were described as a new geographical race with morphologically specific characters intermediating between L. edodes and L. lateritia. Furthermore, non fertile hybrids (basidiosporeless lines) obtained by nonospore-crossing between Cao Bang strain and strains of l. edodes from Japan support so distinct differentiations, that Cao Bang shiitake would be suggested even at the rank of biologically distinct species

8.Isolation, screening of antifungal, antibacterial properties of endo-parasitic vegetable species of mushroom isolated from some medicinal plant gardens in North Vietnam
Pharmaceutical Journal 2005;0(8):20-23
Study of 45 plant samples including different parts (leave, herb, root) collected from different areas of Ha Noi, Yen Tu - Quang Ninh and Me Linh medicinal plant garden showed that: Endophyte fungal were found in all plant samples, much in Garcinia oblongifolia Champ ex Benth cover 7/89, Sterculia lanceolata Cavan 5/89 and Desmos.sp. 4/89. From 89 isolated endophytes fungals, 32 had antibiotic properties 36%, 20 had antifungal and antibacterial activities 22.5%, 26 had antibacterial activities 29.2%, 27 had antifungal activities 30.33%. N2 isolated from Sterculia lanceolata Cavan had strong antifungal activities. 9 species with high activities were selected for the next study on form classification and chemical isolation following biological activities orientation. This may be a promising direction for finding new substances with high biological activities

9.The protecting effect on liver of Vietnam’s Linh chi mushroom (ganoderma lucidum) on rat suffering from expreimental liver function failure
Journal of Medical Research 2003;24(4):29-34
On white rats, high doses of paracetanol (2g/kg of body mass) and carbonetetrachloride (CCl4 –1.4ml/kg body mass administrated orally) increased dramatically serum transaminase AST and ALT, reduced liver capacity of cholesterol and total protein synthetizations. Granulous degeneration, lipid degeneration and necrosis focus were observed pathohistologically. Linh chi mushroom fluid extracts with the dose of 4g/kg of body mass reversed these biochemical indicators and restored nearly normally the damaged tissues. Similar results were obtained with the oral dose of 25mg Silimarin brand name preparation/kg body mass.
