PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the construct equivalence of the five general factors (subjective health, eating habits, physical activities, sedentary lifestyle, and sleeping behaviors) and to compare the latent means between male and female middle school students in Incheon, Korea. METHODS: The 2008 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey data was used for analysis. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test whether the scale has configural, metric, and scalar invariance across gender. RESULTS: Configural invariance, metric invariance, and factor invariance were satisfied for latent means analysis (LMA) between genders. Male and female students were significantly different in LMA of all factors. Male students reported better subjective health, consumed more fast food and carbonated drinks, participated in more physical activities, showed less sedentary behavior, and enjoyed better quality of sleep than female students. CONCLUSION: Health providers should consider gender differences when they develop and deliver health promotion programs aimed at adolescents.

PURPOSE: This study was a descriptive research to investigate the impact for middle aged women of health perception, self-efficacy, family support on Yangsaeng, a traditional Oriental way of promoting health. METHOD: Data were collected through questionnaires from 277 middle aged women. Collected data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18. Analysis included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference in Yangsaeng according to average monthly household income. There was a significant positive correlation between Yangsaeng and self-efficacy, family support, and health perception. Health perception, family support, self-efficacy, and monthly income were found to be significant predictors (36%) of Yangsaeng. CONCLUSION: To promote Yangsaeng in middle aged women, nurses should focus on factors identified in this study when developing nursing interventions for health promotion.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was the development and validation of a scale to measure the self-care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) in Korea. METHOD: Self-care scale was developed based on the self-care activities patients had to carry out in order to manage their COPD. The original scale contained 34 items rated along a five-point Likert scale and was reviewed by 18 professional nurses and 10 Korean patients with COPD for content validity. Subsequently, patients with COPD were asked to complete this 23-item scale and further tests were done with the 125 useable responses. RESULT: Factor analysis identified eight factors- "maintaining a clean air way", "taking medication", "support from family", "preventing infection", "managing symptoms", "breathing exercising", and "taking in nutrition". The internal consistency of the total scale was Cronbach's alpha=0.7226. These eight factors explained 60.8% of total variance. There was correlation among Korean Self-Care Scale score, administration level, and knowledge level but there was no correlation to patients' satisfaction with medical services. CONCLUSION: The 23 item questionnaire positively identified 8 areas defined important for COPD patients. Further studies are required to see how these can be integrated into patient education.

PURPOSE: To investigate the usefulness of a pharmacokinetic model based on dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MR imaging for the detection and localization of prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients that had undergone radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MR imaging (slice thickness, 4 mm; time resolution of each set, 5 seconds), were enrolled in the study. From the pharmacokinetic model, the time of arrival, and the parameters Ah, Kep, and Kel were extracted and were compared for cancerous tissue and non-cancerous tissue in the central gland and peripheral zone. The diagnostic performance of each parameter for differentiating cancerous tissue from non-cancerous tissue was evaluated using receiver-operating-characteristics analysis. RESULTS: The Kep and Kel values were significantly greater in cancerous tissue (0.13 sec(-1) +/- 0.14 and 1.59 x 10(-3) sec(-1) +/- 1.35 x 10(-3)) than in non-cancerous tissue from the central gland (0.03 sec(-1) +/- 0.02 and 0.26 x 10(-3) sec(-1) +/- 1.24 x 10(-3)) and peripheral zone (0.04 sec(-1) +/- 0.07 and 0.58 x 10(-3) sec(-1) +/- 1.98 x10(-3)) (p < 0.05). The area under the ROC curve for differentiating cancerous from non-cancerous tissue was 0.850 (95% CI, 0.778-0.876) for Kep and 0.814 (95% CI, 0.737-0.876) for Kel. CONCLUSION: Kep and Kel are useful perfusion parameters for the differentiation of prostate cancerous tissue from non-cancerous tissue.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding different carbohydrate sources and garcinia cambogia extract (HCA) on body weight and lipid metabolism. Fifty 10-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats weighting 635 +/- 6 g were randomly divided into 5 groups and fed different experimental diets for 4 weeks. The carbohydrate (CHO) sources of each group were cornstarch (control group, 100% of CHO), fructose (F group and FH group, 25% of CHO) and sucrose (S group and SH group, 25% of CHO). FH group and SH group were fed diets containing 1% (W/W) of HCA. Food intake, body weight gain, and calorie efficiency were not significantly different among the groups. Perirenal fat pad weight of FH group was significantly lower than F group, but epididymal fat pad weight was not different among the groups. Fasting glucose level were not significant among the groups. Plasma lipid profile of FH or SH group was slightly lower than F or S group, respectively. The degree of difference of plasma lipid level was greater between F and FH group than those of between S and SH group. In liver, total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol level were slightly higher in F group than S group, and tended to be lower in FH group than F group, but tended to be higher in SH group than S group. Liver citrate lyase activity were not significant among the groups. These results suggest that HCA is potential material for reduction of body weight and improvement of plasma lipid profiles. But, there was no difference between fructose intake with HCA and sucrose intake with HCA in reduction of body weight and lipid metabolism.

Objective: The effectiveness of music therapy programs for the elderly with dementia has been verified through several studies, but there is a limitation in that most of them are compared with a single group, no treatment group or waiting group. In this study, to overcome this problem, the two groups that performed similar interventions were selected and compared retrospectively. Methods: For 37 people who participated in the treatment programs for the elderly with dementia at Dongdaemun Center for De-mentia and its branch center, we retrospectively analyzed the changes in Korean version of Geriatric Depression Scale and GeriatricQuality of Life Scale-Dementia scores measured before and after treatment. Results: Prior to treatment, there is no significant difference between the groups in the demographic variables and the depression and quality of life scores. The difference between pre- and post-scores was not significant in the group at the branch center without a music therapy, but depression was significantly reduced and quality of life had improved in the group at Dongdaemun center with the music therapy program. Conclusion It was confirmed that participation in the structured music therapy program had a positive effect on the improve-ment of depression and quality of life in the elderly with dementia compared to other similar interventions.

Neonatal hemochromatosis is a very rare disorder with an unclear etiology with an extremely poor outcome. We report a case of female newborn who presented with direct hyperbilirubinemia without any evidence of congenital infection, immune related hemolysis or exogenous iron uptake. Diagnostic studies revealed highly elevated ferritin level. T2 weighted image of abdominal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed decreased signal intensity of entire left lobe and a part of right lobe of liver with normal spleen. Liver biopsy showed a large amount of hemosiderin in the hepatocytes and Kupffer cells. All the biochemical and excretory liver functions normalized with conservative managements.

The purpose of this study was to dcvclop nd test the validity of standardized Korean nome clature based on Nursing Intervention Classi ications (MC), developed by McCloskey and Bul chek at the University of Iowa, The four phases of the study were 1. Two professors and 15 graduate stude ts, who were taking a nursing intervention cours, translated the 433 nursing interventions of IC into Korean 2. 12 nurses with various clinical bac rounds reviewed the nomenclature, taking into nsider ation the definition and activities for each Korean nursing intervention. The Delphi method was used to determine the best appropriate nomenclature for each intervention ~. 20 academic and clinical experts in nursing were given a questionnaire to rate the validity of each Korean nomenclature using a 5 point Likert scale ranging from very inappropriate to very appropriate 4. five members of the Korean Nurses Association Research Committee reviewed the survey results and determined the most appropriate Korean nomenclature for each nursing intei veiition of NIC system. Most nomenclature had a score of more than 4.0, but seven nursing interventions had a score lower than 4.0: Critical Path Development (2.71), Calming Technique ~3.4l), Grief Work Facilitation (3.44), Order Transcription (3.44), Self Modification Assistance (3.44), and Teaching Psycho-motor Skills (3.47). These research results will be included in the nursing vocabulary dictionary to be published by Korean Nurses Association.

We report two cases of supratentorial gangliocytomas mimicking an extra-axial tumor. MR imaging indicated that the tumors were extra-axial, and meningiomas were thus initially diagnosed. Relative to gray matter, the tumors were hypointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. On contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images, homogeneous enhancement was observed, while CT scanning revealed calcification in one of the two cases.
