OBJECTIVETo promote the diagnostic accuracy of salivary Warthin's tumor by summarizing the ultrasonographic features of salivary Warthin's tumor.
METHODSSixty-nine lesions (58 patients with salivary Warthin's tumor) were retrospectively studied by ultrasonography and confirmed by histopathology.
RESULTSThe ultrasonographic manifestations of salivary Warthin's tumor demonstrated in three patterns.Type I: Solid mass(34 lesions, 49.3%), the mass was solid, grid-shaped echo inside. The mass was pathologically composed of such various tissues as epithelial cells, lymphatic organization, fibrous tissue which were compactly and evenly arranged, and little mucous formed the cyst cavity in which there projected epithelial papilla. Type II: Cystic-solid mixed mass(30 lesions, 43.5%), there was no flake-like echo, cystic-solid boundary was clear. Histopathological study revealed glandular epithelium made up irregular catheter and cyst cavity with yellowish mucous, glue-frozen-like stuff or brown colloidal substances. Type III: Cystic mass (5 lesions, 7.2%), the mass manifested separated cystic echo crumbs. The histopathological study showed salivary Warthin's tumor with infarctions and infections. The coincidence of ultrasound and histopathology diagnose was 79.7%.
CONCLUSIONThe ultrasonographic features of salivary Warthin's tumor are mainly based on the organization of histopathological study. The grasp of various ultrasonographic imagings and pathological changes is beneficial for increasing the accuracy rate of diagnosis higher.

Warthin's tumor (Papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum) is a slowly growing benign tumor. It is usually found in the parotid gland but sometimes in extraparotid locations such as periparotid lymph nodes and jugular lymph nodes. We here report the case of a 65-year-old male patient with multiple neck masses. The computed tomographic scan showed multiple masses in the left parotid gland, at the left mid-neck and right upper neck. We enucleated the intraparotid mass and excised multiple neck mass. The histopathologic examination revealed Warthin's tumor, which is multifocal and is found in multisites.

Warthin's tumor also known as cystadenolymphoma or adenolymphoma of the parotid gland is a unique, well defined benign neoplasm consisting of both lymphoid(mesodermal) and epithelial(ectodermal) elements. The lesion was first described by Hildebrand in 1895, then Albrecht and Arzt made it as a morphologic entity in 1910, and in 1929 Warthin reported two new cases, described their histopathology and coined the descriptive term papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum. Warthin's tumor comprise approximately 6% to 15% of all parotid gland tumor, is the second most common benign lesion of the parotid gland. Warthin's tumor has a unique architecture combines lymphoid and epithelial tissue, a duality that raises question about its embryogenesis and histogenesis. Its clinical behavior also presents a challenge because Warthin's tumor has been reported to be bilateral, multicentric, synchronous, metachronous, and extraparotid. Therefore the authors herein present 3 cases of Warthin's tumor treated recently, one of them is bilateral lesion and the others are unilateral multicentric lesions.

Warthin's tumor is the second most common benign tumor of the parotid gland. Malignancy arising from Warthin's tumor is extremely rare, and only 29 cases have been reported. Diagnosis can be made prior to the surgery, but in many cases, the disease is detected through postoperative pathology report or by recurrence of the mass lesion. We report a case of polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma arising from Warthin's tumor diagnosed by the excision of a parotid mass and treated by an additional surgery of superficial parotidectomy. The postoperative pathology report revealed no residual cancer cells and the patient is free of disease for 8 months since the operation.

Warthin's tumor is a common neoplasm of the major salivary glands. Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is rare. It may result from the involvement of intraparotid lymph nodes or the infection of parenchyma, either primary or secondary to nodal disease. Clinically, tuberculosis of the parotid may not be distinguishable from a neoplasm. This report presents a patient with a parotid mass that was thought to be a malignancy but, after surgery, was diagnosed to be Warthin's tumor associated with tuberculosis.

7.Bilateral Warthin tumor of the parotid gland: A case report.
Korean Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2008;38(1):57-62
The Warthin tumor is a benign neoplasm that occurs mostly in the parotid gland. The tumor frequently occurs in the tail of the parotid gland. A 75-year-old man was referred to Wonkwang dental hospital with a chief complaint of swelling on the right submandibular area. Numerous salivary stones were observed in the right submandibular gland on computed tomography(CT). And the two tumorous lesions were incidentally found in the parotid gland bilaterally. The tumorous lesions showed homogeneous enhancement on the CT and intermediate signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images. This tumorous lesions also showed contrast enhancement on fat suppressed T1 weighted MR images. We report common CT and MR features of this case of Warthin tumor in the parotid gland with literature review.

Initially described in 1929, Warthin's tumor is a benign neoplasm predominantly found in the parotid gland of the salivary glands. Warthin's tumor is synonymous for cystadenoma lymphomatosum, adenolymphoma, and cystadenolymphoma. This tumor usually causes minimal pain, but the patient may complain of tinnitus, pain in the ear, or deafness. The tumor is treated with surgical excision, which is easily performed due to the superficial location of the tumor. In our case, a 69-year-old man visited our clinic primarily complaining of swelling in the left parotid gland area. Computed tomography revealed well-defined margins of the tumor in the superficial lobe of the left parotid gland and heterogeneous contrast enhancement. We performed superficial parotidectomy, with the pathological examination confirming Warthin's tumor. We report a typical case of Warthin's tumor and a literature review.

10.Lymphadenoma Arising in the Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

Yonsei Medical Journal 2002;43(4):536-538
We report a case of lymphadenoma arising in the parotid gland. A 53-year-old female patient presented with a mass in the parotid gland. Grossly, it was a well-demarcated solid mass measuring 3 cm in diameter. Microscopic examination revealed many cysts or duct-like structures in the background of the prominent lymphoid stroma, confirming a diagnosis of lymphadenoma. This particular case was thought to have arisen from an intraparotid lymph node. Lymphadenoma is a rare benign neoplasm of the salivary gland with partial resemblance to other salivary gland tumors, such as Warthin's tumor, cystadenoma, sebaceous lymphadenoma or mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Therefore proper recognition of this rare entity is warranted to avoid confusion in the diagnosis.
