Since initial identification of astrocyte elevated gene -1 ( AEG-1 ) as a HIV-1-inducible novel oncogene in 2002 ,it has emerged as an important oncogene providing a valuable prognostic marker in pa-tients with various cancers. The present review discusses AEG -1 structure, function and localization.Further-more,we summarize the potential role of AEG -1 in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).This re-view can help us better understand the molecular mechanism in hepatocarcinogenesis .

Objective To compare the effects of fundus-first laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy in complicated cholecystolithiasis cases. Methods The effects of fundus-first laparoscopic cholecystectomy (n = 21) and laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy (a = 18) in the 39 cases of complicated chole-cystolithiasis from our hospital within 2 years were analyzed retrospectively. Results The operation time in subtotal laparoscopic cholecystectomy group was shorter than in fundus-first laparoscopic cholecystectomy group (88.89±18.11) min vs. (109.52±21.79) min, P < 0.05). Less blood lose (82.78±44.96) ml and fluid replacement (847.22±169.32)ml during the operation were observed in the former group than those in the later group (116.67±53.23) ml and (964.29±147.60) ml, respectively, P < 0.05). However, the patients' postoperative recovery time and the duration of postoperative hospital staying were similar in the two groups(5.56±1.20) days vs. (5.29±1.38) days, P > 0.05). Conclusions Proper use of subtotal laparoscopic cholecystectomy in complicated cholecystolithiasis cases can simplify the operation and obligate the operation time, which will increase the safety of the operation with the outcome similar to fundus-first laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Objective To examine the epidemiology of kidney stone in Pudong New Area ofShanghai and analyze its risk factors. Methods 12 565 residents with the age above 16 years weresurveyed. All subjects needed to answer a questionnaire concerning their sex, age, geographic loca tions, occupation, education status and family history of renal calculi, etc. Ultrasound examinationwas used to diagnose the kidney stone. Results The average prevalence of kidney stone was 3.15%(396/12565),4. 05%(247/6096)in the men and 2.30%(149/6469) in the women, respectively (P<0. 05). The prevalence increased significantly with age of men, whereas the prevalence was highest forwomen aged 50-59. The prevalence between city and rural was not significantly different before age60 (2.58% vs 2. 62%,P>0. 05),whereas the prevalence were significantly different after age 60(6.28% vs 3.36%,P<0.05). The prevalence of subjects with a family history of renal calculi washigher than that without family history (32.02% vs 2.06%,P<0. 01). The prevalence in manage ment staff and vehicle drivers were the highest. Conclusions The prevalence of kidney stone in Pud ong New Area of Shanghai was lower than that in south of China. The relative risk increased in sub jects of aged men, women aged 50 59,with family history of renal calculi, management staff and ve hicle drivers. An understanding of the epidemiology particularly the interactions among different fac tors, may help lead to approach that reduce the risk of stone formation.

Objective To study changes of aspartate(ASP) and glutamaic acid(GLU) in cerebral cortex of neonatal Sprague-Dawely(SD) rats after hypoxia-ischemia and nitric oxide synthase(NOS) immunoactive expression in cerebral neurons were examined to explore mailuoning′s protective effect on hypoxia-ischemia brain damage(HIBD).Methods The HIBD model was established as follows. The right common carotids of the neonatal SD rats 7 days were temporaily ligatured for 1 hour. Then the neonatal SD rats were exposed to 8% oxygen and 92% nitrogen gas mixture for 2 hours. The ASP and GLU were determined in right cerebral cortex using chromatograph, compared with sham-operated group and mailuoning administrated. Ultrastructure changes of neurons in the right cerebral cortex of neonatal SD rats were observed after sham-operated,hypoxia-ischemia and mailuoning administrated using electronmicroscope. Results The level of excitatory amino acid was promoted in right cerebral cortex after hypoxia-ischemia.The volume of excitatory amino acid was reduced sharply mailuoning administrated. Ultrastructure of neurons in the cerebral cortex showed serious injure after hypoxia-ischemia and ultrastructure of neurons in the cerebral cortex appeared slight damage. Conclusion Mailuoning may possess protective effects to the neurons after hypoxia-ischemia through supplying blood to neurons reducing release of excitatory amino acid.

OBJECTIVETo summarize the complications and the early clinical effect of less invasive stabilization system and the femoral condylar support plates in the treatment of AO type C distal femoral fractures.
METHODSFrom September 2007 to February 2012, 46 patients with AO type C distal femoral fractures were retrospectively studied. Of all patients 25 were treated with less invasive stabilization system including 14 males and 11 females with a mean age of (56.3±4.2) years old; according to AO classification, there were 14 cases of C1, 8 cases of C2 and 3 cases of C3 with a mean hospital stay of (15.6±1.7) days. While 21 cases were treated with femoral condylar support plates fixation including 12 males and 9 females with a mean age of (53.8±5.1) years old;there were 13 cases of C1, 6 cases of C2 and 2 cases of C3 with a mean hospital stay of (17.8±2.2) days. Comparative analysis was performed from the operation related index, postoperative complications and Evanich score of the knee joint function between the two groups at follow-up.
RESULTSAll 46 patients were followed up from 13 to 38 months with a mean time of 19.6 months after surgery. Complications included 1 case with infection,3 cases with internal fixation failure, 1 case with nonunion and 1 case with activity limitation of the affected knee. The differences in the incision length, blood loss, fracture healing time were significant between two groups (P<0.05), while there was no significant difference in the duration of operations, hospital stays and the incidence of postoperative complications between two groups (P>0.05). The statistical significance was also found in the Evanich score at last follow-up between two groups (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONPatients with less invasive stabilization system fixation had the characteristics of less trauma, shorter fracture healing time and better functional recovery. Less invasive stabilization system had became one of the ideal internal fixations in the treatment of AO type C distal femoral fractures.

Objective To explore the approach and early effects of endovascular stent-graft deployment in the treatment of portal stenosis of cancerous thrombus. Methods Six cases with portal vein stenosis of cancerous thrombus, which caused by primary hepatic carcinoma(5 cases)and eholangiocarcinoma(1 case)and the severity of stenosis showed on contrast enhanced CT were more than 75% or occluded, were performed percutaneous transhepatie or transsplenic portography.FLUENCY~(TM) endovascular stent-graft(10 mm diameter)was placed at the position of stenosis after gastroesophageal varices embolization.Portal pressure was measured pre-and post-deployment.Results Stents were successfully placed in all patients. The average portal pressure decreased from 50.7 cm H_2O(1 cm H_2O = 0.098 kPa)to 41.3 cm H_2O after endovascular stent-graft deployment. The restenosis were found in 2 cases after one month.Haematemesis and refractory aseites appeared in one case respectively, the other 4 cases showed no significant symptoms above caused by portal hypertension. Conclusion It is safe and feasible for endovaseular stent-graft deployment in the treatment of portal stenosis of cancerous thrombus.Selecting the suitable indications, the symptoms of portal hypertension can be controlled effectively.
