Objective: To observe the therapeutic efficacy of tuina plus cupping on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Methods: A total of 100 CFS patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group according to the random number table in the sequence of visit, with 50 patients in each group. The treatment group was treated with tuina plus cupping therapy, 3 times a week. The control group was given oral tablets of wild American ginseng lozenges. After 3 months of treatment, the score of fatigue questionnaire scale (FS-14) was observed and the efficacy was evaluated. Results: The total effective rate was 92.0% in the treatment group, versus 76.0% in the control group and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the FS-14 scores of the two groups decreased, and the intra-group differences were statistically significant (both P<0.05). The change of FS-14 score after treatment in the treatment group was more significant than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Tuina plus cupping is effective for CFS, and can improve fatigue symptoms significantly.

Objective To assess the effects of zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP), an inhibitor of the heme oxygenase (HO), on the colonic interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) of diabetic rats with colonic slow transit. Methods Diabetes mellitus (DM) model was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) in Sprague-Dawley rats. Twenty four successfully established DM rats were selected, and 16 healthy rats were served as controls. Six weeks later, gastrointestional (GI) dysfunction was observed by charcoal propulsion experiment in 8 DM rats and 8 controls. The rest rats in DM group were divided into 2 groups: DM rats intraperitoneal injected with PBS (n=8) or with 10 μmol/kg of ZnPP (n = 8) every other day for 3 weeks. The rats in control group (n = 8) were intraperitoneally injected with PBS. The levels of HO and c-kit (the special receptor of ICC) expression were detected by Western blotting. The distribution of ICC was observed by immunohistochemistry and the area of c-kit positive cells was counted. Results The GI propulsion rate in DM rats interfered with PBS was significantly declined compared to that in the controls (63.0%± 1.2% vs 71.8%±2.0%, P<0.05). But it was improved in DM rats interfered with ZnPP (72.5± 2.6%, P<0.05), which showed no significant differentee with that in control group (P>0.05). The expression of HO-1 in close and distant colon of DM rats interfered with ZnPP was decreased (P< 0.05). The expression of HO-2 in close colon and the area of c-kit positive cells of DM rats interfered with PBS was reduced compared with that in controls (P<0.05), but both were improved in DM rats interfered with ZnPP (P<0. 05). Conclusion Administration of ZnPP might be able to protect ICC by its blockage of HO-1 in DM rats with gastrointestinal dysfunction.

Objective To explore the effects of electroacupuncture at Shenting (DU24) and Baihui (DU20) on learning and memory ability in the cerebral ischemia-reperfusion rats and its possible mechanism. Methods 45 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham group (n=15), ischemia group (n=15) and electroacupuncture group (n=15). The latter 2 groups were modeled as focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, and the electroacupuncture group received electroacupuncture at Shenting (DU24) and Baihui (DU20) for 7 days. They were tested with Morris Water Maze, observed with Nissl's staining. The protein expression of RhoA was detected with Western blotting. Results The learning and memory ability improved in the electroacupuncture group (P<0.05), the injury of the neurons reduced (P<0.05) and the expression of RhoA in hippocampus decreased compared with the ischemia group (P<0.05). Conclusion Electroacupuncture could ameliorate the learning and memory ability in ischemia- reperfusion rats, which may relate with the inhibition of the expression of RhoA in hippocampus.

A reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and single-strand conformation polymorphisms (SSCP) assay were applied to rapidly detect the molecular variability in CP and SP genes among seven isolates of Rice stripe virus in China. The PCR results showed that the CP gene of JD isolate and SP gene of PJ isolate could not be amplified. SSCP analysis showed that there were completely different electrophoretic pattern of CP gene among six isolates. To SP gene, SSCP results also discovered polymorphisms. There were five patterns among these isolates, and the pattern of YL and BS isolates were same.
