Objective To investigate the effect of local injection of Botulinum toxin type A(BTXA) on spasticity and function of the affected upper limb in stroke patients. Methods A total of 32 stroke patients were re- cruited and randomly divided into two groups:a BTXA group and a control group. All the patients had spasticity of upper limb muscles, which scored grade 2 to 3 with the Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS) ,and decreased elbow joint range of motion. The 16 patients in the BTXA group received BTXA injection in the biceps brachii muscles and flexor muscles of forearm on 10~15 points, while those in the control group did not.All the patients in both groups were treated with rehabilitation training techniques. The MAS,Fugl-Meyer upper limb function assessment and Barthel In- dex were employed to evaluate the changes of muscle tone, upper limb function and activity of living (ADL)perform- ance of the patients before injection and at 1st,2nd,6th 12th weeks after injection. Results The therapeutic effect between the BTXA group anti control group was significantly different in terms of biceps muscle tone, the scores of Fugl-Meyer upper limb function assessment and Barthel Index.Compared with preinjection, muscle tone was de- creased significantly and ADL performance was improved after injection in BTXA group. The effects of BTXA lasted more than 12 weeks. Conclusion Intramuscular muhipoint injection of BTXA was useful in reducing muscle spas- ticity, and was helpful for increasing motor ability of the affected upper limb and ADL performance of the stroke pa- tients.

OBJECTIVETo observe the impacts on skeletal fluorosis pain, joint motor dysfunction and urine fluoride excretion in the treatment with fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3.
METHODSThe randomized controlled trial was adopted. Ninety-five patients were randomized into a fire needle group (31 cases), an electroacupuncture group (33 cases) and a calcium carbonate D3 group (31 cases). In the fire needle group and the electroacupuncture group, Ashi points, Dazhui (GV 14), Geshu (BL 17), Quchi (LI 11), Hegu (LI 4), Xuehai (SP 10) points were selected and stimulated with fire needle and electroacupuncture separately, three times a week. In the calcium carbonate D3 group, calcium carbonate D3 tablets was prescribed for oral administration, 600 mg each time, twice a day. The duration of treatment was 2 months in the electroacupuncture group and calcium carbonate D3 group and 1 month in the fire needle group. VAS score, the range of motion (ROM) and urine fluoride value were compared before and after treatment in the patients of the three groups.
RESULTSAfter treatment, VAS value and ROM were improved significantly in the patients of the three groups (all P < 0.05), the difference was not significant in comparison of the three groups (all P > 0.05). After treatment, the urine fluoride value was increased significantly in the fire needle group [(7.89 +/- 3.61) mg/L vs (9.81 +/- 4.17) mg/L, P < 0.01] and was increased in the electroacupuncture group [(7.53 +/- 3.46) mg/L vs (8.97 +/- 4.21) mg/L, P < 0.05]. The difference was not significant in comparison before and after treatment in the calcium carbonate D3 group (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3 all have the clinical value in the prevention and treatment of skeletal fluorosis and the difference in the therapeutic effect has not been discovered among them yet at present. But it has been found that the fire needle therapy and electroacupuncture display the active significance in the promotion of urine fluoride excretion.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects and mechanisms of Wuling mycelia on seizure development and learning ability induced by pentylenetetrazole-kindling epilepsy in rats.
METHODSSD rats were randomly divided into four groups: pentylenetetrazole-kindling model group (model group), low dose Wuling mycelia (0.3 g*kg(-1)) group (LD-WM group), high dose Wuling mycelia (0.6 g*kg(-1)) group (HD-WM group) and control group. The rats were intraperitoneal injected with a subconvulsive dose (35 mg*kg(-1)) of pentylenetetrazole (saline in control group) every 48 h for 12 times. Wuling mycelia was intragastrically applied 30 min before pentylenetetrazole injection. An 8-arm radial maze ( 4 arms baited) was used to measure the learning ability. Histamine was measured by chemical fluorometric enzyme immunoassay.
RESULTSCompared with the model group, the kindling stage of LD-WM group degraded significantly after 7th injection, the latency to the onset of myoclonic jerks (LTMJ) and the latency to the onset of generalized seizures (LTGS) prolonged after the 6th and 7th injection, respectively (P<0.05). The kindling stage of HD-WM group also degraded markedly after the 6th to 8th injection, and the LTMJ and the LTGS extended after the 8th to 9th and 6th injection, respectively (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the frequency of working memory error (WME) and reference memory error (RME) of the model group in the 8-arm radial maze increased through 3-d training (P<0.05). The memory tests showed that the impairment induced by pentylenetetrazole was partially reversed by Wuling mycelia. Compared with the control group, brain histamine contents (hippocampus, cortex, thalamus and hypothalamus) were significantly lower in model group (P<0.05). But compared with the model group, hippocampal histamine contents in LD-WM group and hippocampal, thalamic and hypothalamic histamine contents in HD-WM group were elevated (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONWuling mycelia can delay the kindling and ameliorate the ability of learning in rats with pentylenetetrazole-induced epilepsy and the enhancement of neuronal histamine activity may be one of possible mechanisms.

AIMBLT1 and BLT2 were both recently cloned and identified as two subtypes of leukotrine B4 (LTB4) receptors. With the usage of U-75302 and LY255283, the specific antagonists of BLT1 and BLT2 respectively, the involvement of BLT1 and BLT2 in the inflammatory and immunological responses was in vitro explored.
METHODS(1) To investigate inhibition of U-75302 and LY255283 on the proliferation of rat synovial cells, 3H-TdR incorporation into the cells was quantified. (2) Flow cytometric assay for interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and interleukine 4 (IL-4) profiles in CD4+ T lymphocytes from rat spleen was carried out to determine the ratio of Th1/Th2.
RESULTS(1) For inhibition on rat synovial cells proliferation, U-75302 exerted its effect only at a high concentration of 10 micromol/L and LY255283 at the concentrations of 10 micromol/L-10 micromol/L. (2) Both U-75302 and LY255283 could elevate the percentage of Th2, but could not influence that of Th1.
CONCLUSIONBLT1 and BLT2 were involved in the synovial cells proliferation change the ratio of Th1/Th2. Their meaning served as targets for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases should be emphasized.
