The Indian ethnic group remains underrepresented despite the continued advancement in the field of speech and language
therapy (SLT) in Malaysia. This study aims to investigate the perception of Malaysian Indian Pre-university students towards
a career in the health sciences and specifically for the SLT profession. This was a cross-sectional study that employed
convinience sampling method to recruit participants. A total of 110 Indian pre-university students from urban cities of
Kuala Lumpur and Johor were recruited. The findings showed majority of the respondents (>90%) placed importance
on a career that provided “high salary,” “job stability,” and “career’s social standing in the community.” Almost all
respondents recognize the medical, pharmacy and nursing profesion compared to only <3% who were familiar with the
occupational therapy, audiology and SLT profession. Respondents perceived the SLT profession as “suited for females,”
“interesting” and provided “opportunities to meet people.” None of the respondents perceived SLT as a profession that
“suited for males,” “high salary” and “a scientic course.” Only 5% of respondents would consider a career in SLT.
Findings from this study can be used to increase awareness and to change inaccurate perceptions regarding health
science profession especially SLT amongst the Indian ethnicity.

Journal of Medical Research 2007;53(5):124-129
Background: Sodium bicarbonate is highly alkaline and may be helpful in relieving symptoms of gout. Sodium bicarbonate helps to adjust your body's pH level, slightly creating an alkaline-forming state that lessens the likelihood of gout attacks. We can prepare sodium bicarbonate in several ways to treat gout symptoms. Objective: To examine the efficacy of sodium bicarbonate for treatment of gout. Subjects and method: A study was conducted in 54 patients with gout at Department of Rheumatology of Bach Mai hospital, from September 2006 to March 2007. Patients were divided into two groups, group 1 included 29 patients treated with intravenous sodium bicarbonate and group 2 included 25 patients treated with oral sodium bicarbonate. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Results: No significant changes showed between serum uric acid level, 24-hour urine uric acid level at before and after treatment in 2 groups. Gout patients with renal failure had increased level of 24-hour urine uric acid after treatment (p < 0.05). There were significantly increased level of urine volume, urine pH and decreased level of urine specific gravity after treatment. The effect of sodium bicarbonate was not different between intravenous usage and oral usage. Conclusion: Sodium bicarbonate could change urine environment, limit crystallization of urine uric acid of gout patients.

The combinations of gel activated charcoal and sorbitol in rational proportion (product name: Antipois- Bachmai) were given for 91 patients with ingestion-induced poisoning as protocol of Bachmai Poison Control Center. 76 cases (83.5%) were admitted before 6 hours and 85 cases (93.4%) before 12 hours. 66 patients (72.5%) were given 1 dose, 93.4% were given less than 3 doses, and in 2 patients (2.2%), 6 doses have been used. Antipois-Bachmai was used conveniently. Deposit was not observed in gastric sonde, so this drug prevented from obstruction due to charcoal.
