National Journal of Andrology 2006;12(4):318-322
OBJECTIVETo observe the protective effects of vitamin E on the testicular injury by cyclophosphamide in mice, and the correlative mechanism.
METHODSFifty sexually mature male mice were randomly divided into five groups: the cyclophosphamide group (the CP group), the low-dose vitamin E group (the low-dose group), the middle-dose vitamin E group (the middle-dose group), the high-dose vitamin E group (the high-dose group), the matched control group (the control group). The first four groups were given cyclophosphamide by gavage at a dose of 5 mg/(kg x d). The low-dose group, the middle-dose group and the high-dose group were given vitamin E by subcutaneous injection at doses of 30 mg/(kg x d), 50 mg/(kg x d) , 70 mg/(kg x d) after 4 h of cyclophosphamide treatment. The control group was gavaged with equivalent normal saline. The treatment period for all groups was 28 days. The level of plasma FSH, LH, T and the activity of testicular SOD, GSHPx, CAT and the level of testicular MDA were detected. The histological structure and the ultrastructure of the testis were examined by light microscope and electron microscope.
RESULTSAs compared with the CP group, the plasma FSH, LH, T level and the SOD, GSHPx, CAT activity in the middle-dose group and the high-dose group were higher (P< 0.05, P< 0.01), MDA level significantly lower(P<0.01). The histological structure and the ultrastructure of the testis were in the normal range.
CONCLUSIONVitamin E has protective effects on the testicular injury by cyclophosphamide in mice. The possible mechanism of vitamin E may be its scavenging free radical and antioxidant effects, as well as it may have some stimulatory effects on gonadotrophin releasing of pituitary anterior lobe.

OBJECTIVEObstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) may cause serious morbidities, such as systemic hypertension, diabetes, and cor pulmonale. However, currently no many reports on study of OSAHS in children are available. This study aimed to explore the effects of OSAHS on children's multiple systems.
METHODA total of 89 cases of children who came to the Sleep Treatment Center in the authors' hospital from March 2009 to December 2010 with snoring were tested with overnight polysomnography (PSG). They were classified into mild OSAHS group (n = 59, mean age of 5.71, SD = 2.46) and moderate to severe group (n = 30, mean age of 5.30, SD = 2.73) based on the PSG results, and 100 healthy children were selected as the control group (n = 100, mean age of 6 years, SD = 2.98). Data including height, weight, body mass index and blood pressure, peripheral blood routine, blood lipids, glucose and insulin, electrocardiogram and echocardiography were collected. Patients' adenoid face and abnormal occlusion were also recorded. Comparisons of the data were made among those groups.
RESULTMild OSAHS and moderate to severe group had significantly higher prevalence of adenoid face (23.7%, 26.7%), and abnormal occlusion (74.6%, 60.0%) than that in control group (0, 40%) (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in terms of BMI between the OSAHS group and the control group, but the weight (kg) and height (cm) in the mild OSAHS group (23.3 ± 10.1, 114.9 ± 16.2) and moderate to severe group (21.9 ± 8.4, 110.8 ± 13.3) were lower than those of the control group (31.8 ± 10.1, 136.1 ± 15.1) (all P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the level of HDL-C (mmol/L)and insulin (mU/L) in moderate and severe group decreased [(1.20 ± 0.30) vs. (1.40 ± 0.27), 2.79 (0.84 - 16.16) vs. 4.92 (0.76 - 16.80), P < 0.05], while the LDL-C (mmol/L) increased [(2.61 ± 0.75) vs. (2.32 ± 0.62), P < 0.05]. The red blood cell counts (× 10(12)/L) and the blood platelet counts (× 10(9)/L) in the mild OSAHS (4.93 ± 0.37, 292.92 ± 75.64) and moderate and severe OSAHS group (5.23 ± 0.22, 292.50 ± 63.05) were significantly higher in contrast to the control group (4.70 ± 0.31, 255.60 ± 69.12) (all P < 0.05), systolic blood pressure (mmHg) in mild group (98.54 ± 10.44) and moderate to severe group (99.13 ± 19.13) was significantly higher compared to control group (87.88 ± 11.37), and the heart rate (beats/min) in moderate to severe group (94.43 ± 10.64) was higher than those in control group (87.12 ± 16.20) (all P < 0.05). The mild OSAHS and moderate and severe OSAHS group had decreased right ventricular internal diameter [(14.24 ± 1.64) mm, (13.17 ± 2.07) mm ], increased main pulmonary artery diameter [(17.05 ± 3.33) mm, (16.33 ± 3.14) mm] and the thickness of right ventricular wall [(3.43 ± 0.26) mm, (3.57 ± 0.20) mm] compared to control group [ (16.10 ± 2.96) mm, (14.11 ± 2.52) mm, (3.32 ± 0.25) mm] (all P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONOSAHS in children may be associated with craniofacial malformations, and may contribute to slow growth and development, elevated blood viscosity and blood pressure, metabolic abnormalities, and change cardiac structure.

Journal of Regional Anatomy and Operative Surgery 2019;28(1):55-59
Objective To investigate the risk factors of aggravated cerebral edema after meningioma surgery.MethodsRespectively analyze the clinical data of 187 patients received neurosurgery operation in our hospital from January 1, 2016 to February 5, 2018 and their postoperative aggravated cerebral edema, the related risk factors for brain edema after meningioma surgery was summarized. Results The incidence of aggravated cerebral edema in patients without preoperative edema (26.23%) was higher than that in patients with preoperative edema (13.8%), the difference was not statistically significant, probably due to the small number of cases or other related factors.Multivariate analysis of all related factors found that preoperative edema was the influencing factor for the increase of brain edema after meningioma surgery (P=0.005).It was found by single factor analysis that tumor site was a risk factor for the aggravation of cerebral edema after meningioma surgery.Multivariate analysis and multiple rate comparisons revealed that the sagittal sinus falx area was an independent risk factor for the aggravation of cerebral edema after meningioma surgery.ConclusionThe presence of peritumoral edema before surgery may be a protective factor for the postoperative brain edema. The incidence of postoperative cerebral edema was significantly higher in meningiomas located near the sagittal sinus falx than that of other sites. Therefore, meningiomas located near the sagittal sinus falx should be attached great importance.During the operation, the venous drainage should be protected, the perioperative management should be strengthened, and hormone and subsequent dehydration should be given timely to improve the prognosis of patients.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the change of lymphocyte subsets before and after chemotherapy in colorectal carcinoma patients.
METHODSTwenty-one peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets from 62 colorectal carcinoma patients before and after FOLFOX4(including oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin) , FOLFRI(including irinotecan, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin) , or XELOX(including oxaliplatin and capecitabine) regimen chemotherapy were examined by flow cytometry. The differences of these lymphocyte subsets were analyzed.
RESULTSAfter chemotherapy, the percentages of CD3(+), CD3(+)CD8(+), CD29(+), CD4(+)CD29(+), and CD4(+)CD25(+) cells in peripheral blood of colorectal carcinoma patients increased significantly, while the percentages of CD19(+) and human leukocyte antigen(locus) DR(HLA-DR) (+) cells decreased significantly(P<0.05) .The results of subgroup analysis showed that the patients' CD3(+)CD8(+) and CD4(+)CD25(+) cells increased significantly, CD19(+) and HLA-DR(+) cells decreased significantly after FOLFOX4 regimen chemotherapy(P<0.05) ;CD3(+)CD8(+) cells increased significantly and CD19(+) cells decreased significantly after XELOX regimen chemotherapy(P<0.05) ;while after FOLFRI regimen chemotherapy, there were no significant changes in all 21 lymphocyte subsets(P>0.05) . CD3(+), CD3(+)CD8(+), memory T lymphoctye(45RO(+)) , and CD4(+)CD45RO(+) cells increased significantly(P<0.05) in patients who received no more than 4 cycles of chemotherapy. However, in patients that received 5 to 8 cycles and more than 9 cycles chemotherapy, we only found significant decrease of HLADR(+) cells and significant increase of CD29(+) cells, respectively(P<0.05) .
CONCLUSIONSThe humoral immunity is attenuated after chemotherapy in colorectal carcinoma patients. FOLFOX4 may suppress the cellular immunity.Chemotherapy that is less than 4 cycles will strengthens the cellular immunity by modulating body immunity arrangement;however, along with the increase of chemotherapy cycles, the cellular immunity gradually declines in these patients.
