1.The Process of Overcoming the Professional Burnout of Clinical Nurses.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration 2013;19(3):427-436
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the process of overcoming professional burnout among clinical nurses. METHODS: Data were collected from 12 clinical nurses through in-depth interviews about their actual experiences. The main question was "How do you describe your experience of the process of overcoming professional burnout?" Qualitative data from the field notes and transcribed notes were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology developed by Strauss & Corbin. RESULTS: The core category of experience of the process of professional burnout among clinical nurses was identified as "Keeping a balance by awakening-relaxing-coexisting". The participants used six interactional strategies such as 'Confronting problems', 'Exposing problems', 'Laying the mind's burdens down', 'Taking a breather', 'Seeing from a different perspective', 'Accepting realities'. The results of overcoming process of professional burnout were 'Coexisting' and 'Revitalizing'. CONCLUSION: The results of this study provide useful information for designing supportive programs and policies to solve professional burnout in clinical nurses.

Acta Medica Philippina 2022;56(3):49-55
Objectives: Public health dentists in the Philippines are being made to treat more patients and do other tasks despite being underpaid. Despite this, there is a dearth of information on burnout and its association with Filipino public-school dentists. Thus, this study aimed to assess the burnout levels and their association with the amount of work and sleep quality.
Methods: There were 10 out of 14 dentists from the Caraga Region who responded and answered a self-directed and self-reported online questionnaire composed of 52 questions that gauged sociodemographic data, sources of burnout, level of burnout, lower back pain, and sleep quality.
Results: Based on the results of the study, dentists with more than 40,000 patients (rs=0.81, p=0.005), in charge of more than one municipality (rs=0.67, p=0.035) and more than one school (rs=0.67, p=0.035), and with poor sleep (rs=1, p=0.005) experience more burnout.
Conclusion: The level of burnout is high in Filipino public-school dentists. In this study, burnout was associated with dentists who have poor sleep, having to serve more than 40,000 patients, more than one municipality, and more than one school. The legal bases for oral health and other pertinent memorandum orders from concerned government organizations should be revisited.

4.Developing a professional identity in nursing through reflection
Philippine Journal of Nursing 2021;91(2):69-73
Professional identity is the nurse's collection of beliefs about what it “means to be” and to “act like” a nurse. This represents his/her “philosophy of nursing” and it has a direct influence on how actual “roles and responsibilities” are followed. In other words, professional identity is the “foundational reference” in the nurse's cognitive process to which decisions are being made. Moreover, these are the values and beliefs held by the nurse as guiding principles in thinking, behaving, acting, communicating, and interacting with patients, the patient's family, and other members of the healthcare team. As a practical science, nursing education has introduced the importance of reflective learning in the clinical setting when providing care to patients and in building nurse-patient relationships. This means that there is a developing awareness of assisting, encouraging, and teaching both students and professional nurses to become thoughtful individuals, capable of critical thinking and analogy to come up with innovative ideas. Reflection in this mode of instruction is considered as a tool for the analysis of nursing practice nurturing both the understanding of professional nursing and the building of important thoughtful approaches essential for providing nursing care in multifaceted and dynamic working conditions. As a result, reflection, as an instructional method, has been included in many nursing curricula. However, the concept of reflection within the context of developing a professional identity has scarcely been defined to adequately identify research and educational indicators. This concept analysis aims to describe attributes, antecedents, and consequences of reflection in the development of professional identity in nursing and to provide clear evidence for nursing educators/faculty that support the systematic development of professional nurses as they advance in practice from the undergraduate to the graduate programs.

5.Medical professionalism in Korea: a sociological view.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2011;54(11):1164-1171
A profession is characterized by advanced theoretical and systematic knowledge, which can provide that profession with autonomy and authority. This paper examines the factors affecting the realization of complete professional autonomy such as the market and capital, patients, and the state. The primary factor of weak autonomy is due to the undifferentiated interests of professionalism from the influence of capital. The second factor is the ineffective system of self-regulation over physician behavior. The third factor is the underdevelopment of medical values, which could override the current conflicts between physicians and the state.

Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2003;0(5):35-40
Background: The phenomenon of smoking in health workers is rather common. In Vietnam, data on smoking in different demographics is quite rich, but research on the medical staff is sparse.\r\n', u'Objectives: To discover the smoking behavior and to identify predictors of smoking status among health workers in Hue Central hospital. \r\n', u'Subjects and methods: The questionnaire of a global survey on tobacco use among health professionals was adapted for data collection on a sample number of 749. \r\n', u'Results: Research participation rates reached 83.2% (65.6% female compared with 34.4% male). Overall smoking rate is just 14.7%, but much more prevalent among male subject (over 20-fold vs female), among physicians than nurses, among over-30-year old cohorts than among under 30 year old cohorts. One main predictor of smoking is the belief of health professionals on their role as non-smoking exemplary.\r\n', u'Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of promoting the belief of health professionals about the no-smoking atmosphere as a good model for patients.\r\n', u'\r\n', u'

Hae Jung LEE ; Patricia F BRENNAN
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 1999;29(5):1123-1133
The concept of empathy was examined in the professional caregiving relationship and its application was extended to the context of informal caregiving. Using the Lazarus and Folkman model. the influence of empathy on the caregiver's experience in the caregiving relationship was illustrated. The effects of the caregiver's empathy on his/her own caregiving outcomes were investigated by examining the relationship between empathy and burnout experience and life satisfaction. Empathy increased emotional exhaustion while increased personal accomplishment and personalization. indicating conflicting relationship between empathy and burnout. This conflict relationship between empathy and burnout can be explained by suggesting the distinct roles of two dimensions of empathy: emotional and caregiving context and to examine the definite roles of two dimensions of empathy were suggested.
