Objective To explore the relationship of dynamic changes between the iodine nutritional condition and growth of children born before and after the implementation of universal iodine.Methods By means of sampling investigation,urinary iodine and goiter,height,weight,intelligence quotient(IQ)were comprehensively evahated in children aged 7～14 years old born before and after the implementation of iodine in 10 counties and 2 cities of Qiannan.Results The median of urinary iodine of children Was 91.88μg/L in 1984,133.33μg/L in 1994,316.00μg/L in 2006;goiter rate was 21.40%(122/570)in 1984,12.86%(107/832)in 1994,5.28%(45/851)in 2006;the average IQ was 89.18±4.10 in 1994,94.26±0.94 in 2006;children in each age group in 2006 has a higher height and a heavier weight compared with those in 1984.Conclusion The physical development and intelligence of children in the areas of iodine deficiency have improved along with the correction of iodine deficiency.

High expression of cellular asparagine synthetase (AS) is a causative factor for the resistance of leukemic cell to L-asparaginase therapy. This study was aimed to find single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) in the promotor region of asparagine synthetase (AS) gene and to determine if these SNPs have influence on the transcriptional activity of AS promotor. The DNA sequences of AS promoter (pAS) from 82 leukemic children and 45 controls were determined to screen for SNPs in this region and the AS mRNA level in these samples was quantified using real-time PCR assay. The results indicated that three SNPs were found in the sequenced pAS fragment. They were -239C/T, -92G/A and -62A/T respectively. The frequency of -92A allele was higher in leukemic samples than that in nonleukemic control (P<0.05). The gene expression level differed among the individuals with genotype of the -92G/A SNP, and the descending order was as follows: GA heterozygote > AA homozygote > GG homozygote. It is concluded that some features in leukemia might associate with SNP on -92A locus, and this SNP in pAS can be one of the factors influencing transcriptional activity of AS gene. The existence of the -92A allele variant contributes to a high expression of AS gene.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the influence of reconstructive surgery for male urethral stricture on erectile function and sexual life quality.

METHODSWe analyzed retrospectively the clinical data of 326 male patients who underwent urethroplasty for urethral stricture in our department and evaluated their erectile function and sexual life quality.

RESULTSA total of 172 groups of valid data were collected, with the mean follow-up of 28.5 months. The mean scores on IIEF-5 (P=0.002) and sexual life quality (P=0.026) were statistically significantly reduced after surgery. Erectile dysfunction was found in 88 (51.2%) of the patients after urethroplasty, as compared with 56 (32.6%) preoperatively.

CONCLUSIONThe location of urethral stricture, surgical method and urethral stricture recurrence may affect the erectile function and sexual life quality of the patient, but both can be gradually improved with the time after urethroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Analgesic tolerance to opioids has been described in both experimental and clinical conditions, which may limit their clinical utility. This study investigated the effects of intrathecal adenosine A1 receptor agonist (R-PIA) on spinal morphine tolerance. METHODS: SD rats were given intrathecal injections of saline 10microliter, R-PIA 10microgram, morphine 10microgram, or R-PIA plus morphine combinations for 7 days (R-PIA given for days 1-7; days 1-3; or days 5-7). Antiallodynic testing using von Frey filaments was carried out before and 30 minutes after the drug injection. On day 8, an antiallodynic dose-response curve was constructed and the 50% effective dose (ED(50)) for morphine (given alone) was calculated for each study group. RESULTS: The coinjection group of R-PIA with morphine blocked the development of tolerance, as shown by the preservation of morphine antiallodynia over 7 days the concomitant decrease in the ED(50) values on day 8, compared with the morphine-alone group. Although additive analgesia over days 1-7 cannot be ruled out, the reductions of the ED(50) in the R-PIA and morphine combination group suggest some suppression of tolerance. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that intrathecal R-PIA prevents the development of spinal opioid tolerance. Future studies will be needed to examine the respective roles of supraspinal and peripheral sites of R-PIA and morphine interaction, and to investigate the mechanisms underlying the action of R-PIA on opioid tolerance.
