Objective To investigate effects of exogenous sonic hedgehog (Shh) on proliferation of neural stem cells (NSCs) in ependymal area and recovery of motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI) in adult rats.Methods Fifty-five female SD rats were involved in the study:five were selected as normal control group and fifty as Shh group (n =25) and SCI group (n =25) after being subjected to SCI at T10 segment using the modified Allen' s method according to the random number table.At 1,3,7,14,and 28 days after operation,restoration of hindlimb motor function of SD rats was assessed with modified Tarlov scale and changes of double positive cells of Brdu and Nestin with double-stained immunofluorescence.Results Tarlov scale revealed statistical difference between Shh and SCI groups since days 7 postoperatively (P ＜ 0.05).In the double-staining test,number of double positive cells of Brdu and Nestin was greater in Shh Group than in SCI Group since day 3 postoperatively [(97.20 ± 18.23) vs (72.60± 15.60),(153.60 ±25.76) vs (112.20 ±23.63),(133.80 ±21.02) vs (94.20± 18.70),(89.80 ± 15.42) vs (43.40 ± 10.62),P ＜ 0.05].Conclusion Exogenous Shh is conducive to the proliferation of ependymal NSCs and the recovery of motor function in SCI rats.

Objective:To investigate the impact of self-concealment,self-disclosure,coping style and per- ceived social support on university students'loneliness.Methods:Loneliness and related factors were assessed among 482 university students using scales including UCLA Loneliness Scale,Self-concealment Scale(SCS),Self-disclosure Index(SDI),Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ)and Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS).Results: The level of university students'loneliness was not high(36.5?7.4);males experienced more loneliness than fe- males(37.4?7.5/35.4?7.3,F=8.25,P0.05). Regression analysis showed that SCS,SCSQ and PSSS predicted UCLA effectively(?=0.207,-0.218,0.157, -0.380).The testing of mediating effect indicated that SCS had direct and indirect impact on UCLA through nega- tive coping style and PSSS;SDI had only indirect impact on UCLA through positive coping style and PSSS.Conclusion:SCS,SDI,SCSQ and PSSS are important factors influencing UCLA,and the intervention of univer- sity students'loneliness should focus on these variables.

Objective To study the effects of stratum corneum on the percutaneous absorption of fluorescein sodium (NaFl) liposome in rat skin. Methods Stratum corneum was stripped off by Scotch adhesive tape, and the NaFl content in the stratum corneum and the skin with no stratum corneum were detected by spectrofluorimetry at regular intervals. The dynamic permeated amount of different preparations of NaFl in the skin at different intervals in Franz diffuse cell was determined and the distribution of NaFl at 4 h after stripping off the stratum corneum was observed by fluorescence microscope. Results The concentrations of NaFl in the stratum corneum and the skin with no stratum corneum after applying liposome NaFl preparation were significantly higher than those of NaFl solution and gel preparations (P 0.05). Conclusions It is suggested that liposome can increase and change the penetration of NaFl into the stratum corneum and the skin with no stratum corneum in vitro. Hair follicular structure may not play an important role in the drug diffusion when stratum corneum is removed.

Objective To explore the therapeutic effects of statin in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in stable period. Methods 83 patients with COPD in stable period were recruited and randomly divided into two groups, treatment group (n = 41) and control group (n = 42).The control group received conventional routine therapy, and treatment group was given rosuvastatin calcium 20 mg once per day on the basis of routine treatment. The levels of sera C-reactive protein (CRP), pulmonary function (FEV1、FEVl%pred), and COPD assessment test (CAT) were observed at the time points of 0 week and 12th week, 24th week and 48th week were compared between two groups. Results At 12th week after the treatment, sera CRP levels, FEV1, FEV1%pred and CAT scores in either control group or treatment group showed some extent of improvements as compared to those at the time point of 0 week, and there was statistical difference of sera CRP levels and CAT scores between two groups (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference of FEV1, FEV1%pred between two groups (P > 0.05) .24th week and 48th week after the treatment; sera CRP levels, FEV, FEV1%pred and CAT scores in two groups all significantly improved and were statistical different between two groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion Statin can alleviate inflammatory reaction, improve pulmonary function and life quality of patients with COPD.

Objective To investigate the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the levels of hemorheology and C-reactive protein in patients with obstructive sleep hypopnea apnea syndrome (OSAHS). Methods 58 moderate to severe OSAHS subjects were selected as treatment group and 32 healthyadults were selected as control group. Hemorheology and C-reactive protein in all subjects were examined and compared. The levels of hemorheology and C-reactive protein were also examined and compared before and after 3 months CPAP treatment in treatment group. Results In treatment group, the levels of the whole blood viscosity and hs-CRP were significantly higher than those in control group (P < 0.01). After treatment of CPAP for three months, the levels of the whole blood viscosity and hs-CRP obviously decreased (P < 0.01). Conclusion Levels of hemorheology and hs-CRP are elevated in patients with OSAHS and CPAP therapy could effectively decrease serum levels of hemorheology and hs-CRP in patients with OSAHS.

BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to investigate the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) in rat cerebral cortex and the effects of β-sodium aescinate (SA) administration after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).METHODS: Sixty rats were divided into three groups: SA group, injected intraperitoneally with SA instantly after ROSC; control group, injected intraperitoneally with normal saline; and sham-operated group, without cardiac arrest or SA. The cardiac arrest model was established using asphyxiation and intravenous potassium chloride. Blood was sampled 1, 6, 12, and 24 hours after ROSC. Protein and mRNA levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and EPO were detected in the cerebral cortex by immunohistochemistry and real-time RT-PCR; serum levels of NSE and S100β were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.RESULTS: Serum S100β and NSE were signifi cantly increased in the control group versus the sham-operated group 1, 6, 12 and 24 hours after ROSC (P<0.05). Protein and mRNA levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and EPO were signifi cantly increased in the control rats (P<0.05). Serum NSE and S100β were significantly decreased in the SA group versus the control group 1, 6, 12 and 24 hours after ROSC (P<0.05). Protein and mRNA levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and EPO were signifi cantly increased in the SA group (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The expression of HIF-1α is increased in rat cerebral cortex after ROSC, and SA up-regulates the expression of HIF-1α. The up-regulation of HIF-1α improves the resistance of the cortex to ischemia and hypoxia and contributes to neuroprotection, possibly because of up-regulation of EPO and VEGF expression.

Objective To study the onset features and axiom of children disease in Duanguan region.Methods A statistic study was carried on 1 782 cases of children disease which confirmed by pathological examinations.The sex,age and pathology(congenital malformation,inflammatory disease,tumor-like lesions,benign tumors,malignant tumors)were registered.Results The inflammatory disease occupied the first place in incidence rate(44.61%),followed by tumor-like lesions(25.03%),benign tumors(23.34%),congenital malformation(5.22%)and malignant tumors(1.80%).Among inflammatory disease,appendicitis was the most common,the next was chronic tonsillitis and tuberculosis.Among tumor-like lesions,cystic disease was the most common;the next was polyps.Among benign tumors,vasculoma was the most common,the next was pilomatricoma,osteoid and chonodroid tumors.Among congenital malformation,ear fistula was the most common,the next was diverticulosis and intestineal duplicateion.Among the malignant tumors,the sarcoma of soft tissue was the most common,the next was the malignant peripheral nerve tumors and lymphoma.Conclusion Children's disease have its own characteristics which varied in age,sex and pathological types,and differ from those of adults.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on lung function in preterm infants. METHODS: According to the presence/absence or the severity of BPD, 72 preterm infants were divided into non-BPD group (n=44), mild BPD group (n=15) and moderate BPD group (n=13). Lung function was assessed by plethysmography on days 7, 14 and 28 after birth. RESULTS: The preterm infants in the three groups had gradual increases in tidal volume per kilogram (TV/kg), functional residual capacity (FRC), ratio of time to peak tidal expiratory flow to total expiratory time (%T-PF) and ratio of volume to peak tidal expiratory flow to total expiratory volume (%V-PF) on days 7, 14 and 28 after birth, while there were gradual reductions in effective airway resistance per kilogram (Reff/kg) and respiratory rate (RR) (P<0.05). Compared with the non-BPD group on days 7, 14 and 28 after birth, the mild and moderate BPD groups had significantly lower TV/kg, FRC, %T-PF, and %V-PF and significantly higher Reff/kg and RR (P<0.05). On day 7 after birth, the moderate BPD group had significantly higher airway resistance, Reff/kg and FRC/kg than the mild BPD group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS There is a certain degree of pulmonary function impairment in preterm infants with BPD. Dynamic monitoring of lung function by plethysmography is useful for assessing lung development in the neonatal period in these infants.

BACKGROUNDTo evaluate the influence ultrasonic processing on the aggregation of PrP(Sc) in the brain extracts prepared from the scrapie-infected hamsters, and to seek for the way to prepare lower molecular PrP(Sc) polymer.

METHODSThe extracts of infected brains were prepared with a lysis solution, and treated with ultrasonics at various conditions during the different phases. The distribution and aggregation state of PrP(Sc) were analyzed by proteinase K treated. Western blot, and afterwards, quantitatively calculated with a commercially supplied software Image Totaltech.

RESULTSThe amount of PrP(Sc) in the supernatant of brain homogenates was 1.29-to 1.58-fold increased with appropriate sonication (15 s for 30 times). At the same conditions of ultrasound, the PrP amount in the supernatant prepared from the scrapie-infected hamster brain was significantly increased, whereas that prepared from healthy animal used as normal control showed little change. Comparative analyses of PrP(Sc) pellets prepared by high-speed centrifugation revealed that about 90% PrP(Sc) released into supernatant after ultrasound processing.

CONCLUSIONAppropriate sonication of homogenate of scrapie-infected brain increases the extracted amount of PrP(Sc), being favorable to laboratory diagnosis. Larger molecular PrP(Sc) aggregates can be crashed by ultrasonic processing, engendering lower molecular PrP(Sc) polymers.
