Objective To study the influence of qiqishen granules on the cellular and humoral immune functions in model mice. Methods Six-week-old mice were divided into control group and qiqishen granule (high, medium and low dose) groups. The suspension of chicken red blood cells was injected into the mouse abdominal cavity. The influence of qiq-ishen granules on the phagocytic function of the macrophages in mouse abdominal cavity was observed. The sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were prepared. The blood corpuscle coagulation was observed, and the serum hemolysin was detected. The ac-tivity of the mouse natural killer (NK) cells were detected by the interaction between the target cell (YAC-1) and spleen cell (the response cell). The influence of qiqishen granules on the cellular immunity was detected by the lymphocyte transforming assay. The influence of qiqishen granules on organ/body weight ratio was measured by calculating the thymus/body and spleen/body ratio. Results Compared with the control, qiqishen granules significantly improved phagocytic function of the macrophages in mouse abdominal cavity. The humoral immune function was also improved in mice. The activity of NK cell was enhanced by qiqishen granules, which also enhanced the lymphocyte transforming induced by the concanavalin (Con) A. There was no significant influence in the organ/body weight ratio. Conclusion The qiqishen granules could increase the im-munomodulating effect, indicating it would have a good using prospect.

Objective To use a simple bedside technique to verify the pathophysiological mechanism of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in different races. Method The Valsalva maneuver (VM) was performed in patients referred to a specialty PH clinic. The blood pressure response of patients to VM was in different fashions. The blood pressure (BP) was measured by using cuff and stethoscope. When the cuff was inflated to 15 mmHg above the systolic pressure, sound could be heard by auscultation during VM and when the cuff was deflated the sound disappeared over 3 heart beats which was considered as abnormal BP response, and less than 3 heart beats defined as normal BP response. The right heart catheterization in patients with PH as a part of the standard evaluation. Results This study included 84 patients with a mean age of (63 ± 16) years. Those with abnormal BP response to VM had higher pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) [(22.5±6.6) vs. (11.9±4.3) mmHg, P <0.0001] and lower pulmonary vascular resistance [(5.8 ± 4.0) vs. (8.1 ± 4.6 ) WU, P = 0.01]. Blood pressure response to VM did not correlate with mean pulmonary artery (PA) pressure [(46.2 ± 9.9) vs. (43.4 ±10.4) mmHg, P =0.20] or cardiac index (both 2.4 ± 0.6 L/min/m2). The abnormal BP response to VM had high sensitivity (89.4%), specificity (86.1%) and accuracy (86.9%) for determining PAWP> 15 mmHg.Conclusions BP response to Valsalva maneuver provides important information about left heart filling pressures in patients with PH.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HA/CS) complex may act as a drug carrier for drug release, but little is reported about the release amount and antibacterial effect of minocycline-HA/CS (Mino-HA/CS) complex. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the in vitro release and antibacterial property of Mino-HA/CS complex. METHODS: HA/CS and Mino-HA/CS were prepared using co-precipitation method. The surface and cross-section features of the complexes were observed under scanning electron microscopy. The porosities were measured according to Archimedes Principle. The release of minocycline hydrochloride was measured by high performance liquid chromatography with the simulated saliva as drug release media. In vitro antibacterial effect on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Staphylococcus aureus were measured by bacteria-inhibiting ring method. Biological toxicities were evaluated via cel counting kit-8cel proliferation assay. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The porosity of Mino-HA/CS was larger than that of HA/CS, with the average porosity of 53.99%. Single-day release amount of Mino-HA/CS could maintain at the level of 0.5-1 μg per day for a long-term. Bacteriostatic rings of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Staphylococcus aureus stil existed clearly after 7 days. Cel proliferation assays showed that Mino-HA/CS extract had the significant effect on promoting cel proliferation. These findings indicate that the Mino-HA/CS sustains the release of minocycline at a relatively stable level within a longer period, shows good inhibitory effect on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Staphylococcus aureus and promotes the proliferation of periodontal ligament cel s.

Objective To study whether myeloperoxidase (MPO) can provide prognostic information in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Methods The study population consisted of 274 consecutive patients with ACS. All patients underwent coronary angiography which showed significant coronary artery disease and blood samples were collected at admission. Follow-ups were scheduled at 1, 3, and 6 months. The end point included cardiac death, acute myocardial infarction (MI), percutaneous or surgical revascularization. Results Patients with elevated MPO serum levels (MPO ≥ 72.2 AUU/L) were more likely to have diabetics and had a history of coronary events. Kaplan-Meier event rate curves with accumulative incidence of end point at 6-month follow-up in the MPO ≥ 72.2 AUU/L group was significantly higher than in MPO<72.2 AUU/L group. Conclusions MPO may be a powerful predictor of adverse outcome in patients with ACS.
