BACKGROUND: The small change of the membrane potential (Em) of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) could result in significant alteration in tension, and the membrane depolarization was closely associated with the development of hypertension.OBJECTIVE: To study the resting Em of VSMC from the middle cerebral artery (MCA) of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and the reactivity of Em to KCl and norepinephrine (NE).DESIGN: An animal experiment of comparative analysis.SETTING: Institute of Materia Medica, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences.MATERIALS: Eighteen male SHRSP and 26 male Wistar rats were used.METHODS: ① Rats in both groups were anesthetized with intraperitoneal injection of ethyl carbamate (1 g/kg), the brains were removed quickly, and the Em of VSMC was recorded by intracellular microelectrodes. ② The effects of different concentrations of KC1 (10, 20, 50 mmol/L) and NE (10-7,10-6, 10-5 mol/L) on the Em of VSMC were observed.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Em of VSMC in both groups; ②Effects of different concentrations of KC1 and NE on the Em of VSMC.RESULTS: ① The Em was obviously lower in SHRSP than in the Wistar rats [(-48.2±3.1), (-64.4±4.3) mV]. ② Both KC1 (10, 20, 50 mmol/L)and NE (10-7, 10-6, 10-5 mol/L) could cause the depolarization of Em of MCA in a concentration-dependent manner. The reactivity to MCA of SHRSP was obviously increased as compared with the Wistar rats.CONCLUSION: The resting Em of VSMC from the MCA of SHRSP was lower, and the reactivity of VSMC to KCl and NE was significantly stronger than that of Wistar rats.

Depression and insomnia are intimately related. Depressed patients usually manifest sleep discontinuity and early awakening, reduced or no slow wave sleep (SWS) and shortened latency of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These sleep abnormalities are very similar to those caused by over activated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis with stress. Therefore, the animal models developed by post-traumatic stress disorder or chronic unpredictable mild stress could be used to evaluate drugs which have effects of both anti-depression and improvement of sleep quality, and to provide a more reliable platform for further studis on the mechanisms of depression and accompanied insomnia. This review mainly focuses on the typical features of sleep disturbance of depression, possible pathophysiological mechanisms, establishment of animal stress models and analysis of their abnormal sleep characteristics.

Objective To explore mechanisms of sustained and transient effects in encoding processes of emotional memory by examining activation of amygdala via functional MRI and to provide evidence for understanding the underlying neural mechanism related to emotional memory disorders further. Methods Twenty two subjects (aged from 20 to 24 years old) participated in the study and mixed blocked/event-related design was adopted. Sixty negatively emotional pictures and sixty neutral scene pictures were used. Functional MRI scanning was performed while subjects were doing encoding tasks. Behavioral data were acquired during retrieval. Correlation analyses of functional MRI data and simples paired t -test of behavioral performance were performed with SPM2 and SPSS13.0 statistical software, respectively. Results Significant differences of behavioral performance ( t= 2.791,P= 0.01 ) was found between emotional (3.15 ± 0.14) and neutral (2.25 ± 0.08 ) pictures. A whole-brain voxelwise correlation analysis between functional MRI and emotional enhancement effect indicated that the transient effect of emotional enhancement of memory involved the left amygdala, left hippocampus and left lateral orbitofrontal cortex, while the sustained effect involved the right amygdala, right hippocampus, right inferior frontal gyrus, right medial and lateral orbitofrontal cortex. Region of interest analysis demonstrated that the sustained effect was related to the right amygdala (r= 0.50, P = 0.019 ), which was different from transient effect ( Z = 1.655, P = 0.049 ),while the transient effect was correlated with the left amygdala (r=0.65, P=0.001 ) ,which was different from sustained effect( Z= 2.512, P=0.006). Conclusion Different neural mechanisms are involved in sustained and transient effects of emotional memory encoding. The right amygdala is responsible for sustained effect and the left amygdala is responsible for transient effect ,respectively. The results confirm and extend the model of the left-transient/right-sustained effect.

Objective To investigate the changes of plasma free carnitine (FC) concentrations in preterm infants supplemented with L-carnitine, and to provide a reference for routine preterm infants L-carnitine supplements. Methods A total of 99 preterm infants supplemented with 10 mg/(kg·d) L-carnitine on days 2 and 5 after birth, and 65 full term infants from Department of Neonatology, the Fifth People′s Hospital of Dongguan during July 2014 to December 2015 were recruited in this study , and filter-paper blood spots were collected by heel prick on days 1, 3 and 7. FC was measured using electron spray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS). Results Concentrations of FC decreased steadily from day 1 to day 7 in full term infants , while it remained the same level during the first week after birth as at birth. Additionally, concentrations of FC were significantly higher in preterm infants than full term infants on day 1 after birth. Conclusions The reasonable L-carnitine supplements may keep the levels of plasma FC at the levels at birth , which is important for fatty acid metabolism in preterm infants.

Annals of Dermatology 2015;27(4):435-438
Eccrine spiradenoma usually occurs as solitary tender nodules. However, it rarely occurs as multifocal localized tumors or has zosteriform distribution. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman with a 20-year history of itchy lesions on the left side of the back and forearm with a zosteriform distribution. Before disease onset, almost no patients have inducing factors, but our patient received an injection beforehand; however, whether this was coincidental or causative remains unknown. The lesions became very itchy after perspiration or eating spicy food, which has never been reported. A literature search revealed 22 cases of multiple segmental eccrine spiradenoma; we summarized the clinical characteristic in order to aid diagnosis and treatment selection.
