Objective To compare the morphological differences in soleus between tail-suspended and 30-month-old rats. Methods Fourty-two male rats were randomly divided into seven groups:5 d,7 d and 14 d tail-suspended and their synchronous control groups,30-month-old group. The cross-sectional area(CSA)and percentage of MHC Ⅰ/Ⅱ fibers were measured in immunohistochemically stained sections and CSA was normalized by body weight. Results Wet weight, relative wet weight,CSA and normalized CSA in unloaded soleus decreased significantly as compared with the synchronous control. The percentage of MHC Ⅰ fibers decreased, but that of MHC Ⅱ fibers increased in unloaded soleus. The wet weight and CSA of soleus in 30-month-old rats increased, but the relative wet weight and normalized CSA reduced significantly as compared with 14-day synchronous control. The relative wet weight and normalized CSA of soleus in 30-month-old rat were similar to that of 14 d tail-suspended group. The percentage of MHC Ⅰ/Ⅱ fibers of soleus in 30-month-old rat and in 5 d,7 d,and 14 d of synchronous control groups kept constant value. Conclusion It's suggested that the atrophic process of soleus is slower in 30-month-old rats than that in the tail-suspended rates. The reduction of soleus relative wet weight and normalized CSA appears early in aged rats, but the absolute and relative wet weight of soleus decrease simultaneously in tail-suspended rats.

Objective: To investigate the expression and prognostic significance of insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP5) in gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC). Methods:IGFBP5 expression in tissue samples from 236 GAC patients was analyzed us-ing immunohistochemical methods. These patients had undergone surgical resection between 20003 and 2006 in Sun Yat-Sen Universi-ty Cancer Center. The relationship between IGFBP5 expression and clinicopathological factors in the 236 GAC patients was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The significance of IGFBP5 in predicting the survival status of these patients was analyzed using Ka-plan-Meier survival analysis and Cox's proportional hazards regression model. Results:Immunohistochemical staining data indicated that IGFBP5 expression was significantly decreased in 159 of the total GAC cases (67.4%). Of the 62 cases with well-and moderately differentiated GAC, 31 (50%) exhibited reduced IGFBP5 expression. Of the 174 cases with poorly differentiated GAC, 128 showed re-duced IGFBP5 expression. Reduced IGFBP5 expression was also observed in female patients and in patients with tumors over 5 cm in size or with poorly differentiated tumors (P<0.05). The reduced expression of IGFBP5 was common in the tumors that were staged as T3+4a/b andⅢ/Ⅳ(P<0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that the reduced expression of IGFBP5 was associated with poor prognosis in GAC patients (P<0.001). Cox regression analysis identified IGFBP5 expression as an independent prognostic factor for the overall survival of these cancer patients (HR=1.897, P=0.029). Conclusion: IGFBP5 expression is reduced in GAC tissues, and IGFBP5 independently predicts an unfavorable prognosis in GAC patients.

Objective To observe the effect of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback on lower limbs motor function in stroke patients with hemiplegia. Methods 60 stroke patients with hemiplegia were divided into treatment group (n=30) and control group (n=30). Both groups accepted exercise therapy, and the treatment group accpted EMG biofeedback in addition. They were assessed with Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Barthel Index (BI) before and 4 weeks after treatment. Results There was no significant difference between 2 groups in the scores of FMA, BBS and BI before treatments (P>0.05). All the scores significantly improved after treatments in both groups (P<0.05), and improved more in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Electromyographic biofeedback can further improve lower limbs motor function, balance and activities of daily living of stroke patients with hemiplegia.

Objective: To explore the association of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in N-formylpeptide receptor (FPR) gene with the susceptibility of aggressive periodontitis (AgP). Methods: A total of 94 AgP patients and 73 healthy controls were entered into the study. Peripheral blood sample was obtained from each subject by venepuncture. Genomic DNA was isolated from each sample. The target fragment of FPR gene was amplified by PCR. The SNPs in FPR gene were detected by denature high performance liquid chromatography ( DHPLC) combined with DNA sequencing. Results: There were two non-synonymous SNPs in the 370 bp FPR gene fragment;289C/A and 301G/C. The 289C/Awas a novel SNP. No variation in nucleotides 329 and 378 was detected. There were no statistically significant differences in distributions of the genotypes and alleles for FPR289 and FPR301 between AgP patients and healthy controls. Using multivariate logistic regression (adjusted for age and gender) , it was showed that the adjusted Ors of AgP for the C~+ genotype and allele C of FPR301 combined with smoking were 5.74 and 5.20 respectively. Conclusion: The presence of the C~+ genotype/allele C of FPR301 together with smoking conferred a higher risk for AgP. The result suggests that the SNPs in FPR gene may not be associated with the susceptibility of AgP in Chinese.
