Objective To analyse the effective rate and adverse effect of only levetiracetam (LEV) versus LEV plus other drugs in the treatment of middle and old aged patients with partial seizures (PS) and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizure (SGTCS).Methods The self-control study was used and 59 elderly patients with PS and SGTCS were treated with LEV single or plus drug (therapeutic dose was 1000-2000 mg/d,bid).The effective rate and the side effects of LEV were observed and compared between LEV single and plus drug or between the patients with only epilepsy versus epilepsy plus other diseases, respectively. Results The effective ratios at the end of 3,6,9and 12 months after LEV treatment were 76.2%,70.6%,64.3% and 66.7%,respectively and there were no significant difference among above time points (x2=1.911,P>0.05).A chi-square test showed that the differences in effective ratios were not statistically significant (P> 0.05) between single and combination of drugs (x2 =1.437) and between two groups of patients at the end of 12 months.Clinical effect of LEV showed no remarkable difference between different types of epilepsy at the end of 6 months (x2 =1.315,P>0.05)and 12 months(x2 =2.700,P>0.05).The control ratio of epileptic attack was higher in single LEV than in combination drugs (x2 =10.83,P<0.05).The total side effects were 13.6%,including somnolence, weakness, anorexia, headache, irritability and forgetfulness. Conclusions The curative effects of levetiracetam single or in combination are definite, stable and continuous for PS and SGTCS,especially in combination with other diseases.

ObjectiveTo investigate the finasteride application during the off-cycle of intermittent androgen blockade (IAB) in patients with advanced prostate cancer treated with IAB.MethodsEighty-seven patients with advanced prostate cancer were divided into two groups: forty-nine patients received IAB (group A), and thirty-eight patients underwent IAB and finasteride during the off-cycle of IAB (group B). The time of treatment cycle and the time to disease progression were compared between the two groups. ResultsThe patients in group A completed 89 treatment cycles and the mean cycle length was (12.8±5.4) months [treatment time and non-treatment time were (6.6±3.5) months and (7.1±4.8) months, respectively]. The patients in group B completed 85 cycles and the mean cycle length was (15.3±5.9) months [treatment time and non-treatment time were (6.9±3.2) months and (9.2v±3.9) months, respectively]. There was a significant difference between group A and B in the mean cycle length and the non-treatment time (P=0.0428,P=0.03).The 3-year progression rate was ( 34.8±3.5 )% in group A and ( 28.4±2.7)% in groups B ( P=0.035). ConclusionsThe application of finasteride during the off-cycle of IAB in patients with advanced prostate cancer treated with intermittent androgen blockade (IAB) can delay progression of advanced prostate cancer.

To induce endothelial cell, canine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were separated from bone marrow by density gradient centrifugation. The isolated MSCs were induced to form endothelial-like cell in the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), endothelial growth factor (EGF) and so on. These results showed that the cells uniformly took on a cobblestone morphology under the light microscope, and cell nucleolus was in the middle of the cells. The cells displayed Weibel-Palade bodies under the transmission electron microscope. vWF, a specific marker of endothelial cell was positive in the cells. The above results demonstrate that MSCs may be differentiated into endothelial cells in vitro.

The curative efficacy of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting (PTAS) in the treatment of patients with ischemia cerebrovascular disease caused by artery stenosis was explored. The clinical data of 111 patients with ischemia cerebrovascular disease receiving PTAS in Guangdong Province General Hospital from Aug. 2007 to Nov. 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. In total 132 stents were implanted in the 111 patients. The mortality and rate of neural and non-neural complications were assessed perioperatively. Outcomes [including the frequency of transient ischemic attack (TIA), stroke, or death from vascular diseases) were assessed after operation. NIHSS rating was performed in all cases before and at first week, 6th month and 12th month after the operation. The PTAS success rate was 100%. The degree of stenosis was reduced after PTAS. The total complication rate during perioperative period was 15.3% (the rate of neural complications was 3.6%). Sixty-seven patients were followed up. Three patients (4.48%) developed cerebrovascular events within 1 month, containing one case of TIA, one case of ipsilateral mild stroke and one case of contralateral mild stroke. No severe stroke or death was observed. During a follow-up period of 12 months 7 patients had cerebrovascular events (10.44%), including 2 cases of ipsilateral TIA (2.99%), 2 cases of ipsilateral mild stroke and 2 cases of contralateral mild stroke (2.99%), one case of severe stroke (1.49%). In 13 patients receiving DSA re-examination one year after PTAS, 2 patients (15.38%) had in-stent restenosis. NIHSS scores were obviously decreased during a follow-up period as compared with those pre-operation (P<0.05). It was concluded that PTAS could significantly alleviate the neural function deficit of the patients with ischemia cerebrovascular disease. The success rate of PTAS was high, and the rate of complications was lower and the clinical outcomes were satisfactory. PTAS is a safe and effective therapeutic method, though the long-term outcomes need further study.

Objective:To explore the influence of chronic rhinitis on depressive symptoms of college freshmen and the mediating effect of avoidant personality. Methods:A cluster sampling method was used to survey 8 079 college freshmen from April 2018 to October 2018 using the Beck depression inventory and the avoidant personality diagnosis questionnaire based on DSM-Ⅳ.SPSS 25.0 software was used for descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation analysis, and the macro program PROCESS version 3.3 was used for the mediating effect.Results:(1) The detection rates of chronic rhinitis, avoidant personality and depressive symptoms were 22.90% (1 850/8 079), 19.22% (1 553/8 079) and 6.28% (507/8 079). The scores for avoidant personality disorder and depressive symptoms were 1.00 (0, 3.00) and 1.00 (0, 4.00), respectively. (2) The chronic rhinitis, avoidant personality and depressive symptoms were positively correlated ( rchronic rhinitis-avoidant personality=0.094, rchronic rhinitis-depressive symptoms=0.095, ravoidant personality-depressive symptoms=0.416, all P<0.001). (3) Chronic rhinitis could positively predict depressive symptoms ( β=1.113, P<0.001). (4) Avoidant personality played a mediating role between chronic rhinitis and depressive symptoms ( β=1.094, P<0.001), and accounted for 44.92%(0.500/1.113) of the total effect. Conclusion:Chronic rhinitis directly affect the depressive symptoms of college freshmen, and indirectly affect the depressive symptoms of college freshmen through the mediating role of avoidant personality.
