Objective To investigate the effects of penehyclidine hydrochloride (PHCD) pretreatment on expression of NF-κB and iNOS in rats with LPS-induced brain injury. Methods One hundred and five male SD rats weighing 200-220 g were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=21 each): group Ⅰ normal saline (NS);group Ⅱ LPS (L);group Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ PHCD 0.05, 0.15, 0.45 mg/kg (D1,2,3). The animals were anesthetized with chloral hydrate 350 mg/kg. Brain injury was induced by intra-arterial LPS 150 μg administered via left internal carotid artery in group Ⅱ-Ⅴ. In group Ⅲ,Ⅳ, and Ⅴ PHCD 0.05, 0.15 and 0.45 mg/kg were given intraperitoneally (IP) at 10 min before intra-arterial LPS. The animals were decapitated at 4, 6 and 12 h after administration of PHCD (n=7 at each time point in each group). The brains were immediately removed for determination of water content, expression of NF-κB and iNOS protein and examination with light and electron microscope. Results Water content of the brain and expression of NF-κB and iNOS protein were significantly higher in group L, D1, D2 and D3 than in group NS and were significantly lower in group D2 and D3 than in group L. Intra-arterial LPS produced severe damage to the brain which was significantly attenuated by PHCD in group D2 and D3. Conclusion PHCD 0.15,0.45 mg/kg pretreatment can attenuate LPS-induced brain injury by inhibiting the up-regulation of expression of NF-κB and iNOS.

Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of F wave in diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).Methods F and M wave parameters were measured in 106 patients with diabetes mellitus and 75 normal persons, including the minimum latency, duration, amplitude and area of F wave, and the amplitude and the area of M wave. Results (1) In the 30 patients with diabetes mellitus without peripheral neuropathy, there were 8 cases with prolonged the duration of F wave, 4 cases with prolonged the minimum latency of F wave, 2 cases with increased in the ratio of the area of F/M wave. (2) The minimum latency prolonged of F wave, the ratio of the amplitude of F/M wave and the ratio of the area of F/M wave significantly increased in the 76 patients with DPN, the duration of F wave prolonged in the mild DPN but no one revealed remarkable abnormal. (3) In the controls, the function of upper limit of the minimum latency of F wave (Y) and leg length (X) was Y=12.3+48.8X 2. Conclusion (1) F wave could be served as sensitive index to the early diagnosis of DPN, and might detect subclinical DPN. (2) The proximal nerve segment could be affected without the lesions of the distal nerve segment in patients with DPN, and it suggested that vascular factor plays an important role in the mechanism of DPN.

Objective To explore influence of thoracic duct ligation on lipid metabolism after esophagectomy. Methods Seventy-four patients with esophageal cancer received esophagectomy were divided into two groups by their thoracic duct ligation, 39 in ligation group and 35 in non-ligation group. All the patients were fed with nutrients through nasal-duodenal tube placed during operation from the 1 st day to the 8th day after surgery, and started taking liquid diet on the 6th day. Blood specimens were collected from the patients on the 1st day after admission, the 9th day, one month and three months after surgery, respectively for biochemical analysis, including determinations of total cholesterol(TC),triglyeeride(TG),high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ( HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ( LDL-C) . Databetween the two groups were compared with statistical analysis. Results No significant difference in plasma levels of TC, TG and HDI.-C was found between the two groups at varied time points. Plasma level of LDL-C in the ligation group significantly decreased on the 9th day after surgery, as compared with that in the nonligation group ( P < 0. 05), and went down to the lowest level one month after surgery. Conclusions Chylomicron was blocked to enter blood stream and production of LDL-C decreased by thoracic duct ligation, which affect lipid absorption and metabolism leading to poor early nutrition in patients with esophagealsurgery due to slower establishment of collateral circulation.
