Objective To study the correlation between Candida strains and vulvovaginal candidiasis. Methods Two groups of Candida albicans strains were chosen. Strains of group A and group B were isolated from vaginal discharge of normal women and of patients with candidal vaginitis respectively. The two methods, AMS (automated microbiological detection and identification system) and amino black stain, were applied to detect two phenotypic parameters, biochemical reaction of the strains and secretory capacity of the proteinases respectively, and analogous analysis was performed then. Results There was a significant difference in the levels of adonitol (P

Seen from the development of the treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC),although great progress has been made on the optimization of the treatment, the patients' overall survival (OS) has not been greatly improved compared with other tumors of digestive system such as colorectal cancer. That is mainly because of the early microvascular invasion (MIV) and portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) which are among the most important reasons for poor prognosis in HCC.Thus we overviewed the recent research findings on the treatment of HCC with PVTT,which might help the clinicians select the optimal therapeutic strategy.

Objective To investigate the effects of nasal tip reduction with inner incision combined with external fixation, namely,to evaluate the formation of bilateral alar groove which is en hanced by external fixation with small splints, after removing interdomal fat pad as well as adjusting alar cartilage to reduce nasal tip. Methods Alar cartilage and interdomal fat pad were exposed via the bilateral nasal vestibular incision to remove fat pad and part of enlarged lateral foot of alar cartilage. After suture of incision, based on the tissue removal, plastic splint was used for external fixation of bilateral nasal tip and alar groove for one week,to enhance the formation of alar groove. Results A total of 143 patients were followed up for more than 6 months after operation.Photographs taken before and after operation were compared, suggesting obviously smaller nasal tip and significant alar groove.Left and right alar groove space was decreased from preoperative (28.23±3.31) mm to post operative (23.72±2.65) mm,and nasal tip alar angle was decreased from (104.02±9.57)°to (87.78± 6.98)°,with statistical significance (P<0.05).Slightly asymmetric nasal alars were found in 6 patients during follow-up examination, while tiny scars caused by splints (at 0.6 cm from the edge of splints) were found in 1 patient. Conclusions On the basis of nasal tip reduction with inner incision, the method of suture with small splints combined with external fixation is simple, effective and available.

With the expansion of herbal medicine (HM) market, the issue on how to apply up-to-date analytical tools on qualitative analysis of HMs to assure their quality, safety and efficacy has been arousing great attention. Due to its inherent characteristics of accurate mass measurements and multiple stages analysis, the integrated strategy of liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) and ion trap mass spectrometry (IT-MS) is well-suited to be performed as qualitative analysis tool in this field. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview on the potential of this integrated strategy, including the review of general features of LC-IT-MS and LC-TOF-MS, the advantages of their combination, the common procedures for structure elucidation, the potential of LC-hybrid-IT-TOF/MS and also the summary and discussion of the applications of the integrated strategy for HM qualitative analysis (2006-2011). The advantages and future developments of LC coupled with IT and TOF-MS are highlighted.

Background and purpose. Gastric stromal tumor (GST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract and most often arises in the stomach. In the past, surgery was the only effective treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of GST has been revolutionized over the past, since expression of the receptor tyrosine kinase KIT (CD117) was shown to occur on these tumors, the outcome of GST treatment has dramatically been improved. This study focused on the therapeutic experience of GST and analyzed the pathological features and prognostic factors of GST in our center. Methods: All the 26 cases underwent surgical resection and three of them were treated over 6 months with imatinib 400 mg/d. The clinical pathological and follow-up data of 26 patients with GST admitted in our hospital between Jan. 2000 and Dec. 2008 were analyzed retrospectively. Results. All the cases underwent curative resections, including palliative liver resection in 3 patients with liver metastasis. Recurrence occured on 6 patients, including 1 case with low risk group, 1 case with intermediate risk group, 4 cases with high risk group. Tumor size ranged from 2 to 15 cm with the mean of 5.5 cm. The immunohistochemistry results revealed that the positive rates of CD117, CD34 and Vimentin were 92.3%, 80.8% and 96.2% respectively. After operation, three patients accepted imatinib mesylate therapy over 6 months. Two of them were alive, but one had liver metastasis. The follow-up period ranged from 4 to 36 months (median: 28 months). Four cases were lost. The 1-, 3-year overall survival rates of 26 cases were 96.2% and 84.6%. Conclusion: Tumor size, location, mitosis and immunohistochemical data are important variables to evaluate GST behavior and prognosis. Surgical resection is the main therapy for GST and targeted therapy will improve the prognosis.

Objective To investigate the effect of genistein on the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 protein in PC12 cells transfected with mutant APP695 Type. Methods PC12 cells were transfected with pIRES2-EGFP plasmid or pIRES2-EGFP/APP695MT expression plasmid, and then divided into normal control group,Unladen group,APP695 transfected group,GST treatment group(5 μmol/L,15 μmol/L).The Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression in PC12 cells was measured by Immunocytochemistry SABC and Western-blot.Results Immunocyto-chemistry SABC showed that:compared with the normal control group, the expression of bax protein in APP695 transfected group was strongly increased((78.02 ± 1.26) %,P<0.01)) and the expression of bcl-2 protein was very weak oppositely ((15.40 ± 0.72) %,P<0.01)).Compared with APP695 transfected group, the expression of bax protein in cells of 15umol/L GST treatment group was significantly decreased((22.35 ± 0.49) %,P<0.01))and the expression of bcl-2 protein in these cells was strongly increased ((68.11 ± 0.24) %,P <0.01)).Western-Blot showed that:compared with the normal control group, the expression of bax protein in APP695 transfected group was markedly increased and the expression of Bcl-2 protein was significantly decreased.Compared with the APP695 transfected group, the expression of Bax protein was markedly decreased and the expression of Bcl-2 protein was significantly increased in the cells of the GST treatment groups. Conclusion GST can reduce the expression of bax protein and the increased expression of Bcl-2 protein has protective effect on PC12 cells transfected with APP696MT.

Objective To explore the prognosis of patients with BCLC-B hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) receiving LR + MCT vs TACE.Methods BCLC-B HCC patients undergoing LR + MCT (107 cases) and TACE (65 cases) were retrospectively evaluated,in terms of 30-day mortality rate, the median survival, early and long term survival rate and complications. Results The hospital mortality rate was similar between the two groups (x2 =0.285,P =0.593).However,the LR + MCT group were with a significantly higher postoperative complication rate than the TACE group (x2 =4.694,P =0.03).At the same time, the LR + MCT group had significantly higher median Survival rates (x2 =9.135,P =0.003),but,there was no statistical difference for five-year survival (x2 =4.767,P =0.434).Conclusions LR + MCT are as safe as TACE for patients with BCLC-B HCC,and it provides longer median survival rates.
