Objective To realize the relationship between substance P(SP) and abnormal gastrointestinal tran- sit. Methods By radioimmunoassay, concentration of SP in sigmoid mucosa was determined in 12 healthy volun- teers, 15 slow and 10 fast transit patients. ResultsThe concentration was (27.68±15.42)μg/g, (24.07+5.76)μg/g and (28.61± 18.34)μg/g,respectively. They had no statistical difference. Conclusion There was no relationship be- tween concentration of SP in sigmoid mucosa and abnormal gastrointestinal transit.

Objective:This study aims to investigate the protein expression of coxsackie-virus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) in partial subtypes of pulmonary adeno-carcinoma, as well as its expression with clinico-pathological factors and prognosis. Methods:CAR expression was immunohistochemically assessed in 137 cases of lung cancer with bronchiole-alveolar carcinoma (PWBF) fea-tures, and analyzed in relation to various clinico-pathological parameters. All data were analyzed using SPSS statistics software, and Ka-plan-Meier survival curves were constructed. A Log-rank test was also conducted. Results: The CAR positive rates in PWBF, other types of lung cancer, and normal lung tissue were 71.5%, 50.0%, and 13.3%, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In addition, a statistically significant difference was observed between the positive expression of CAR and other clini-co-pathologic parameters, such as pathological type and histological differentiation. No statistical significance was observed in other pa-rameters, such as gender, age, smoking, and tumor diameter. Patients with CAR positivity were characterized by longer survival times than the others;however, this difference did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion:CAR is related to the occurrence and devel-opment of lung cancer, especially PWBF. The higher expression of CAR in PWBF for gene therapy with adenovirus vectors opened a broader space. The conspicuous regulation of CAR may be reliable evidence and may bright future for the gene therapy of other types of lung cancer.

This article mainly summarise the results of the chemical compositions and their pharmacological activities of Arnebiae Radix since 1966. The chemistry components isolated from Arnebiae Radix are mainly naphthoquinone, monoterpene phenol and quinone, phenolic acids and their salts, alkaloids, aliphatic and esters. Pharmacological results showed that the chemical compositions and the extracts of Arnebiae Radix have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, hepatoprotection, antioxidant, anti-tumor and immune function and other activities. This article hopefully to provide a reference for further research, development and utilization of Arnebiae Radix.

It is unanimously accepted that stroke is a highly heterogeneous disorder.Different subtypes of ischemic stroke may have different risk factors,clinical features,and prognoses.The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors,clinical characteristics,and prognoses of different subtypes of ischemic stroke defined by the Trial of ORG10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) criteria.We prospectively analyzed the data from 530 consecutive patients who were admitted to our hospital with acute ischemic stroke within 7 days of stroke onset during the study period.Standardized data assessment was used and the cause of ischemic stroke was classified according to the TOAST criteria.Patients were followed up till 30 and 90 days after stroke onset.It was found that large-artery atherosclerosis was the most frequent etiology of stroke (37.4％),and showed the highest male preponderance,the highest prevalence of previous transient ischemic attack,and the longest hospital stay among all subtypes.Small artery disease (36.4％) was associated with higher body mass index,higher plasma triglycerides,and lower plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol than cardioembolism.Cardioembolism (7.7％),which was particularly common in the elderly (i.e.,individuals aged 65 years and older),showed the highest female preponderance,the highest prevalence of atrial fibrillation,the earliest presentation to hospital after stroke onset,the most severe symptoms on admission,the maximum complications associated with an adverse outcome,and the highest rate of stroke recurrence and mortality.Our results suggest that ischemic stroke should be regarded as a highly heterogeneous disorder.Studies involving risk factors,clinical features,and prognoses of ischemic stroke should differentiate between etiologic stroke subtypes.

Background Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a serious ocular disease which may cause blindness.The primary pathogenesis of NVG is ischemic retinopathy derived by central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and diabetic retinopathy (DR).Clinical characteristics of NVG are variable based on the difference of primary diseases,such as CRVO and DR.However,there is a few studies regarding the diffcrcnces of NVG initiated by CRVO and DR.Objective This study was to compare the clinical characteristics in NVG patients secondary to CRVO and DR.Methods A series case observational study was carried out in Hiserve Hospital of Qingdao University from January 2009 to June 2012.Twenty-nine eyes of 27 patients with NVG caused by CRVO (10 eyes of 10 patients) and DR (19 eyes of 17 patients) were included.The history of underlying diseases,course of NVG,intraocular pressure(IOP),fundus findings and complications after treatment were analyzed and compared between the CRVO-derived NVG and DR-derived NVG.All patients underwent panretinal photocoagulation,improving microcirculation therapy,anti-glaucoma (drug or surgery) and causative disease treatment,and some of them received vitrectomy or/and cataract surgery.Two eyes from each group received intravitreal injection of ranibizumab.The follow-up time in both groups was (14.00±10.13) months and (17.89±12.52) months,respectively.Results The median time of underlying disease was 3.3 months (2 weeks to 6 months) in the CRVO patients and 11.1 months (4 to 36 mouths) in the DR patients,with a significant difference between them (Z =-2.40,P＜0.05).CRVO-derived NVG progress was much faster than that of DR-derived NVG.The number of the eyes with visual acuity improvement after treatment was 2 in the CRVO-derived NVG and 15 in the DR-derived NVG;while the number of the eyes with unchanged or worse visual acuity was 8 and 4 in the CRVO-derived NVG eyes and the DR-derived NVG eyes (x2 =9.38,P＜0.01).The difference of IOP in pre-and post-treatment was (37.00±9.91)mmHg in the CRVOderived NVG eyes and (8.92±12.05)mmHg in the DR-derived NVG eyes,showing a significant difference between them (t =6.30,P＜0.01).In the CRVO-derived NVG eyes,optic disc edema,retinal hemorrhage,and vein dilatation were seen in 6 eyes,and mild optic disc edema and retinal hemorrhage were observed in 4 eyes.After treatment,fundus could not be seen in 4 eyes,in other 2 eyes optic disc and retinal laser spots were unclearly observed.In addition,pale optic disc and retinal vessel occlusion appeared in 2 eyes,and silver wire-like arteries exhibited in 2 eyes.In pre-treated DR-derived NVG eyes,fundus could not be seen in 8 eyes and Ⅲ-Ⅳv stages of DR findings appeared in 11 eyes.After treatment,retinopathy was stabilized in 16 eyes of 15 cases.Advanced retinopathy(V-Ⅵ stages of DR findings) was revealed in 3 eyes of 3 cases.The incidence of the complication after treatment was 100.0％ in the CRVO-derived NVG eyes and 21.1％ in the DR-derived NVG eyes (x2=5.18,P＜0.05).Conclusions The clinical characteristics of NVG secondary to CRVO and DR are variable,an appropriate treatment option should be selected according to different features of NVG.

Objective To investigate the mechanism and suppression effect of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) on proliferation of megakaryocyte progenitors(CFU-Mk)in vitro.Methods Colony forming unit-assay was applied to observe the effect of HCMV-AD 169 strain on CFU-Mk of cord blood. The technique of PCR was used to demonstrate the existence of HCMV-AD 169 DNA in the colony cells of cultured CFU-Mk.Results 1.The number of CFU-Mk colonies in HCMV-infected groups decreased significantly compared with that of control group. The CFU-Mk formation was inhibited significantly after HCMV-AD 169 strain infection.The suppression effect showed a dose-dependent fashion: 46.7 % inhibition with 10 -1of HCMV, 29.7 % with 10 -2 and 14.5 % with 10 -3 in the CFU-Mix assay. The peak of CFU-Mk colonies (d16-18) was not significantly different between control group and experimental groups, but the duration of the CFU-Mk colonies in infected groups was significantly shorter than that in control group.2. HCMV-DNA was positively detected in the colony cells of viral infected group by PCR, while negative in control group.Conclusions HCMV-AD 169 strain may inhibit the differentiation and proliferation of CFU-Mk by infecting the hematopoietic progenitors. HCMV may cause the suppression of hematopoiesis by direct infection, which may be the main reason for HCMV infection associated with thrombocytopenia.

Objective To evaluate the application of non-bioartificial liver support system (ALSS) combined with liver transplantation(LT) in treating mid-or end-stage chronic severe hepati- tis.Methods ALSS plus liver transplantation were employed in treating 28 patients with mid-or end- stage chronic severe hepatitis.Clinical data from the patients before and after treatment were collect- ed.The survive rate of ALSS plus LT group were compared with that of medication group 99 cases and medication plus ALSS group 30 cases.The data were analyzed with t test and X~2 test.Results After 57 times ALSS treatment,the serum total bilirubin(TBil),prothromin time(PT),bile acid, blood urea nitrogen(BUN),creatnine(Cr) and ammonia of all the 28 patients got improved(P 0.05).The clinical symptoms and signs of the patients were ameliorated at median 3 d(1～153 d). All patients were bridged to liver transplantation successfully after median 20 d(1～153 d).The 3 and 6 months post-operation survival rate of ALSS plus LT group(71.4%,71.4%) were significantly higher than those in medication group(18.2%,11.1%) and medication plus ALSS group(36.7%, 26.6%)(P

Objective To investigate the clinical and pathologic features of pulmonary sclerosing he- mangioma (PSH).Methods With clinicopathologic date of 21 cases of PSH patients obtained,all speci- mens were stained by immunohistochemical method with a panel of antibodies including CK,synaptophysin, chromogranin,actin,calretinin,F-Ⅷ,CD_(34) and vimentin.Results PSH usually affects female patients.Age ranged from 26 to 70 years old.The tumor cells showed a mixture histological pattern,with the feature of pap- illary and the proliferation of interstitutial monocyte.Immunohistochemical staining revealed that surface of the papillary cells expressed CK,monocyte expressed synaptophysin.PSH should be distinguished from bronchi- oloalveolar carcinoma,carcinoid and inflammatory pseudotumor.Conclusion PSH is a rare and potential malignant behavior tumor,and is different from benign tumor.

OBJECTIVETo study gene expression profiling in human type I and II endometrial carcinoma.

METHODSSix Affymetrix human genome genechips were utilized to investigate the differences in gene expression profiles between type I and II endometrial carcinoma with bioinformatic analysis.

RESULTSMany genes were highly expressed in estrogen-dependent endometrial carcinoma, and some of them were involved in the metabolism and conversion of estrogen, while some others in estrogen regulation. CYP2C9, for instance, was involved in the conversion of estrogen sulfate to 16-hydroxy sulfate metabolite, DDC in estrogen-dependent pathogenesis of endometrial carcinoma possibly by DDC interaction with AR to enhance steroid receptor transcription.

CONCLUSIONHigh expression of these genes in estrogen-dependent endometrial carcinoma may provide insights into their roles in the pathogenesis and prognosis of this malignancy.

Objective To develop the humanized animal model for RA cartilage erosion,and study the mechanisms of its pathogenesis.Methods RA synovium and normal human cartilage under the kidney cap- sule of the SCID mice were engrafted,and were maintained for 4～16 weeks.In addition,mice underwent simi- lar surgery except the engraftment served as controls.After 4,8,12 or 16 weeks,the mice were killed and the grafts were harvested and the cartilage destruction was assessed histologically by haematoxylin/eosin-stained paraffin sections.Results Histological examination revealed the presence of infiltration of RA synovium cells into the cartilage after 4 weeks and the cartilage was destructed evidently.These studies demonstrated that the RA-SCID model maintained many of the phenotypic and functional features of RA.Conclusion This RA-SCID mouse is a useful animal model for study of the pathogenesis and the development of new drugs for RA patients.
