Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have gained increasing attention as a potential candidate in the development
of novel antimicrobial agent. Designing AMPs with enhanced antimicrobial activity while reducing the cell
toxicity level is desired especially against the antibiotic-resistant microbes. Various approaches towards the
design of AMPs have been described and physicochemical properties of AMPs represent the primary factors
determining the antimicrobial potency of AMPs. The most common parameters include net charge and
hydrophobicity, which greatly influence the antimicrobial activity of AMPs. Moreover, certain amino acids
would have critical importance in affecting the antimicrobial activity as well as cell cytotoxicity of AMPS. In this
review, net charge, hydrophobicity, and specific amino acid residues were discussed as factors contributing
to the antimicrobial activity of AMPs.

2.Staphylococcus Aureus Antibiotic Resistance In Atopic Eczema

Background: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing, pruritic inflammation of the skin which is often colonized by Staphylococcus aureus. Antibiotic resistance of S. aureus is a constant challenge for clinicians who manages atopic dermatitis.
Aim: To determine S. aureus antibiotic resistance pattern among patients with non-infected atopic dermatitis and its association with disease severity.
Methods: One hundred and seventy eight participants (89 AD patients and 89 controls) were recruited from Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). Participants were subjected to a questionnaire on demographics, personal and family medical conditions as well as antibiotic administration. AD severity were determined using Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD). Skin swab was taken from eczematous lesion in patients and from left forearm in controls. Antibiotic susceptibility towards methicillin, vancomycin, rifampicin, fusidic acid, erythromycin, gentamicin, clindamycin, sulphamethoxazole, cefuroxime and penicillin were determined using disk diffusion method. Results for antibiotic resistance were categorized as none, sensitive and resistant.
Results: Colonization of S. aureus in AD were significantly higher than control (p<0.001). Highest antibiotic resistance was reported for Penicillin (32/39, 82.1%), followed by Fusidic Acid (7/39, 17.9%) as well as Clindamycin and Erythromycin (3/39, 7.7% respectively). Two AD patient (5.1%) were resistant to Gentamicin. In addition, 1 AD patient (2.6%) was resistant towards Methicillin, Sulfamethoxazole and Cefuroxime respectively. No antibiotic resistance was reported for Vancomycin and Rifampicin among the AD patients.
Conclusion: High resistance were found for Penicillin and Fusidic acid. Their usage and prescription should be reduced to preserve its sensitivity.
3.Glycerol preserved bovine pericardium for abdominal wall reconstruction: experimental study in rat model.

The aim of this study was to evaluate bovine pericardium surgical patch in rat model. Bovine pericardial sacs collected from local abattoir were cleaned, disinfected and cut into pieces of 3 by 2.5cm and preserved in 99.5% glycerol. Full thickness abdominal wall defects of 3 by 2.5 cm were created in 30 adult male Sprague Dawley rats and repaired with glycerol preserved pieces. The rats were serially sacrificed in a group of six rats at 1,3,6,9 and 18 weeks post-surgical intervals for morphological and tensometeric study. Macroscopically, no mortality or postoperative surgical complications was encountered except slight adhesions between implanted grafts and some visceral organs in 10% of the rats. Microscopically no calcification or foreign body giant cell formation was found in the explanted grafts. The implanted grafts were replaced gradually with recipient tissue, which made mainly of dense collagenous bundles. The healing strength between the implanted grafts and the recipient abdominal wall was gradually increased with time. The results of this study showed that glycerol preserved bovine pericardium act as scaffold for transformation into living tissue without clinical complications such as that associated with prostheses.
