brain and fatty. The accumulation excretion ratios within 96 h were 70.16% in urine and only 1.35% in feces after iv administration in rats, while within 24 h was 3.46% in bile. Conclusion The results of pharmacokinetics of novel r-hirudin in rats given by iv determined by RA are different from those determined by TCA-RA, but the trends indicated by the two methods are the same; urine excretion is the major excretion pathway.

Chinese Journal of Pathophysiology 2000;0(07):-
AIM: In order to investigate the possible cumulative and chronic toxicity of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and provide more information on toxicity of PSP. METHODS: The sub-acute toxicity of PSP was evaluated in the rat. PSP was extracted from the seafood in market, and the toxicity of the extract was determined by mouse bioassay. The extracts in different toxicity were administrated to rats through gastrotube for 35 days. The biochemical and pathological changes in vital tissues in rats were examined by the detections of some function indexes in blood and urine and the observations under optical microscope during both the exposure period and the subsequent 10-day withdrawal term. RESULTS: No biochemical and pathological changes in tissues occurred for the control and low-dose group (4.6 ?g STX/kg), whereas some changes happened for the middle (9.2 ?g STX/kg) and high groups (18.4 ?g STX/kg). In experiment, some renal function indexes changed in the mid-dose group, and some of the cardiac, hepatic and renal functions indexes altered for the high dose group with some changes in weight of the thymus gland and spleen. What is more, the liver and kidney became indistinct with some inflammatory changes, and some muscles had ruptured for the 40% rats in high-dose group. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that long-term intake of PSP at a concentration, which doesn't exceed the threshold of standard, has some toxicity on rats, and that the toxicity of PSP has an accumulative effect. In a word, it is unsafe for us to eat frequently bivalve seafood polluted by PSP toxins.

Objective To evaluate the significance of sonographically detected thyroid calcification in the diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma. Methods Five hundred and twenty-two patients with thyroid disease, including 119 with thyroid cancer, were included in the study. Each patient underwent preoperative, highresolution sonography to evaluate the thyroid gland for the presence of calcification.Calcifications were classified:type Ⅰ,microcalcification;type Ⅱ,coarse calcification;type Ⅲ,annular or"egg-shell"calcification;typeⅣ,calcified nodules within a cyst. Results The incidence of calcification and microcalcification was significantly higher in thyroid cancer than in benign nodules(P<0.001).The appearance of microcalcifications was highly specific for malignancy with a sonographic specificity of 88%.The sensitivity was 60%,and the odds ratio(0R)was 11.28.The incidence of calcifications of type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ did not differ significantly between the benign and malignant groups.Calcifications of type Ⅳ were showed totally in benign groups.Patients younger than 45 years with calcified nodules constituted a highrisk group, with a OR of 11.33 versus 2.96 in patients older than 45 years with calcified nodules. In the group of solitary thyroid nodules, the incidence of cancer in the calcified nodules was higher than in the nodules without calcifications, with a OR of 20.48.Conclusions The detection of thyroid calcifications by sonography is diagnostically valuable, especially in eases involving a solitary nodule or a young person. The presence of calcifications in these cases should raise the suspicion of malignancy, especially microcalcification.
