OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Chinese herbal medicine 1023 Recipe in blocking cancer transformation of experimental oral precancerous lesion and its mechanism. METHODS: We treated the experimental oral precancerous lesion in hamster's cheek pouch using 1023 Recipe (consisting of Radix Astragali, Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, Rhizoma Chuanxiong and selenium-rich green tea) for 6 weeks, and observed its effect in blocking cancer transformation, detected 2 kinds of agglutinin receptors (receptors of wheat germ agglutinin and Ricinus communis agglutinin) in the mucosa of the hamster's cheek pouch. RESULTS: The rate of cancer transformation in 1023 Recipe treated group was lower than that in the control group without treatment (P<0.05). Agglutinin receptors in the two groups were different significantly. CONCLUSION: 1023 Recipe is effective in treating hyperplasia, and can prevent its cancer transformation. The mechanism may be that 1023 Recipe can induce precancerous lesions to differentiate into normal tissues.

Objective:To observe the clinic effect of wild apricot in Xinjiang Uighur nationality on fatty liver. Methods:With a western medicine group as the control group, the treatment courses of both two groups were 12 weeks. The trial group was given wild apricot decoction orally, the control group was given vitamin B,C and Glucurolactone tables. Results:Wild apricot exerted a significant effect in lowering the fat and treating the fatty liver without any toxic and side-effects.Conclusion:Wild apricot in Xinjiang Uighur nationality served as a vital treatment to fatty livers, which was worth being further promoted in the clinical therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza on renal morphology and renal function of rats with streptozotocin diabetes. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups, which were normal control group, untreated group and Salvia miltiorrhiza-treated group. Diabetic nephropathy was induced in rats of the last two groups by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin after unilateral nephrectomy. Then the rats in the normal control and untreated groups were fed with normal saline while those in the Salvia miltiorrhiza-treated group were fed Salvia miltiorrhiza preparation for 8 weeks. The glomerular volume (VG), kidney-to-body weight ratio (KW/BW), urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) and creatinine clearance (Ccr) were observed. The expression levels of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), fibronectin (FN) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) were detected by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) at the end of the experiment. RESULTS: UAER, Ccr, VG and KW/BW ratio were significantly higher in the untreated group than those in the normal control group (P<0.05). The expression levels of TGF-beta1, CTGF, PAI-1 and FN in the untreated group were also significantly higher as compared with those in the normal control group (P<0.05). UAER, Ccr, VG, KW/BW ratio and the levels of TGF-beta1, CTGF, PAI-1 and FN in the Salvia miltiorrhiza-treated group were obviously lower than those in the untreated group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Salvia miltiorrhiza can protect rats with streptozotocin diabetes from diabetic nephropathy by suppressing the over-expressions of TGF-beta1, CTGF, PAI-1 and FN in renal cortex.

Objective To assess the cardiovascular events after percutaneous transluminal coronary intervention (PCI) and the influence of fluvastatin on inflammation factors and prognosis of PCI patients. Methods One hundred and eighty-seven patients whose coronary stenosis ≥ 70% diagnosed through coronarography and underwent PCI from Jun.2005 to Feb.2008 were recruited in the current study. These patients were divided into two groups, the control group (n =91) was treated regularly and the treat group (n =96) was treated with additionally fluvastatin(40 mg/d).Fasting venous blood was obtained before and after medicine treatment,12,24 hours and two weeks after PCI.IL-18,IL-6 and TNF-α were measured through ELISA.Results Before medicine treatment, there were no difference of IL-18 ,IL-6 and TNF-α between the two groups( P > 0.05 ).After medicine treatment,IL-18,TNF-α and IL-6 decreased significantly compared to those before treatment in both groups ( P < 0.05 ),and these measurements decreased more in the treatment group ( P < 0.01 ).At the 12th hours after PCI,IL-18,TNF-αand IL-6 in the control group increased to (423.5 ± 298.7 ),( 316.1 ± 72.6 ) and (42.3 ± 10.1 ) ng/L,respectively,and arrived the peak at the 24th hour, which were significantly higher than those before medicine treatment( P < 0.01 ).In the treatment group, these measurements at the 12th and 24th hour after PCI were slightly higher than those before medicine treatment without significant difference ( P > 0.05 ).After 12 hours ofPCI,IL- 18,TNF -αand IL-6were (276.5 ± 189.4 ),( 175.3 ± 51.9) and ( 10.1 ± 8.1 ) ng/L,which were significantly lower than those in the control group(P < 0.01 ).Two weeks after PCI,IL-18,TNF-α and IL-6 in the treatment group were (137.0 ±34.2),(35.1 ± 21.6) and ( 8.7 ± 3.2 ) ng/L,which were significantly lower than before medicine treatment ( P <0.01 ).Conclusions PCI may aggravate the inflammation response of coronary artery.Statins may alleviate the inflammation response.IL-18,TNF-α and IL-6 are sensitive indices of early inflammation response after PCI,their changes might have prediction value for adverse cardiovascular events. Therefore these indices might be used as a target in the statins treatment in the primary prevention,as well as the evaluation of the effectiveness of PCI,statins and joint PCI and statins.

Objective To evaluate the cognitive function and its correlative factors in centenarians. Methods Forty-nine subjects in Zhongxiang city were included in this mass screening.Questionnaire was utilized to collect basic data, including age, gender, ability of daily life, depression, life habits, body mass index, and history of chronic diseases on all the subjects. And the mini-mental state examination(MMSE)was adopted to evaluate cognitive function of old people.T test and chi-square test were used to compare the difference in effectiveness of multiple different factors on cognitive function, while binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effects of multiple different factors on cognitive function. Results The mean score of the ability of different dimensions of cognitive function was (7.10 ± 2.71) in direction,(1.94 ±± 0.80) in memory,(0.61 ± 1.07) in attention and computation,(1.92 ± 0.86) in recall, and (4.73 ± 2.14) in speech, respectively, with total score of cognitive function of(16.30±6.02) in forty-nine centenarians.Normal cognitive function was found in 25 cases, and decreased cognitive function was found in 24 cases.Single factor logistic analysis indicated that body mass index(t=-3.399,P=0.001)and self-rating depression scale(t=-5.731,P<0.001) were lower in patients with normal cognitive function than in patients with declined cognitive function. And smoking patients were associated with higher rates of normal cognitive function than the non-smoking patients(87.5% vs.43.9%,x2 =5.091,P=0.028),and patients with normal hearing were associated with higher rate of normal cognitive function than patients with hearing loss(70.3 % vs.27.3 %,x2 =9.01,P=0.030).Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that depression index(β=-14.40,P=0.001) and body mass index(β=-0.424,P=0.015) were independent effective factors for cognitive function. Conclusions Improvement of the condition of depression and controlling the body mass index are hopeful for recovering or postponing their cognitive impairment in centenarians.
