There is rapid growth of pediatric surgery service in China in the recent years. A survey by the China Association �A gainst �Epi�lepsy underta�ken in �June ����� 2006���� on the ma�jor cities in different parts of the country showed a dramatic increase particularly in years 2004 and 2006. Surgery for temporal lobe epilepsy accounts for half of the operation. Surgery has an important role in the treatment of drug resistant pediatric epilepsy. With large population and vast geographical spread, it is important to further develop pediatric epilepsy surgery service in China

The earliest activities related to epilepsy surgery in China ma�� � y be tra�ce��d to the 19���50s an�� �� d 60s��. A�ter a lull during the cultural revolution, there was resurgence of epilepsy surgery from the 1980s, and rapid development from 2000. It is estimated that app�roximately 150- ���200 p hysi�cians �currentl�� � y pra�cti�ce epilepsy surgery in the country.�� In year 2��� 005, there were a total of 2,��500 �cases of e�pile�ps��y o�perate��d in whole of �China, close to half in Beijing, Tian�jin, �Shanghai, �Chongqing an��d Guang�zhou, an�� a �uarter in Beijing. There are three Chinese epilepsy surgery journals, 5 monographs on epilepsy surgery, and “��Epilepsy surgery” edite�� ��� ��� �� ��� ��� d by HO Luders has also �been translate��d into �Chinese��.

Objective To investigate the clinicopathologic features of cerebral hemisphere ulegyria in children with refractory epilepsy.Methods The clinical and pathologic findings were reviewed in 26 children who underwent resection of lesion and epileptogenic lobectomy operation in the Neurosurgery Department of Haidian Hospital,Haidian District of Peking University Third Hospital,from January 2011 to August 2015,and pathological diagnosis was cerebral hemisphere ulegyria.Results All children including 19 male and 7 female had medically intractable seizures.The mean ages of seizure onset and disease duration were 3.93 years old (from 10 days to 12 years old) and 5.42 years (from 1 month to 13 years),respectively.Eight cases had seizures because of perinatal period injury,and 12 cases developed seizures owing to infancy injury and others had no cause of disease.The mean operation age was 9.35 years old (5-14 years old).Fourteen cases underwent multilobar resection and the whole corpus callosum incision,and 12 cases were given modified anatomical cerebral hemisphere resection.The pathological diagnoses of brain tissues were cerebral hemisphere ulegyria with focal cortical dysplasia(FCD) Ⅲ d and dual pathology.Seizure outcome after the operation revealed that 19 cases (73.08％) had an Engel grade Ⅰ,3 cases (11.54％)had an Engel grade Ⅱ,2 cases (7.69％) had an Engel grade Ⅲ,and 2 cases (7.69％) missed the follow-up.Conclusions Acquired brain injury during the period of infant can cause ulegyria and cortical dysplasia,resulting in intractable epilepsy.The treatment of improved anatomical cerebral hemisphere resection and multilobar resection is significantly effective.

Objective:To isolate genes related to benflumetol resistance in the rodent malaria P.berghei K173 strain.Methods:The mRNA differential display technique was used to identify differentially expressed genes between drug-sensitive P.berghei K173 strain and benflumetol-resistant strain selected under benflumetol pressure.Northern blot was performed in order to determine the genes actually derived from maternal strains.Results:PCR reactions were prepared respectively with twenty-four pairs of primers in each of the strains.Thirty-three differentially displayed genes fragments were cloned and eight of them were sequenced. The eight sequences were novel ESTs and were submitted to GenBank. Homology searching revealed that clone CB52 was slightly homologous to P.falciparum cyclophilin gene. Hybridization confirmed that the gene fragment CB52 was upregulated in the benflumetol-resistant parasite strain, while downregulated in the chloroquine-resistant strain.Conclusions:CB52 fragment was involved in the benflumetol resistance in P.berghei and the genetic mechanisms of drug-resistance to benflumetol and chloroquine were different.

Objective Preterm birth is a live birth delivered before 37 weeks of gestation.Preterm birth rates have risen in recent years,and preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortali-ty worldwide.Both environmental and genetic factors likely play important roles in the development of pre-term birth.MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are 18 to 25 nucleotides,single stranded non-coding RNAs that regulate a wide range of biological processes in development and human disease.In this study,we have investigated the differential expression of hsa-miR-28-3p and ADAM12 in cord blood mononuclear cells of preterm birth and term birth.Methods The cord bloods were collected from the patients of Putuo District Institute of Materni-ty and Child Health.The preterm group(30 patients)was the patients with spontaneous preterm delivery,and the control group(30 patients)was the patients delivered normal infants at term.The expression levels of hsa-miR-28-3p and ADAM12 mRNA were directly generated by real-time PCR.Results The gestational age and birth weight of preterm group was(30.92 ±1.73)weeks and(1 646 ±357)g,and the control group was (39.73 ±0.58)weeks and(3 301 ±394)g.The hsa-miR-28-3p expression of preterm group(1.03 ±0.23) was significantly lower than that of control group(2.32 ±0.52)in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (P <0.01 );the ADAM12 mRNA expression of preterm group(0.037 8 ±0.005 6)was significantly higher than that of control group(0.027 6 ±0.003 9)(P <0.05);the hsa-miR-28-3p expression was significantly correlated with the ADAM12 mRNA expression(r =-0.634 1 ,P <0.01 ).Conclusion The lower hsa-miR-28-3p expression of cord blood mononuclear cells may up-regulate ADAM12 mRNA expression,and promotes the occurrence of spontaneous preterm birth.

Objective To collect the data of present basic constructive situation of intensive care units (ICUs) in second and tertiary grade hospitals in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and to provide a data base beneficial to the construction of ICUs in the whole region.Methods The information including basic situation of ICUs in a total of 49 second and tertiary grade hospitals as samples in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were investigated by questionnaire survey from December 2012 to April 2013. The contents of questionnaire chiefly included the basic situations of hospitals, ICU constructions, ICU human resources and allocation of equipments.Results Forty-nine questionnaires were sent out, and all of them gave answers, the recovery rate being 100%. In the whole region of Xinjiang, there were 49 second and tertiary grade hospitals with establishment of 66 various types of ICUs. ① Medical unit basic situation: the second grade A hospitals accounted for 59.2%, and the tertiary grade A hospitals, 34.7%. There was a larger proportion of local hospitals (67.3%); most of the hospitals had beds over 500 (57.14%), the designed hospital bed number was 41 403, and 35 442 beds were open up for service (85.60%). ② The ICU basic construction situation: the construction of ICUs concentrated mainly after the year 2000, from 2000 to 2010, a total of 37 units, and from 2010 to 2012, 12 units were constructed; when they opened to the public, the beds were relatively few, and the ICUs containing less than 10 beds occupied 79.00%. In the 66 ICUs surveyed, there were 43 general ICUs, accounting the largest proportion, followed by 7 emergency ICUs, and the least were 1 neurosurgery and 1 cardiac surgery ICU. In the 66 ICUs, all together 765 beds were prepared, but actually 808 beds were opening up to public; most of ICUs had 5 - 20 beds, accounting for 71% in all the ICUs. At present, in the whole Xinjiang region, the rate of beds in ICUs in various grades of hospitals opening to the outside for use accounted for more than 80% of which 56% ICUs were almost turning round fully. ③ ICU human resources situation: totally, there were 484 doctors in ICUs in the whole region, the ratio of full-time doctor to nurses was 1:3.50, the ratio for bed to physician 1:0.55 and the ratio for bed to nurse 1:0.92. The title of doctor was primarily resident, and the various title gradient levels were good. Most doctors graduated from a regular medical college, and the doctors having obtained a master degree were few. The physician professional backgrounds were mainly critical disease medicine, emergency medicine and respiratory medicine, the professional relevance being good; the chief way of ICU physicians to engage in advanced study of their professional training was in China, and generally they joined professional continuing education programs poorly, mostly joining once a year or non at all. The physicians who obtained the identification of Chinese critical care medicine specialist accounted only for 23.56%. ④ ICU equipment allocation situation: according to the requirements of ICU construction guidelines, the equipments must be allocated including bedside monitors (703 units), ventilators (516 units) and infusion pumps (702 units), occupying the highest proportion. In the optional equipments, there were enteral nutritional pump (89 stations), blood glucose monitoring device (57 units) and anti-decubitus mattresses (54 units), the proportion being the largest, bispectral index monitor (2 units), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO, 1 table) and gastric mucosal carbon dioxide tension pHi meter (0 unit), the proportion being the least or non at all.Conclusions In the whole Xinjiang region, the construction of ICUs is still at the developing stage, and needs to further strengthen the standardized construction. The human resources, equipments, etc. are not distributed in balance, and it is necessary to move forward the adjustment to benefit the development of ICUs in the whole region.

Objective To explore the changes of nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) in the serum and intestine mucosal and the treatment of ulcerative colitis(UC) with Tanshinone.Methods Seventy-nine patients with UC were randomly divided into the treatment group(group A,n=40) and the routine treatment group(group B,n=39).Patients in the group A were given Tanshionon and routine treatment.Patients in group B were given routine treatment.The levels of NO and SOD were measured in all patients before and after the treatment.The clinical symptom,enteroscopy,and hospital day were compared in the patients of the two groups.Twenty normal healthy controls(group C) were involved in the study.Results The NO level in the serum and intestine mucosal was significantly increased and the SOD level was significantly decreased in the patients with UC compared with those of the controls(all P

Objective To study the value of 18F-fluoro-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in diagnosis of patients suspected with gastric malignant tumors. Methods Ten women and fourteen men, with a mean age of (56±15) years (ranged from 28 to 83 years) suspected of gastric malignant tumors were enrolled from May 2007 to July 2007. According to the results of the first time endoscopy and biopsy, patients were divided into gastric cancer group (n=9) and suspected group(n= 15). 18F-FDG PET/CT whole body scan was performed in gastric cancer group for assistant operation and suspected group for further diagnosis. The results of PET/CT for suspected group were all confirmed by the endoscopy later. The final diagnosis was based on pathology and follow-up. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in diagnosis of gastric malignant tumors were analyzed, as well as the tumor staging before operation. Results The malignant tumor was found in 16 out of 24 patients who received 18F-FDG PET/CT scan, including 9 in gastric cancer group and 7 in suspected group. Sixteen tumors originated from stomach,and 1 infiltrated the liver, pancreas and omentum. Liver (1 case) and lung (1 case) metastases were found. Three lesions limited in intestine and 13 had positive lymph nodes. Two patiens in suspected group were not diagnosed by PET/CT, one was negative and the other, who suspected as gastric cancer by PET/CT, was pathologicaly confirmed as benign gastrointestinal stromal tumor. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in diagnosis of gastric malignant tumors were 16/17, 6/7, 16/17 and 6/7, respectively. Six patients of stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ were all detected. Conclusions 18F-FDG PET/CT whole body scan is not only a feasible, safe, noninvasive and promising diagnostic tool in detecting and differentiating gastric cancer from benign tumor, but also can assist the management of disease.

As a clean energy source and industrial material, hydrogen is very valuable. Electrolysis of water and chemical methods are well-known for producing hydrogen, however, all of these methods need additional energy supply. Besides highly energy cost, the chemical methods will lead to serious environment pollution. Compared with traditional methods, biological production of hydrogen has showed significant advantages. Bio-hydrogen can be produced by anaerobic and photosynthetic microorganisms during treatment of organic waste. It provides a low cost method for producing hydrogen gas, and a way of utilizing waste at the same time. This paper summarized the procedures of treatment of solid waste and the production of bio-hydrogen.
