OBJECTIVETo explore the impact of titanium implant on the growth and development of pediatric mandible after suffering from mandibular fracture and undergoing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) compared with those that underwent titanium plate removal postoperatively.
METHODSFifteen pediatric patients with mandibular fracture who underwent ORIF were included in this study. Eight patients did not undergo titanium implant removal postoperatively, whereas the other seven patients underwent the routine. The postoperative data of the pediatrics were collected for comparative analysis by taking the patients' frontal and lateral photos, recording the inter-incisor distance, and measuring the height of mandibular ramus, length of the mandibular body, and combined length of the mandible in three-dimensional reconstruction image.
RESULTSAll patients had acceptable facial contour, mouth opening, and occlusion, without obvious abnormalities. The radiography showed no significant difference between the bilateral mandibular lengths in the two groups of patients (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe titanium plants have no significant impact on the growth and development of pediatric mandible postoperatively; hence, the question on whether the titanium plates should be removed or not may be neglected. The removal operation may lead to secondary trauma; thus, performing titanium plate removal routinely is not recommended.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2015;(15):2346-2350
BACKGROUND:The design and communication of cosmetic operation is more refined than that of traumatic operation. Thus, more accurate data should be acquired and more precise three-dimensional models should be reconstructed.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the prospect of 3D laser scanner and matched graphics-processing software which acquire and analyze facial morphological data in the modern cosmetic surgery.
METHODS: We obtained the point clouds of the facial surface in two cases of facial soft tissue defects or dissatisfied facial appearance using a hand-held laser scanner to reconstruct a visualized facial model, which was used for measurement of facial profile, simulation of cosmetic operation and evaluation of the therapeutic effects.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:We simulated and designed upon the NURBS model before the operation primarily. Then the three-dimensional comparison was done between the simulate model and the postoperative model. Deviation analysis showed that the ratio of variation degree of the two models within 1 mm was more than 80%. It enables the rapid three-dimensional reconstruction of the facial surface by the combination of reverse engineering and laser scanning, thus providing accurate three-dimensional data for cosmetic design and quantitative evaluation of therapeutic effects in cosmetic surgery.

Objective To explore whether the mitochondrial toxicity markers of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)are of significance in monitoring mitochondrial toxicity during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).Methods Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA),mitochondrial thymidine kinase (TK2 )and p53-inducible ribonucleotide reductase small subunit 2 (p53R2 )were selected as mitochondrial toxicity markers. The expression changes of theses markers of PBMC in 22 AIDS patients were detected by real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR)at baseline,48 weeks and 96 weeks after initiation of the treatment. All the patients received stavudine/zidovudine and lamivudine as the mainstay of the HAART regimen. Independent-samples t test was used. Results The relative expression level of mtDNA in patients before HAART was 3.27 ± 0.94,and decreased to 2.16±0.85 at week 48 and 1 .66±0.66 at week 96, respectively. The differences were both significant compared with the level prior to the treatment (t =-3.90,P <0.01 and t =-6.29,P <0.01 ,respectively). The relative expression level of TK2 before HAART was 0.37 ±0.13,and increased to 1 .01 ±0.25 at week 48 and 2.13 ±0.61 at week 96 of the treatment. After pairwise comparisons of the three pairs of data (pre-HAART vs week 48 of the treatment,pre-HAART vs week 96 of the treatment and week 48 vs week 96 of the treatment),the differences were all significant (t = 10.77,8.00 and 3.56,respectively;all P < 0.01 ).The relative expression level of p53R2 was 0.86±0.39 before HAART,but gradually increased to 2.36 ±1 .14 and 7.73±0.65 ,respectively,at week 48 and week 96 of the treatment. The differences in p53R2 levels among three groups after pairwise comparison were all significant (t=3.27,12.26 and 13.25,respectively;all P < 0.01 ).Conclusions The expression levels of mtDNA,TK2 and p53R2 in PBMC could change significantly during HAART in AIDS patients, which might be used as indexes for monitoring mitochondrial toxicity.

Objective · To explore the biological characteristics of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and its effects on proliferation and differentiation of adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs). Methods · The whole blood was collected from the forelimb vein of healthy beagles to prepare the PRF membrane, which were observed with optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. ADSCs were collected from the inguinaladipose tissue and were isolated and cultured. Identification of multi-directionaldifferentiation potential was performed. ADSCs were assigned to the PRF group and the control group, the former was treated with PRF in vitro. Cell proliferation wasmeasured with CCK-8. Osteogenesis induction was performed for two groups and the expression of genes associated with osteogenesis, including osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN) and collagen I (Col- Ⅰ ), was measured with RT-PCR before induction and 4 and 7 days after induction. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activitywas measured 7 days after induction. Results · PRF is a milk white fibrin glue with elasticity and toughness. PRF can form loose and porous three dimensional network structure, which harbors lots of platelets and leucocytes. The cell proliferation activity was significantly higher in the PRF group than in the control group. After osteogenesis induction, the ALP activity and the mRNA levels of OCN, OPN, and Col- Ⅰ were significantly increased. Conclusion · PRF is a fibrin glue with three dimension network structure and contains lots of platelets, which can slowly release growth factors. PRF can promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of ADSCs.
