Today, the patient's needs for medical care and services have become diversified and medical information spreads widely and swiftly at that. In these circumstances, nurses are strongly expected to further develop their faculties of nursing and appropriately responding to the patient's emotional state. To nurture capable nurses, it is neccessary to establish an adequate training and performance evaluation system. In 2002, we had a chance to participate in the planning of “the Mie prefectural enterprise for continuous nurse education and appropriate nursing staff arrangement”. Based on this experience, we made a guideline for continuous nurse education, practice manual and an appraisal table for each rank.Meanwhile, The Mie Prefectural Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives for Health and Welfare, was studying a faculty appraisal system for all staffs. We started our nurse education program incorporating this system. Our nurse education program is made up of five ability-areas, that is, (1) nursing practice, (2) education to the lower class nurse and research, (3) human-relationship achievement, (4) nursing team management and (5) risk management. The outcome of this program was examined by the appraisal committee according to the improvement level in nursing abilities (including both skills and sensibility).

Based on this experience, we made a guideline for continuous nurse education, practice manual and an appraisal table for each rank.
Meanwhile, The Mie Prefectural Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives for Health and Welfare, was studying a faculty appraisal system for all staffs.

Objectives: This study evaluates the relationship between the various words expressing pain and the efficacy of opioid analgesics, in order to provide information on the appropriate selection of analgesic drugs for cancer pain relief. A new and simplified evaluation list for the assessment of pain, including the common words used to express pain, was developed accordingly. Methods: The words expressing pain were classified into three categories based on the Guidelines for Drug Therapy in Cancer Pain. These words were grouped into clusters according to the efficacy of opioid drugs, as expressed by the patients. On the basis of these results, an evaluation list was developed, and its validity was assessed by clinical pharmacists and cancer patients experiencing pain. Results: On the basis of the classification of the words, their relationship with opioid efficacy was summarized, and the results of the cluster analysis were found to be helpful for the development of a new pain evaluation list. Conclusion: Patients use various words to express their pain. By classifying and clustering these words according to the guidelines and the efficacy of opioid drugs, we proposed a practical pain evaluation list for appropriate selection of analgesic drugs in patients with cancer.

A 48-year-old woman started to have dizziness after experiencing an earthquake. Her clinical signs improved with the use of shimbuto that was prescribed based on her symptom of yin-syndrome and hypofunction. At the same time, there was a decrease in reading errors with her finger, in a vein authentication device. One of the common reading errors that the security system makes is due to a change in blood flow due to vasoconstriction caused by low temperature. It is speculated that the use of a warming formula increased peripheral blood circulation, which contributed to the improvement of vein authentication.

A 31-year-old woman started to have a yellowish-white scab with exfoliation on her lip after delivery. Her exfoliative cheilitis did not improve with kigikenchuto nor juzentaihoto for treating deficiency of vital energy and lack of blood. After she developed upset stomach, her prescription was changed to hochuekkito which supports the digestive system. Her symptom improved dramatically. The characteristic of exfoliative cheilitis consists of chronic inflammation of lips which is considered to be yang-syndrome, therefore hochuekkito was effective as it covers yang-syndrome as well as yin-syndrome. It is suggested that psychological factors play a role for a pathogenesis of exfoliative cheilitis. We consider that antistress effect of bupleurum root and sedative effect of citrus unshiu peel in hochuekkito might also be key factors.
