Objective To observe the efficacy of using a semiconductor laser combined with short-wave ultraviolet rays(UV)to treat patients with herpes zoster. Methods Forty-two patients with herpes zoster in the Department of Dermatology of our hospital were randomly divided into two groups, with 21 patients per group. Patients in the control group were treated with conventional dermatology drugs and short-wave UV,whereas patients in the observation group were treated with conventional dermatology drugs and a semiconductor laser combined with short-wave UV. Re-sults After treatment for 7 days, the efficacy rate in the control group was 80.95%,whereas that in the observation group was 95.24%. The analge-sia time, scab time, and scab removal time were significantly shorter in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05). The results of the pain assessment(visual analog scale )showed that the score of the observation group after treatment was significantly lower than that of the con-trol group(P<0.05). Conclusion Therapy involving a semiconductor laser combined with short-wave UV for patients with herpes zoster can be more effective than therapy with only a short-wave UV laser in promoting herpes healing, relieving neuralgia, and improving quality of life.

OBJECTIVE To study the status of the distribution and drug resistance of Enterococcus in hospital,in order to further provide the effective reference for rational use of antibacterial and the prevention of Enterococcus in clinical therapy. METHODS The drug sensitivity and resistance of 201 strains of Enterococcus were determined by MicroScan WalkAway40 automatic microorganism system. RESULTS The highest incidence rate of Enterococcus was E. faecium (48.8%),the second was E. faecalis (37.3%),and the others were E. gallinarum (13.9%). The drug resistance of E. faecium was much higher than that of E. faecalis. CONCLUSIONS The most of Enterococcus infection is due to E. faecium, and there is a lot of difference for drug resistance in the strains of Enterococcus. It is necessary to rationally use antibacterials on the basis of the drug resistance, infection sites and grade of infection.

BACKGROUND: There are more measurement data about knee joint at home and abroad, but few data about the northern China, especially Inner Mongolia region. Whether the posterior slope angle of tibial plateau in local area differs from that of Chinese or foreigners is rarely reported.OBJECTIVE: To measure the posterior slope angle of the medial tibial plateau in healthy Mongolia population, and to compare the differences of different measurement methods, so as to understand the anatomical characters of tibial plateau in Inner Mongolia region.METHODS: Sixty Mongolian volunteers were recruited, the 20 cm upper and under the knee joint were scanned bilaterally by GE64 row spiral CT, and the three-dimensional model of the knee was established on Mimics16.0 software, followed by processed through fairing, filling, separation and cutting. Afterwards, the angel between anterior cortical bone extension line of upper tibia (method A), tibia anatomical axis (method B), line perpendicular to the posterior cortical bone extension line of upper tibia (method C) and upper edge line of the tibial plateau was measured, respectively. The posterior slope angle of the medial tibial plateau (90°-measured angle) was obtained and compared.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The posterior slope angle of the medial tibial plateau measured by methods A, B and C was (11.16±3.39)°, (8.60±3.29)° and (5.30±4.40)°, respectively, and the former two were similar with those reported by Wang Ye-hua and Luo Ji-wei (P > 0.05). (2) There were significant differences in the posterior slope angle of the left and right medial tibial plateau among methods (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between left and right sides (P > 0.05). (3) There was no significant difference in the posterior slope angle of the left and right medial tibial plateau between genders (P > 0.05). (4) These results indicate that the Mongolian population show smaller posterior slope angle of the tibial plateau, but the angle exhibits great individual difference, thereafter, an individualize scheme should be developed before osteotomy.

BACKGROUND:Cauda equina syndrome often induces skin hypoesthesia in the perineal area, poor urine-stool control, and impairs male function. After peripheral nerve fiber injury, apoptosis of neurons appeared. This is associated with the nature of the injury, the types of neurons, the species of animals, the age, and the distance between neurons. OBJECTIVE:To explore the motor neuron apoptosis and expression of apoptosis-associated protein in the anterior horn of the spinal cord after acute cauda equina compression. METHODS:A total of 27 canines were randomly divided into three groups. In the compression and control groups, models of cauda equina compression were established. In the normal group, no models were established. Compression group received water sac compression for 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours, with three models in each group. In the control group, only water sac was implanted, but water was not injected. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase TdT-mediated biotin dUTP nick end-labeling assay was used to detect the apoptosis of neurons in the anterior horn of the spinal cord. Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3 protein expressions were measured by immunohistochemical staining (strept avidin-biotin complex). Gray values of positive cels of Bax, Bcl-2 and Caspase-3 protein expressions were detected using Qwin550Cw image colection and analysis system. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The apoptosis of motor neuron occurred in the compression groups. At 12 hours of compression, positive cels were detected, and the number of positive cels reached a peak at 72 hours. Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression was smal in the normal group. Caspase-3 protein expression was not detected in the normal and control groups. Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression was significantly increased at 8 hours, peaked at 72 hours and reduced to a normal level at 168 hours. The increased range of Bax protein expression was bigger than that of Bcl-2. Caspase-3 protein began to express at 12 hours, peaked at 72 hours and reduced to a low level at 168 hours. Bax and Caspase-3 protein expression peaked at 72 hours, and Bcl-2 protein expression was not obviously increased. These findings verified that after acute cauda equina compression, the apoptosis of neurons occurred in the anterior horn of the spinal cord. Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression showed an antagonistic action. In the Bax/Bcl-2 complex, Bax protein in a high expression promoted apoptosis, induced Caspase-3 protein expression, and neuronal apoptosis.

Objective To explore the efficacy and safety of moderate-dose of etoposide (VP16) with granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) for mobilization of peripheral blood stem/progenitor cells. Methods VP16 at 1.2 g/m2 was injected intravenously by six divided doses via a central vein, 2 times every 12 hours for 3 days in 31 patients with malignant lymphoma (30 non-Hodgkin lymphoma and 1 Hodgkin lymphoma). All patients received G-CSF 5 μg/kg were given twice daily subcutaneously from the day of the nadir of white blood cell (WBC) till the day before the last APBSC harvest. Results The mean time for the collection of stem cell was 12 days (10-15) following etoposide chemotherapy. The mean number of mononuclear cell (MNC) and CD+34 cells in collection were 7.8×108/kg (5.2-11.3×108) and 7.2×106/kg (5.3-13.1×106). respectively. 18 patients completed collection with a single apheresis, and 13 patients underwenttwice. All patients were recovered for haematopoiesis in following APBSCT. Median (range) time for the recovery of absolute neutrophil count (ANC)>0.5×109/L and platelet>20×109/L were+12 (+9-+18) days and +14 (+10-+21) days respectively. Slight adverse events coursed by the regimen could be tolerated. Conclusion VP16 at moderate dose with G-CSF is an effective and safe mobilizing regimen for autologous peripheral blood stem/progenitor cells in patients with malignant lymphoma. It was suggested to use extensively.

BACKGROUND: Whether the proximal tibial osteotomy in Mongolia populations has difference with other populations at home and abroad remains unclear.OBJECTIVE: To analyze the anatomical characters of the proximal tibial osteotomy in Mongolia populations in the northern region of China by measuring the relevant linear parameters.METHODS: Thirty-eight healthy Mongolia populations were selected, and their bilateral knee joints were scanned by CT.The original data were exported in DICOM format. Mimics software was used to reconstruct the knee three-dimensional model. The tibial data stored in STL format were imported into 3-matic software, showing the medial surface of the tibia, and 6 mm below the medial tibial plateau maintaining 7° posterior slop was subjected to total hip arthroplasty osteotomy.Subsequently, the relevant parameters were measured.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The left tibia transverse diameter was (79.99±3.70) mm, and the right was (80.25±4.01) mm. The left anteroposterior diameter was (52.27±3.07) mm, and the right was (51.75±2.40) mm. The anteroposterior diameter of medial tibia was (55.40±2.00) mm (left), and (56.67±2.47) mm (right); the lateral was (49.84±2.78) mm (left), and (49.58±2.80) mm (right). (2) In Mongolian populations, the linear parameters showed no significant differences between two sides of the proximal tibial osteotomy (P > 0.05). The anteroposterior diameter of medial tibia was longer than that of lateral one (P > 0.05). The linear parameters of the proximal tibial osteotomy in male were significantly larger than those in female (P < 0.05). There were differences in the linear parameters of the proximal tibial osteotomy between Mongolian populations and other populations. (3)These results indicate that there are significant differences in the anatomical morphology of the tibial plateau between western and eastern countries.Besides, the geometric parameters of the tibial plateau may be different in different ethnic groups and regions. It is necessary to use the digital orthopedic technique to investigate and analyze the large sample data of different ethnic groups in different regions.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2012;37(1):1-5
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) belong to TGF-β superfamily and are a group of important cytokines involved in cell differentiation, proliferation and embryonic development. Multiple BMPs play important roles in several functions of vertebrates. Signaling pathway of BMPs is known to be mediated by Smad proteins, which include 8 members while Smad1, Smad5 and Smad8 are involved in BMPs signal transduction while Smad2 and Smad3 are mediated TGF-β signal transduction. Although several BMPs such as BMP4 and BMP9 have been documented in the liver, BMP13 has not been examined in the liver. BMP13 also known as growth differentiation factor (GDF)-6 or cartilage-derived morphogenetic protein (CDMP)-2 is one of the BMPs family members. Function of BMP13 has been investigated in bone and tendon repair. It can stimulate tendon-like cell proliferation. However, our recent findings revealed that there was expression of BMP13 in the liver and its expression was modulated during metabolic disorders. The current article is to understand biological function of BMP13 especially in the liver.
