Objective:To study the mathematical relation between the measurements of root canal curvature obtained by Schneider's method(?_S) and Weine's method(?_W).Methods:The axis of a curved root canal was simplified by an arc (whose radius was r and central angle ?) and 2 tangent line segments (whose lengths were l_1 and l_2),the relation of ?_S and ?_W was studied with the help of mathematical analysis according to the different ways of determining the measured angles on the simplified axis. The graphs of the function were analysed. Results:The following formulas were proved:(1)tan?_S=(1-cos?_W+ ksin?_W)/(sin?_W+kcos?_W),k=l_2/r;(2)?_W/2≦?_S≦?_W.If ?_W was in the interval [0,?],a proximate linear correlation existed between ?_S and ?_W.Conclusion:There is a complex function between the 2 angles(?_S and ?_W) measured by Schneider's method and Weine's method, the ratio of the length of the apical straight part to the radius of the canal curvature is an important factor determining the different values of ?_S and ?_W.

BACKGROUND:Chondrocytes may dedifferentiate when they are cultured in vitro, and the capacity of synthetizing glycosaminoglycan (GAG)is also reduced, how to delay the dedifferentiation of chondrocytes is a crucial topic in the field of tissue engineering.OBJECTIVE:To observe the performance of chondrocytes synthetizing GAG at different inoculum densities.DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:A controlled cellular experiment was performed at the laboratory of Department of Orthopaedics in the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University between January 2007 and May 2007.MATERIALS:Five New Zealand rabbits of one month old were used in this study.METHODS:Articular chondrocytes were isolated from both knees and digested using 0.4% pronase enzyme and 0.025% Ⅱ type collagenase. The chondrocytes harvested from the same rabbit were divided into two sets, one was seeded at a constant density of 2×104/cm2 in primary and subculture, the other was cultured at a reduced density of 2×103/cm2 following cellular adhesion.Cellular morphology and proliferation were observed under inverted microscope. The culture media were renewed after the primary cells and passage 1 cells were confluent.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:GAG concentration was determined using the modified precipitation method with Alcian blue at 12,24,36,48 and 60 hours following the renewal of culture media.RESULTS:Articular chondrocytes in the primary high-density culture group were polygonal with clear boundaries, they have shown to form colony at 3-4 days.Cells around colonies were more slender than those in the center of colonies, shaping as long polygon. There was no obvious change observed in the morphology of passage 1 cells. In the low-density culture group, cells scattered at early stage and formed colonies at 7 days, cellular morphology showed no significant differences in comparison with high-density culture group. The time of primary cells becoming confluent in the low-density culture group was prolonged compared with high-density culture group. The GAG concentration in supernatants in the primary cells of low-density culture group was significantly lower than that in primary cells and passage 1 cells of high-density culture group (P<0.001,P<0.05).The GAG concentration showed a greater difference along with the prolonging of culture time.CONCLUSION:High-density culture is better then low-density culture to enhance the performance of chondrocytes synthetizing GAG and to retard the velocity of chondrocytes dedifferentiation, which suggests high-density culture contributes to maintain the chondrocytes phenotype and can be considered as a good way of plate culture.

Objective:To analyze the wall thickness of C-shaped canals in permanent mandibular second molars.Methods:40 ex-tracted permanent mandibular second molars with C-shaped root were collected from native Chinese and were scanned by micro-CT scan-ner.The specimens were reconstructed three-dimensionally by software Mimics 10.01.The roots were sliced from cemento-enamel junc-tion (CEJ)to apex with 1 mm intervals. The cross-sectional root canal configurations were classified into 5 types according to the Fan's Classification. The minimum buccal wall thickness (MBWT),minimum lingual wall thickness(MLWT)and their locations,as well as the wall thickness at the mesial and distal reference sites were detected.Two-way ANOVA and post hoc LSD-t tests were used to com-pare the mean thickness at 4 sides. Results:Among 370 cross-sections of 40 C-shaped roots,C1,C2 and C3 canals were observed on 126(34.1%),46 (12.4%)and 160 (43.2%)sections respectively.Except at the 10 mm level, the mean MLWT was always lower than MBWT;and the MLWT and MBWT were always lower than the wall thickness at the mesial and distal reference sites. The differ-ence was statistically significant (P <0.05)along the root length above the 12 mm level. The MBWT of the C2 and C3 canals was more likely located at the mesial region, and the MBWT of the C1 and the MLWT of C1,C2 and C3 was more frequently located at the center region. Conclusion:The lingual wall of C-shaped canal in mandibualr second molars was the thinnest zone among four sides, and care should be taken during root canal instrumentation and post space preparation to avoid perforation.

Objective To study the effects of preoperative autologous blood donation on involution of uterus of puerpera under cesarean section after delivery. Methods Non-autologous blood donation was applied as control group. Height of uterus declining, pain of uterine contraction, amount of lochia, ending time of lochia and involution of uterus under ul-trasound B after delivery were compared between both groups. Results Heigh of uterus, score of uterine contraction pain, mean ending time of lochia, the sum of three dimensions of uterus in the third day and the seventh day and inci-dence of endometrial cavity fluid in the preoperative autologous blood donation group were lower than those in the non-autologous blood donation group. Mean good rate of involution of uterus in 42 days after delivery was higher than that in the non-autologous blood donation group. All the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Pre-operative autologous blood donation is able to promote the involution of uterus after delivery, alleviate postpartum con-traction pain and significantly shorten lochia time, which is worthy of promotion.
