A series of 17 human specimens including different ages of embryos, fetuses and adults were selected for the study of developmental changes ofthe digestive epithelium ranging from the esophagus to the large intestine. Each embryo was sectioned in series and stained with H.E.,while the partsof the digestive tract of the fetus and adult were obtained segmentally andstained with H.E.,I.H.,as well as Mallory's triple staining method.Com-plete sets of sheep and pig embryo were also utilized in comparison with theearly stage of human embryo. It was found that the development of the mucous folds, villi and glands, the morphological changes of the epithelium and the differentiation of thecytoarchitecture of the epithelial cells consecutively started from the fetalmonth.Consequently, the morphological constitution of the epithelial cells ofthe digestive tract of the adult was found to be specifically differentiatedfrom that of the embryonic condition.A great variation of the differentiation of the esophageal epithelium wasobserved during the fetal period.Patches of the different kinds of epithe-lium were intermingled in the same section of the prepared slides. The oc-curence of the various kinds of epithelium is considered as an instability ofthe life span, and the typical form of the stratified squamous epitheliumwould not make its appearance until the full-term stage. No complete occlusion was observed in the esophagus and small intestineduring the embryonic period as remarked by some authors. This may be as-cribed to the individual deviation of the specimens during embryonic develop-ment.A comparative study of the digestive tracts of animals of different feedinghabits, such as monkey, rabbit, bat, weasel and domestic cat, were also madein the course of the present study in order to elucidate their histologicaldifferences.Segments of different parts of the digestive tract obtained fromeach animal were fixed and sectioned by routine procedure.Sections of eachsegment of the specimens were specifically stained with H.E.,I.H.,Mallory'striple staining method,Masson's method for argentaftin cells, and phosphc-tungstic acid and hematoxylin method for Paneth's cells. In general the morphological constitutions of the epithelium of the di-gestive tract of the corresponding parts were found to be fundamentallysimilar in the following aspects:the presence of the stratified squamousepithelium of the esophagus, the simple columnar epithelium of the stomach and intestine, the villi of the intestine, the intestinal glands and the gobletcells of the small and large intestines, and the striated border of the smallintestine, etc. The following differences were noted among the specimens studied;theparietal cells were comparatively few in number in the fundus of the monkey'sstomach and the goblet cells were absent in the rabbit's large intestine.Paneth's cells were quite common in the fundus of the intestinal glandsof man,cat and bat;but they were not found in the monkey, rabbit andweasel. The argentaffin cells were often found in scattered manner in theepithelium of the intestinal gland of the small and large intestines in man,bat and weasel, and they were also found in the bottom of the gastric glandin the monkey, but were absent in the entire digestive tract of the rabbit.

Objective To evaluate the influences of femoral rotation on dynamic alignment of the lower extremity in TKA by computer assisted surgical technology. Methods From July 2013 to August 2013,76 consecutive patients with knee osteoarthritis undergone primary-single TKA in our hospital were enrolled, including 46 males and 30 females, aged from 64 to 78 years (average,71 years). All surgeries were completed by the same professional doctor. The PFC (fixed-bearing posterior stabilized) Sigma rotating-platform was selected for all patients, and computer navigation system (Stryker(R) Navigation System Ⅱ-Cart (Stryker corporation,Kalamazoo,Michigan,USA) was used.External rotation osteotomy of the distal femur during TKA was completed according to the pre-operative external rotation angle (ERA),intraoperative transepicondylar axis (TEA) and anteroposterior (AP) line.Passive dynamic alignment of the lower extremity during knee flexion was recorded. The variation trend of hip-knee-ankle (HKA) alignment and the influences of femoral external rotation osteotomy were analysed. Results ERA calculated by the computer navigation system according to Whiteside line,TEA and the mean of Whiteside line and TEA was 5.54°±2.86°,5.21°±2.60° and 5.34°±2.38°.Compared with the ERA measured by CT,no method was better than the other two.Postoperative deviation of HKA alignment from 0° to 90° flexion was associated with the rotational alignment of the femoral component.Trend of HKA alignment during knee flexion tended to be varus, valgus or neutral according to different angles of external rotation osteotomy of the distal femur. Conclusion The HKA alignment changes during the knee flexions.External rotation osteotomy of the distal femur played a crucial role in determining dynamic HKA alignment in TKA.
4.Biomechanical Research Progress on Oral Masticatory Mucosa
Journal of Medical Biomechanics 2022;37(4):E771-E776
According to its location and function, the oral mucosa can be divided into masticatory mucosa, coated mucosa and special mucosa. Oral masticatory mucosa, including hard palate and gingival mucosa, bears the chewing pressure and friction, and plays an important role in denture restoration. The study on biomechanics of oral masticatory mucosa is helpful to better understand and solve clinical problems related to oral masticatory mucosa. In this review, the progress of biomechanical researches on oral masticatory mucosa was summaried from three aspects: anatomical and physiological analysis, biomechanical characteristics (stress-strain curve, Poisson’s ratio, friction coefficient) and clinical significance, in order to provide further theoretical basis for the researches in oral prosthodontics-related areas.

All residents aged 40 years or more in Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan were involved in an annual medical check-up between 1987 and 1988. The cohort was followed and death certificates from cancers were confirmed prospectively. During follow-up to December 31st, 1994, 100 deaths (28 gastric, 17 lung and 55 other cancers) from cancers occurred, and these subjects were included in this study as the case group. Subjects in the control group, matched for gender and age with the cases, were selected randomly from participants whose serum samples had been stocked during annual medical check-up. The concentration of serum thiocyanate in all (79.8 μmol/l), gastric (86.7 μmol/l) and lung (90.0 μmol/l) cancer patients were significantly higher than that of relevant controls (64.3 μmol/l, 59.0 μmol/l and 61.0 μmol/l, respectively; and p<0.001, p<0.001 and p<0.05, respectively). After adjusting for BMI, blood pressure and total serum cholesterol, the results of multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of all cancers (OR=3.40, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.67−6.96, p<0.01), gastric cancer (OR=7.98, 95% CI: 1.91−33.34, p<0.05) and lung cancer (OR=8.83, 95% CI: 1.19−65.65, p<0.05) were elevated significantly with logarithm transformed values of serum thiocyanate increased. The present findings suggested that in epidemiological studies confirmation of smoking status with biomarkers such as serum thiocyanate may be important, although considering the small sample size, a relatively weaker risk to interested factors rather than the strong relationship between smoking and cancer was noted.

Objective To understand genetic distribution, drug resistance, molecular typing and the epidemiological relativeness between strains of the Shigella boydii virulence. Methods Nine Shigella boydii strains were isolated form stool samples of patients with diarrhea from the Enteric Disease Clinic of the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University in June-October 2015. The strains were identified by biochemical test and serum agglutination test. Antibiotics susceptibility test was carried out using the Kirby-Bauer method. Polymerase chain reaction was used for detecting virulence genes. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) technique were used to determine the epidemiological relationship between nine Shigella boydii strains. Results There were three subtypes in nine isolated Shigella boydii samples, including one, three and five isolates inⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅳsubtypes respectively. All of the 9 isolates were multi-drug resistant. The resistant rate of these strains for ampicillin was 100%(9/9), and then the resistant rates of these strains for ceftazidime, streptomycin, gentamicin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, norfloxacin and levofloxacin were 1/9, 4/9, 4/9, 4/9, 5/9, 5/9, 6/9, 6/9 and 6/9, respectively. All of these strains were sensitive to amikacin, cefperazone-sulbactam and imipenem. The ipaH was carried by all the testing strains, and none of the strains carried the sen, set1A, set1B, ial, virA, icsA and SigA. The detective rates of pic, sepA and sat were 4/9, 5/9 and 7/9 strains, respectively. Nine shigella boydii strains were divided into 8 PFGE types. The similarity between the spectrums of PFGE was 63.21%-100%. Multilocus sequence typing showed that six isolates were belonged to ST648, two isolates were ST131 and one isolate was ST10. Conclusion Nine isolates of Shigella boydii (divided into three subtyping) isolated from our hospital are multi-drug resistant and they have distant relationships, belonging to the dissemination of case.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the influences of the distal femoral cut, the anterior and posterior femoral cuts, the proximal tibial cut on the dynamic alignment of the lower extremity in total knee arthroplasty.
METHODSBased on the three-dimensional geometric model, imitating the flexion movement of the knee without axial rotation after total knee arthroplasty, the influence of each of the three bone cuts on the dynamic alignment was analyzed with the assumption of standard bone cuts of the other two and equality of the medial and lateral soft tissue balancing. The dynamic alignment was defined as the angle between the mechanical axis of the tibia and the sagittal plane of the body when the knee was in any angle of flexion. With two of the three major bone cuts standard, the track of the tibial movement was established when the other one bone cut deviated from the ideal section of angle A. Based on the principle of geometry, the mathematical formula were established to present the influences of three bone cuts on the dynamic alignment of the lower extremity.
RESULTSAll of the three kinds of bone cuts in total knee arthroplasty influenced the dynamic alignment of the lower extremity not just in one static position, but during the whole range of motion. At the θ angle of knee flexion, the alignment of the lower extremity was arcsin(cosθsinA) when the varus/valgus femoral component alignment was A; the alignment of the lower extremity was arcsin(sinθsinA) when the rotational femoral component alignment was A; the alignment of the lower extremity was A when the varus/valgus tibial component alignment was A.
CONCLUSIONThe influences of the distal femoral cut, the anterior and posterior femoral cuts, the proximal tibial cut on the dynamic alignment of the lower extremity in total knee arthroplasty are dynamically changed during the flexion movement of the knee.
