Objective To evaluate the short-term efficacy and adverse effects of capecitabine as adjuvant chemotherapy of gastric cancer after resection in aged patients. Methods Sixty aged patients with gastric cancer (Ⅱ-Ⅲstage) after resection were randomized to two groups: the high dose group,in which 30 patients were treated least 6 therapeutic cycles (3 weeks for 1 cycle). Efficacy and adverse effects were assessed after 2 cycles. Results Two years' survival was 80% (24/30) in the high dose group and 77% (23/30) in the low dose group (χ2=0.54,P=0.45). The recurrence-free survival time was 19.2 months and 19.0 months respectively (χ2=0.82,P=0.36). Patients in the high dose group experienced more significant nausea/vomiting (Ⅰ-Ⅱ grade) than patients in the low dose group (χ2 = 9.82,P=0.02). However,there was no significant difference on grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ nausea/vomi-ting between the 2 groups(χ2=0.34,P=0.71). The incidence of grade Ⅰ-Ⅳ mucositis,hyperbilirubinemia and hand-foot syndrome (HFS) in the high dose group were higher than in the low dose group( P=0. 04,0. 02 and 0.04,respectively). There was no difference on weakness,lack of appetite and neutropenia between the two groups. in aged patients with similar efficacy and better tolerance of adverse effects compared to capeeitabine [2500 mg/

Objective: To evaluate the curative effect of auricular point sticking therapy on vertebral artery type of cervical spondylosis. Methods: With the single-blind randomized controlled trial design, the treatment group of 42 cases was treated by auricular point sticking therapy and the control group of 38 cases was treated with herbal medication. Fifteen days made up a treatment course, and the total treatment period should be no more than 2 course of treatment. Results and Conclusion: The total effective rate was 97.6% in treatment group and 73.7% in control group; there was a statistically significant difference between two groups, and the treatment group is marked superior to control group.

Keratoconus is a relatively common, bilateral, non-inflammatory corneal ectasia characterized by thinning and scarring of the central portion of the cornea,seriously destroyed the vision. Laboratory studies suggest a role for degradative enzymes and proteinase inhibitors and a possible role for the interleukin-1 system in its pathogenesis, but these roles need to be more clearly defined. It has well-described clinical signs, but early forms of the disease may go undetected unless the anterior corneal topography is studied. Contact lenses are the most common treatment modality. When contact lenses fail, corneal transplant is the best and most successful surgical option.

Objective To observe and analyze the four changes of plasma D- dimer and coagulation in pregnant women at different stages of pregnancy, and to explore the value of the test. Methods The subjects of this study were 120 pregnant women who underwent routine physical examination in our hospital, according to different stages of pregnancy (early pregnancy, middle pregnancy, late pregnancy, and before delivery) Four D- dimer and four blood coagulation tests were performed in pregnant women, and the results were observed and compared. Results During the pregnancy, D- dimer has increase trend (P<0.05); early in pregnancy, pregnancy and late pregnancy, PT has shortened(P<0.05); pregnancy, APTT has shortened (P<0.05), at the end of pregnancy and parturient period, showing a significant shortening (P<0.05); phenomenon in early pregnancy to mid pregnancy stage, FIB increased significantly (P<0.05), and at the end of pregnancy to perinatal period, with a sharp increase (P<0.05). Conclusion It is of great significance to perform dynamic monitoring of of plasma D- dimer and coagulation four indices in pregnant women during pregnancy.

[Objective]To report the records of 185 patients in whom severe scoliosis had been treated with preoperative halo-pelvic distraction and following total spine osteotomy and internal fixation.[Method]Preoperative halo-pelvic distraction was applied to all patients to reduce the severity of curvatures and make the following treatment possible.Then total spine osteotomy and internal fixation were performed to rectify the remained deformity of the spine.Halo-pelvic distraction was maintained during the operation and postoperatively to limit the mobilization of the patients.At one day after the operation,the patients were able to get out of bed,stand up and move around,making nursing care more convenient.[Result]Between 1983 and 2003,a total of 185 cases of severe scoliosis were treated by this approach and an average correction rate of 70.32% was achieved.Complete bone fusions were achieved at the cut ends of thc bone.The average loss of correction rate was less than 5 degrees.In the late stage of postoperative duration,rod release occurred in four cases and was resolved by second surgical intervention,showing no adverse effect on the clinical outcome.At one year postoperative infective complication occurred in one case and the patient fully recovered after the removal of the inserted device.X-ray examination confirmed good healing of the hone grafts.Root pain occurred in one case and the patient gradually recovered without any medical intervention.None of the rest patients had evidence of spinal cord or nervous system complications.[Conclusion]Halo-pelvic distraction instrumenation,in combination with total spine osteotomy,is an effective treatment modality for severe spinal curvatures.Halo-pelvic distraction can facilitate the operative procedure for those cases that can not be cured by application of single instrumentation or have difficulty in the insertion of the internal fixation device.The combined total spine osteotomy can further correct the spinal curves,reduce the burden of the fixafion device and avoid the occurrence of release or break down of the rods,eventually cure the severe scoliosis effectively.

Objective To assess the expression patterns of apoptosis-related genes in human pancreatic cancer cells (Patu-8988)induced by Kanglaite (KLT), a novel anti-cancer botanical product. Methods The apoptosis of Patu-8988 cells was determined by flow cytometry with Annexin V-FITC and propidium iodide staining. A human apoptosis microarray containing 96 cDNA fragments was used to detect gene expressions, and followed by Western blot analysis to confirm changes in expression of selected gene products. Results KLT induced apoptosis of Patu-8988 cells in a time-dependent manner. cDNA microarray analysis identified 5 down-regulated genes and 12 up-regulated genes (more than three fold) in the first 24 h as a consequence of treatment. Western blot performed for P53, Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3 were consistent with the microarray results. The enhanced activity of Caspases-3 was evidently verified by the cleavage of the 89?103 form of poly ADP-ribose polymerase. Conclusion KLT could alter the expression profile of apoptosis- related genes in human pancreatic Patu-8988 cancer cells, which provides valuable insight into the tentative signaling pathways mediating the outcome of KLT-induced apoptosis.
