Comparative effectiveness research (CER) has gained more and more popularity, which brought great response in the USA and other developed Western countries. There is no doubt that CER is a new idea and a milestone in health care research. CER is also known as "patient-centered outcomes research", which means patient is the core element in the whole system of CER. Chinese medicine could make new achievements and further development by introducing CER into clinical research. This article mainly introduced the background, features and contents of CER and summarized how to conduct CER in Chinese medicine by referring to some published literature in order to enlighten Chinese medicine researchers.

Chinese Journal of General Surgery 2001;0(07):-
Objective To investigate an effective method for detecting lymphatic micrometastasis in gastric carcinoma. Methods RT-PCR technique was applied to examine MMP-7 mRNA in 94 lymph nodes in 24 cases of gastric carcinoma. Results Routine pathological method detected lymphatic metastasis in 54 lymph nodes, while MMP-7 mRNA RT-PCR showed positive in 78 lymph nodes. When re-examination for the 28 negative lymph nodes in the initial pathological examination and positive in RT-PCR, 8 lymph nodes with metastasis were found by routine pathological method.2 of 5 patients whose lymph nodes were negitive in pathological examination, but positive in MMP-7mRNA were found liver metastasis 16 and 22 months after radical gastrectomy. Conclusions MMP-7 mRNA RT-PCR is a sensitive method for detecting lymphatic micrometastasis for patients with gastric carcinoma. It is a great help for eluvating the postoperative prognosis and supplemental treatmemt.

Orthopedic Journal of China 2008;16(1):34-38
[Objective ] To investigate the improvement of the surgical treatment effect on cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia by performing modified surgeries since 2004. [Method ] Twenty-three cases of severe cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia were operated, 14 male, 9 female; age 3 ~ 12 years; the average age of 5.7 years; their main symptoms were unable to stand and walk independently, with severe hypermyotonia of both lower extremities, and a scissoring type of gait when standing, hip and knee flexing contracture, ankle and foot equinovarus. Physical examination: there was hypermyotonia of the iliopsoas, adductor musculus, hamstrings, triceps surae, anterior and posterior tibial muscle, flexor pollicis longus and flexor digitorum longus. The muscle tone was 3 ~4 grade according to Ashworth criterion. Treatment: The intramuscular tenotomy, fascial division or sliding elongation were performed, to lengthen the tendon of the joint flexion contracture, the lateral half of anterior tibial muscle tendon was transferred laterally to balance the muscle force at the foot. Finally, both lower extremities were fixed by a new designed external frame, to straigthen the articular genu, keep both ankles and feet in neutral position, both lower extremities abducting 30°, and to correct all joint deformities. Family rehabilitation programs started after the external frame was removed 6 weeks later. [Result] All cases were followed up in 1 ~3 years with the average 2. 2 years. The results were evaluated as excellent, good and ineffective, according to correction of the joint deformities, the ability to stand and walk, and parent's satisfaction to the treatment. Of them 21 cases were excellent, 2 cases good, and no ineffective case. [ Conclusion ] For the severe cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia in children, reasonable release of the tight tendons of the multi-joint flexion contracture, balance of muscle force at the foot, correction of all deformities and fixation of the lower extremities with the new external frame, and long term of family rehabilitation after the surgery, are more effective treatment.

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 2010;26(3):294-297
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain, which causes learning and memory to become seriously impaired. AD not only influences the patient's quality of life, but also places a great burden on caregivers. With the increasing of aging population, the pressures can be wide-ranging, involving social, psychological, physical, and economic elements of the caregivers' life. The cause and progression of Alzheimer's disease are not well understood. Currently used treatments include pharmaceutical and psychosocial ones, each offering a small symptomatic benefit. Actually, there are still no available medicines and treatments to delay the progression of the disease. Therefore, the development of a new ideal medicine to treat AD patients becomes the first priority. In recent years, most researchers have turned to natural products, hoping to find a drug candidate to cure AD patient. Baicalein, a traditional Chinese medicine extracted from Scutellaria Baicalensis (Chinese herb), has been demonstrated holding the properties of anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis, anti-oxidant, and improving learning and memory of human brain. Baicalein is becoming a potential ideal medicine for treating AD patient.

Journal of Integrative Medicine 2006;4(4):335-8
In the opinion of dialectical materialism, concept is developing with the deepening and broadening of human being's mind. The developing process of syndrome concept in traditional Chinese medicine also takes the same way. In the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the connotation of syndrome concept was defined and the embryonic form of syndrome differentiation of zang-fu viscera was formed. In the Song, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, the development of syndrome concept embodied in optimizing the theoretical research based on clinical practice and experiences according to many medical masters in different denominations. The syndrome differentiation of eight principles was established to standardize and perfect the principles of syndrome differentiation in the Qing Dynasty. Modern research of syndrome concept is manifested in objectifying the process of research of syndrome and diseases in different levels and aspects by use of advanced scientific technology.
