Objective To study the correlation between storage time and the content of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in Corni Fructus because of the color change caused by storage time. Methods Corni Fructus samples of different storage time with 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 years were collected. The contents of 5-HMF were determined by HPLC. Results The HPLC determination method of 5-HMF in Corni Fructus was established. The contents of 5-HMF varied from undetected value to 0.292 8%, with the increase of storage time of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 years and the color gradually deepened from red, dark red, reddish brown to brown. The contents of 5-HMF in black wine-prepared Corni Fructus were 0.954 4%-1.837%. Conclusion The browning of Corni Fructus is related to the production of 5-HMF. With the extension of storage time of Corni Fructus, the color gradually deepens and the content of 5-HMF increase significantly. The storage time of Corni Fructus can be suggested to be one year.

BACKGROUND:Spine is relatively complex in structure, shape, material properties, and load bearing. The traditional biomechanical method cannot solve these problems. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the stress distribution of intervertebral disc, zygapophysial joints and vertebral body of degenerative scoliosis, and to provide accordance to the biomechanical mechanism of degenerative scoliosis occurrence and development. METHODS:Based on the successive CT images of spinal column from T12 to superior segment of S1 of degenerative scoliosis patients, the special material properties were attributed to the model to form the integrated and effective three-dimensional finite element model of degenerative scoliosis. The model was loaded on the anteflexion, extension, left lateral bending, right lateral bending, left rotation and right rotation conditons. Then the spinal activity and the stress distribution of intervertebral disc, vertebral body and articular cartilage of zygapophysial joints were calculated and analyzed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The spinal activities of degenerative scoliosis finite element model were less than those of common lumbar spine. The stress distribution of intervertebral disc was inclined to the verge of it and the greatest stress was appeared on the extension motion. The apex of scoliosis was the place of stress concentration and the obvious stress concentration of articular cartilage of zygapophysial joints was appeared on the rotation motion, then fol owed by the extension motion, especial y that of articular cartilage of zygapophysial joints on the apex of scoliosis. Stress concentration is easily appeared on the apex of scoliosis, and the extension and rotation motion can aggravate the development of degenerative scoliosis.

Objective To discuss the mechanism of progesterone that soften brain water content in traumatic brain edema in rats. Methods The models of focal lobe contusion and laceration of brain were made on the male rats treated by the progesterone following injury. Immunohistochemical method was used to assess the expression of aquaporin-4 (AQP4). Evan's Blue method was used to detect the permeability of blood-brain barrier. Results Treated by the progesteron, the brain water content was significantly decreased, and the lower expression of AQP4 took place on astrocytes of the contusion and peri-contusion of the brain tissue after 24 h,72h ,and 120h . The content of EB was decreased at 6 h and 24 h post-injury. Conclusions Progesterone can soften the traumatic brain water content, which may be associated with the attenuation of AQP4 in frontal lobe contusion following traumatic brain injury ( TBI) and progesterone can protect the blood-brain barrier at early time after TBI.

Objective To evaluate the quality coherence of commercial Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) decoction pieces. Methods The samples of 12 batches of commercial decoction pieces, 1 batch of sulphur fumigated Baizhi, and 1 batch of naturally dried Baizhi were collected. HPLC method was used to determine the fingerprints and the contents of imperatorin and isoimperatorin by C18 column (4.6 mm×250 mm, 5 μm) with a gradient mobile phase of acetonitrile-water solution system at the flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The column temperature was set at 35 ℃, and the max plot of detection wavelength was in 210-800 nm. Similarity calculation was used to analyze the data. Results The HPLC fingerprint analysis method was established with 12 common peaks. The similarities of 12 batches of commercial decoction pieces of Baizhi were 0.840-0.973. Their similarities compared with the sulphur fumigated Baizhi were 0.672-0.908. Compared with naturally dried Baizhi, the similarities of fingerprint were 0.536-0.684. The contents of imperatorin and isoimperatorin in 12 batches of commercial decoction pieces were 0.035%-0.140% and 0.028%-0.069%, respectively. Conclusion The quality of Baizhi decoction pieces was consistent. It can be speculated that Baizhi decoction pieces were processed with sulphur fumigation.

ObjectiveTo investigate and compare the behavioral changes, neuron loss of hippocampus and mossy fiber sprouting between pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE) model and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) kindling model in rats.MethodsAfter two different epilepsy models were made, Vedio was adopted to observe the behavioral changes. Nissl staining and Neo-timms' staining were separately used to observe and compare the neuron loss of hippocampus and mossy fiber sprouting in the dentate gyrus (DG) at different time points during epileptogenisis.ResultsNo recurrent spontaneous seizure, no neuron loss and no mossy fiber sprouting were found in PTZ kindling model; whereas obvious neuron loss was found in CA1, CA3 of hippocampus and hilus of DG, and mossy fiber sprouting were found in pilocarpine model in parallel with recurrent spontaneous seizures. ConclusionPTZ kindling model resembles absence epilepsy in human, while pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus model resembles chronic temporal epilepsy in human. Neuron loss and mossy fiber sprouting may play an important role in epileptogenisis. Pilocarpine-induced epilepsy model can be regarded as an ideal chronic temporal epilepsy model.
