Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common clinical infectious pathogens, and abused antibiotics enhances its resistance. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the major mutant strains. The generation of biofilm reduces the effects of antibiotics on Staphylococcus aureus, which makes the antibiotic therapy limited. New medicine need to be developed, and TCM as the natural medicine is becoming a hot spot. This article reviewed the research of TCM against MRSA biofilmsin recent years, and provided references for research and development of new medicine.

Radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) of the gasserian ganglion is a routine and effective technique for the treatment of classical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN). In this study we compared its efficacy in patients with CTN and atypically symptomatic or mixed trigeminal neuralgia (MTN). Fifty-seven patients were treated with RFT for trigeminal neuralgia from June 2006 to February 2009. Thirty patients had CTN, and 27 had MTN. Outcomes were measured by using the visual analog pain scale (VAS) and patients' reports of quality of life (QOL), medication usage, and complications over a follow-up period of up to 3 years. Our results showed that the patients with MTN were younger, tended to have bilaterial involvement of the first division, and were unresponsive to treatment. All surgeries were completed smoothly. About 86.7% CTN patients and 48.1% MTN patients responded immediately to RFT. The VAS scores were significantly higher in the CTN group than in MTN group (P<0.05). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year pain relief rates were 76.7%, 73.3%, and 73.3% in the CTN group and 46.6%, 41.4%, and 41.4% in the MTN group, respectively. The rates of pain relief for both groups leveled off at 2 years. Complications included numbness, dysesthesia, and anesthesia dolorosa. RFT did not cause any deaths and complications were low. The treatment was very effective for CTN and, to some degrees, effective for MTN. If numbness, dysesthesia, and anesthesia dolorosa are limited to the trigger area, QOL will be greatly improved.

Objective To investigate the effect of vacuum-assisted closure(VAC)on the circulating number of endothelia progenitor cell(EPCs)in diabetic patients with mild to moderate degrees of ischemic foot ulcer and their related factors. Methods A total of 84 diabetic patients with foot ulcer duration for at least 4 weeks and ankle brachial index(ABI)0.5~0.9 were selected and divided into and assigned to two groups according to 2: 1 randomization:vacuum-assisted closure(VAC)treatment group(n=56)and Non-VAC treatment group(n=28). The control group (NC) was composed of 18 patients who had normal glucose tolerance and lower extremity ulcer without arteriovenous disease. VAC was performed on the ulcer wound after debridement for 1 week in both VAC group and NC group, and the patients in Non-VAC group received conventional treatment process. The circulating number of EPCs was measured before and after various treatments and the influencing factors of their changes were analyzed. Results After VAC treatment, the circulating number of EPCs significantly increased in both VAC group and NC group[(85.3 ± 18.1)vs(34.1 ± 12.5)/106cells,(119.9 ± 14.4)vs(66.1 ± 10.6)/106cells,both P<0.05]. By contrast, the circulating number of EPCs had no significant change in Non-VAC group[(45.2 ± 19.4)vs(34.7 ± 16.8)/106cells, P>0.05]. In addition, the circulating levels of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and the protein expressions of VEGF and stromal cell-derived factor-1α(SDF-1α)in the granulation tissue also significantly increased after VAC treatment in both VAC group and NC group, but no significant change in Non-VAC group. Compared with Non-VAC group, the changes of VEGF and SDF-1α levels in the sera and granulation tissue were all significantly higher in both VAC group and NC group(P<0.05 or P<0.01). There were no significant differences in changes of the circulating number of EPCs, and VEGF and SDF-1α in the sera and granulation tissue between VAC group and NC group. Correlation analysis showed that the change of the circulating number of EPCs was correlated with the changes of VEGF and SDF-1α levels in the sera and granulation tissue of VAC group and NC group(P<0.05). Conclusion VAC treatment may increase the circulating number of EPCs in diabetic patients with mild to moderate ischemic foot ulcer as in non-diabetic controls, which may be attributed to the upregulation of systemic and local VEGF and SDF-1α levels.

ObjectiveTo analyze the mental health status of non-psychiatric inpatients in a general hospital, and to explore the relevant influencing factors, so as to provide references for the screening of mental health problems and the construction of intervention models among non-psychiatric inpatients. MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 916 non-psychiatric inpatients in a third grade class A general hospital in Guangzhou, and all the inpatients were assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 item (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 item (GAD-7), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) to detect their depression, anxiety, insomnia and suicide risk status. Thereafter, univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were used to screen the risk factors affecting the mental health of inpatients. ResultsA total of 339 (37.0%) inpatients with positive mental health problems were screened, and the screening results for each dimension revealed 218 cases (23.8%) of depression, 141 cases (15.4%) of anxiety, 257 cases (28.1%) of insomnia, 42 cases (4.6%) of suicidal ideation and 7 cases (0.8%) of suicidal behavior. Binary Logistic regression analysis showed that female (OR=1.379, P<0.05) was a risk factor for positive screening of mental health problems. Ordinal Logistic regression analysis denoted that age above 60 years old (OR=1.542, P<0.05) and singlehood (OR=2.055, P<0.05) were risk factors affecting the severity of depression, while senior high school to junior college education (OR=0.524, P<0.05) was a protective factor of depression, meantime, female (OR=1.472, P<0.05) was a risk factor affecting the severity of insomnia. ConclusionMental health problems are quite common among non-psychiatric inpatients in general hospitals, and are mainly affected by factors such as gender, age, marital status and educational background.
