1.Sulfotransferase and breast cancer
Journal of International Oncology 2010;37(8):591-593
Sulfotransferase (SULT) enzymes play important roles in the biosynthesis of estrogen. These enzymes catalyze the sulfation of estrogens to form biologically inactive molecules. Several studies have shown that Arg213His polymorphism in SULT1A1 gene may be a risk factor for breast cancer. In addition, a low mRNA expression of SULT has been significantly associated with reduced recurrence and improved overall survival in patients with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive tumors. Furthermore, SULT may be a crucial factor in the response to tamoxifen treatment. As an important part of estrogen synthetic pathways, SULTs are closely re lated to breast cancer.

Objective To observe the clinical effects of Xuesaitong Soft Capsule(XSC)on soft plaque in patients with cerebrovascular carotid atherosclerosis. Methods 240 patients with cerebrovascular carotid atherosclerosis were randomly recruited into two groups:120 patients in a conrtol group treated by conventional therapy(aspirin and simvastatin),while the other 120 patients in a treatment group were treated by conventional therapy plus XSC.Both groups received the treatment for 6 months, followed by 1 year's succedent study. Results The nature, number and size of soft plaque were apparently improved after treatment in both groups.Such improvements as subsidence of soft plaques, soft plaque turning into a hard plaque, the number of soft plaque and soft plaque volume in the treatment group were superior to the control group(t=3.525.0.01).Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events and re-hospitalization in the treatment group were also lower than the control group(t=3.678.0.01).Conclusion XSC is efrective in the treatment of carotid atherosclerosis soft plaque and significantly decrease the incidence of cardiovascular and cercbrovascular disease.

Objective To observe the effect and safety of Mailuoning Injection(MLN) in treating patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus accompanying lower extremity atherosclerotic obliterans. Methods The selected patients were assigned by randomized digital table to a treated group (120 cases treated with MLN) and a control group (60 cases treated with alprostadil). The clinical efficacy was assessed after 4 weeks of treatment. Results The total effective rate in the treated group was 95.0%, better than that in the control group,83.3%(P<0.01).Conclusion MLN has the effect of activating blood circulation.dissolving stasis and dredging collaterals, reducing the formation of thrombi. MLN is effective and safe when applied in clinical practice for the treatment of lower extremity diabetic atherosclerotic obliterans.

[Objective] To investigate the influence of injection of substance P (SP) and its antagonist into locus ceruleus on electroacupuncture of Neiguan for acute myocardial ischemia (AMI). [Methods] Rabbit model of AMI was set up by ligating left ventricular branch of coronary artery. Forty-nine rabbits were allocated to five groups: Group A (the control group), Group B (electroacupuncture of Neiguan), Group C (injection of SP), Group D (electroacupuncture of Neiguan and injection of SP) and Group E (electroacupuncture of Neiguan and injection of SP antagonist) . Locus ceruleus was located by cerebral stereotaxic apparatus. Dynamic changes of ST segment of electrocardiogram and morphological feature of myocardium were observed. [ Results ] Injection of SP promoted the recovery of AMI and enhance the effect of electroacupuncture of Neiguan for AMI. However, the above effects were counteracted by the injection of SP antagonist. [Conclusion] SP plays an important role in reducing the damage of AMI on electroacupuncture of Neiguan and may serve as an important mediator for the connection of Neiguan and the heart.

Objective To observe the effect of Shenqi Jiangtang granule (SJG) on atherosclerotic disease (LEAD) of lower extremity in patients with early type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods The patients were randomly assigned to a control group and a treatment group. 30 patients in the treatment group were treated by SJG and 30 patients in the control group were given Cilostazo. Both groups were treated for 3 months. Lower extremity vascular color Doppler image, blood levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured before and after the treatment. Results The thickness of atherosclerosis (AS) plaque and arterial media were obviously reduced (t=3.376, 3.468, P<0.05) , serum levels of IL-6 were also be lowered obviously (t=3.345, P<0.05) in the treatment group. While these indexes remained unchanged in the control group. Conclusion SJG has remarkable action in reducing the thickness of AS plaque and media of artery. The mechanism might be related with its reducing serum IL-6 level.

Objective To evaluate the feasibility, safety and operation timing of laparoscopic cholecys-tectomy in treatment of gallbladder calculi incarceration. Methods The data of 280 cases of gallbladder stone incarceration performed by LC were retrospectively analyzed. Results Eight out of 280 cases were converted to open cholecystectomy. The successful rate of LC was 97. 1%. There were no complications such as bile and intestinal injury. Conclusion LC for gallbladder calculi incarceration is safe and feasible as long as operators have skilled technique and make right decisions on operation timing.

Objective To observe the influence of Xin-ke-shu Capsule (XKSC) on NO and ET in patients with coronary artery disease(CAD) combined with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM), and to investigate its mechanism of treatment. Methods 80 patients with CAD combined with T2DM were randomly recruited into two groups: 40 patients in the treatment group were treated by conventional therapy plus XKSC, and the 40 in the control group treated by conventional therapy exclusively. The plasma level of NO and ET was observed before and after the three-month therapeutic course. Results The plasma level of ET in the treatment group significantly decreased after the treatmaent and was lower than that in the control group(P<0.01), but NO in the treatment group elevated significantly and was higher than that in the control group (P<0.01). Conclusion Xin-ke-shu Capsule displays its effect on protecting vascular endothelia by elevating the level of NO and decreasing the plasma level of ET.

Aim To study the effects of pioglitazone on the hypertrophic myocardial cells induced with high glucose and high insulin. Methods Using cultured myocardial cells as a model, The protein content was assayed with Lowrys method; The contracting frequency was counted by the inverted microscope; The protein synthesis was assayed with leucine intake method; The cardiomyocytes volumes was measured by computer photograph analysis system; the cellular hypertrophy was observed. Results Compared with verapamil, Pioglitazone significantly inhibited the protein content, cellular protein synthesis and volumes of cultured hypertrophic myocardial cells induced with high glucose and high insulin. Meanwhile pioglitazone and verapamil inhibited myocardial cells contracting frequency too. Conclusions Pioglitazone inhibited cardiac hypertrophy of cultured myocardial cells induced with high glucose and high glucose. The mechanism of the effect of pioglitazone on cardiac hypertrophy needs further study.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the occupational health condition in a shipyard in Guangzhou, China, and to provide a basis for improving the working environment.
METHODSThe monitoring data on occupational harmful factors in the workplace and the data on health examination of the workers were analyzed, and the occupational health condition in the shipyard was evaluated with the related occupational health standards.
RESULTSExcept benzene, toluene, and electromagnetic radiation, the dust (2.02%), grinding wheel dust (3.85%), wood dust (2 out of 4 workers exceeded the standard), welding fume (16.85%), manganese dioxide (17.98%), dimethylbenzene (8.00%), and noise (53.20%) were all out of limits to different degrees. The health examination results of 2450 workers in the shipyard showed that the respiratory impairment of dust-exposed workers (3.19%) and the hearing impairment of noise-exposed workers (12.21%) were comparatively severe.
CONCLUSIONThe occupational health condition in this shipyard is not good. In order to protect the workers from health hazards, it is urgent and necessary to improve the working environment and strengthen the personal protective measures.
