Objective In order to assess the activities of daily living (ADL) in the elderly and its related factors. Methods 3 198 elderly people in cities of Hefei and Tongling in Anhui Province were selected by cluster sampling and random sampling method. The damage of PADL and IADL among the elderly were investigated. The main influencing factors related to the damage of PADL and IADL was analyzed by single and multiple variable logistic regression model. Results The rates for loss of independence of PADL and IADL in the elderly were found to be 7.2% and 20.9%, and were higher in women than in men. The number of those people losing independence of PADL and IADL grew increasingly with age. Multiple factor analysis showed that deterioration of ADL was found to be largely associated with age, sex, education level, chronic disease, lower income and not being engaged in working. Conclusions The prevalence of disability in PADL and IADL of the elderly increased rapidly with age and that in ADL was higher for women than for men, and was higher for PADL than for IADL. Healthy status of the elderly people should be paid special attention to.

The VEPs evoked by different colors are differently distributed on human cerebral cortex. This study sought to shed light on the spatio-temporal distribution of chromatic VEPs and compare the distribution characteristics of chromatic VEPs evoked by different colors in different cerebral cortex regions. The subjects were asked to stare at the red, green, black gradient bars against a white background. The results show that the latency periods and the amplitudes of P1 and N1 peaks from different chromatic VEPs exhibit significant differences (P<0.001). The speed and intensity of cognitive task of red are higher than those of green. The latency periods and the amplitudes of P1 and N1 peaks from different cerebral cortex regions also display remarkable differences (P<0.001). The intensity of reaction in the temporal and occipital regions is stronger than that in other regions, and the latency periods in frontal area and central area are shorter than those in temporal and occipital regions.

The method of event-related potentials (ERP) was used to study the gender difference in face recognition. The stimuli in the experiment were 10 upright and 10 inverted face photos. The subjects, half female and half male, were asked to judge whether the face was upright or inverted. The results showed that the N170 wave forms were observed in the occipito-temporal regions and they were found exhibiting brain's right hemispheric dominance. The stimuli of different gender photos were noticed to have no significant impact on the N170 wave forms, but there were significant differentce in the amplitude and latency period of N170 between different gender participants. Moreover, there was marked difference in the latency period of the male participants watching the same gender face and different gender face. Similar results were not found in the ERP's latency period of female participants.

Objective To study insulin sensitivity and first-phase insulin secretion in obese subjects with impaired glucose regulation (ICR) in Shanghai. Methods A total of 129 subjects [38 lean controls and 91 obese subjects with ICR including 64 isolated impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) ,8 isolated impaired fasting glucose (IFC) and 19 IFC + ICT] underwent 75 g oral glucose tolerance test and insulin-modified reduced sample number (n = 12) of Bergman's minimal model method with frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test (FSIGTT). Insulin resistance was determined from the insulin sensitivity index (S1) of the FSIGTT. Insulin secretion was determined during the FSIGTT by the acute insulin response to glucose (AIRg). The disposition index (DI) , the product of AIRg and S1, was used to determine whether AIRg was adequate to compensate for insulin resistance. Results (1) Compared with normal controls, the value of S1 was significantly decreased in 3 groups with ICR (all P
