BACKGROUND:Bone cement solidification can improve the stability, strength and mechanical support of fractured vertebrae. However, there are few studies on the effect of bone cement dispersion within the fracture line on percutaneous vertebroplasty. OBJECTIVE:To analyze the effect of bone cement dispersion within the fracture line of thoracolumbar osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures on percutaneous vertebroplasty. METHODS:Totaly 90 patients with thoracolumbar osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were enroled, 53-80 years old, including 42 males and 48 females. Al these patients underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty with bone cement injection, and divided into two groups according to bone cement dispersion conditions: study group with good bone cement dispersion (n=60) and control group with poor bone cement dispersion (n=30). Visual analogue scale scores, Oswestry dysfunction index, Cobb's angle and adverse reactions were recordedbefore and after treatment. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:There were no differences in the visual analogue scale score and Oswestry dysfunction index between the two groups before treatment (P > 0.05). The visual analogue scale scores were significantly lower in the study group than the control group at 3 days after treatment and at the last folow-up (P < 0.05); the Oswestry dysfunction index and Cobb's angle were also lower in the study group than the control group at 3 days after treatment (P < 0.05). However, no difference was found in the Oswestry dysfunction index, Cobb's angle and bone cement leakage between the two groups at the last folow-up. These findings indicate that the percutaneous vertebroplasty show better effects on pain relief in patients with good bone cement dispersion that those with poor bone cement dispersion, and the vertebral stability is better as wel as the short-term effect is more obvious.

Adopting the two-step method and changing the proportion between PEG (Polyethylene glycol) and PTMG (poly (tetrahydrofuran), we used the MDI (4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate) and short chain extender BDO (1,4-butanediol) as hard segment, the PTMG and PEG as soft segment, and hence prepared a series of polyether-based thermoplastic polyurethanes. FTIR showed the structure character of these polyurethanes. The determination of mechanics property and water contact angles revealed their good mechanics properties and hydrophilicity. Blood compatibility was evaluated by hemolysis test and platelet adhesion test, which revealed their good hemocompatibility. So those polyurethanes may be of wide application in the future.

Objective To explore the correlation between apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)and neonatal behavioral neurological assessment(NBNA) of newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE),and to evaluate ADC in the early diagnosis of HIE from the imaging perspective. Method One hundred and nine neonates aged 0—7 days with HIE underwent conventional MRI and DWI. According to HIE grading standards, there were 43 neonates in the mild group, 38 in the moderate group, 28 in the severe group, and meanwhile 24 normal neonates with the same ages were selected as the control group. All cases were assessed with NBNA, and ADC values of bilateral frontal white matter, parietal white matter, periventricular white matter, posterior limb of the internal capsule(PLIC), ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus, lenticular nucleus, splenium of the corpus callosum, brainstem were measured. ADC values of different groups were compared by analysis of variance, and the correlations between ADC values of all ROIs and NBNA were analyzed by Pearson correlation. Results Except lenticular nucleus and the brainstem, ADC values of frontal white matter, parietal white matter, periventricular white matter and PLIC, ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus, splenium of the corpus callosum were decreased in the mild, moderate, severe group. In the mild, moderate, and severe group, the ADC values of frontal deep white matter were(1.82± 0.33)× 10-3,(1.77 ± 0.34)× 10-3 and(1.62 ± 0.31)× 10-3 mm2/s,while they were(1.81 ± 0.34)× 10-3,(1.79 ± 0.27)× 10-3 and(1.72 ± 0.31)× 10-3 mm2/s for the parietal deep white matter,(1.27 ± 0.15)× 10-3,(1.23 ± 0.12)× 10-3 and(1.15 ± 0.17)× 10-3 mm2/s for the periventricular white matter,(1.08 ± 0.09)× 10-3,(0.97 ± 0.07)×10-3 and(0.84±0.06)×10-3 mm2/s for the PLIC,(1.13±0.07)×10-3 ,(1.08±0.13)×10-3 and(1.00± 0.13)× 10-3 mm2/s for the ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus,(1.27 ± 0.22)× 10-3,(1.18 ± 0.16)× 10-3 and (1.00 ± 0.23)× 10-3 mm2/s for the splenium of the corpus callosum. There were statistically significant differences between the 3 groups (F=61.27,16.27, 23.26, 72.70, 26.73, 66.09,all P<0.05). In the mild, modreate and severe group, NBNA were(36.8 ± 1.4) in the mild group,(33.5 ± 1.6) in the moderate, and (29.3 ± 2.6) in the severe group. There was positive correlation between ADC values of frontal white matter, parietal white matter, periventricular white matter and PLIC, ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus, splenium of the corpus callosum and NBNA scores(r=0.60,0.49,0.54,0.67,0.56,0.65,all P<0.05). Conclusions There are correlations between ADC values of the related ROIs of HIE and NBNA scores. Combining two aspects might diagnose the brain injury of HIE more accurately and objectively.

PEG (Mn = 1000)-segmented polyurethanes, with hard segment percentage of 40%, 50% and 55% and named PU-H40, PU-H50 and PU-H55 respectively, were synthesized by bulk polymerization. The structure of PU was characterized by FTIR, DSC, and GPC. Mechanical properties, water contact angles and water vapor transmit rate(WVTR) were also tested. FTIR and DSC showed that the degree of microphase separation increased with the hard content. Mechanical test showed the tensile strength of PU-H50 to be 25 MPa, the highest tensile strength of the PU series. By the use of PEG as soft segment, the surface hydrophilicity of the materials increased dramatically. Owing to its high degree of microphase separation and the mobility of soft segment, the water contact angle of PU-H55 attained to 33 degrees. The WVTRs of PU-H40, PU-H50 and PU-H55 were 789 g/m2/24h, 705 g/m2/24h and 623g/m2/24h respectively. These data suggest that the materials are suitable for fabricating such biomedical articles as surgical gloves, wound dressing and medical protective coating.
