4. Changes and enlightenment of diagnostic criteria for hypertension
Chinese Journal of Practical Internal Medicine 2019;39(01):5-7
The definition of hypertension has been the object of controversy for many years. The First Report of the Joint National Committee( JNC-1) on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure was issued in 1977 and the levels of blood pressure above 160/95 mmHg was considered as high blood pressure(BP). The early JNC series guidelines are relatively vague on the diagnostic criteria and treatment goals of hypertension, and put more emphasis on diastolic blood pressure(DBP) in hypertension diagnosis. Since the publication of JNC VI reports, hypertension is defined as office systolic blood pressure(SBP) values≥140 mmHg and/or DBP values≥90 mmHg. The 2017 ACC/AHA Hypertension Guidelines changed the diagnostic criteria for hypertension by 130/80 mmHg and has caused widespread controversy at home and abroad. The Chinese Medical Doctor Association issued a scientific statement on the diagnostic criteria for hypertension and treatment targets of high BP in China. Although the standards proposed by the new ACC/AHA hypertension guideline is not recognized by other national guidelines, its concept of earlier prevention of hypertension has been widely accepted.

OBJECTIVETo compare therapeutic effects of catgut implantation at acupoint and routine acupuncture on prolapse of lumbar intervertebral disc.
METHODSOne hundred and forty cases were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group, 70 cases in each group. The treatment group were treated with catgut implantation at acupoint, once each week, 3 sessions constituting one course, and the control group with routine acupuncture, once every other day, 10 sessions constituting one course.
RESULTSThe effective rate was 95.6% after treatment of one course and 88.2% 3 months later in the treatment group, which were better than 84.6% and 72.3% in the control group, respectively (Both P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONCatgut implantation at acupoint has a better therapeutic effect on prolapse of lumbar intervertebral disc, with lower cost.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2003;16(4):340-347
OBJECTIVEImpact of the presence of bacteria associated with a marine dinoflagellate, Alexandrium tamarense CI01, on the growth and toxin production of the algae in batch culture was investigated.
METHODSPronounced changes in the activities of the algal culture were observed when the culture was treated with different doses of a mixture of penicillin and streptomycin.
RESULTSIn the presence of antibiotics at the initial concentration of 100 u/mL in culture medium, both algal growth and toxin yield increased markedly. When the concentration of antibiotics was increased to 500 u/mL, the microalgal growth was inhibited, but resumed in a few days to eventually reach the same level of growth and toxin production as at the lower dose of the antibiotics. When the antibiotics were present at a concentration of 1 000 u/mL, the algal growth was inhibited permanently.
CONCLUSIONSThe results indicate that antibiotics can enhance algal growth and toxin production not only through their inhibition of the growth and hence competition for nutrients, but also through their effects on the physiology of the algae.

OBJECTIVETo construct a recombinant lentiviral vector (pXZ208-BDDhFVIII) mediating B-domain-deleted human coagulation factor VIII (BDDhFVIII) gene and investigate its expression in HLF, Chang-Liver and MSC cells.
METHODSBDDhFVIII gene fragment was separated by endonuclease digestion and was cloned into the multiple cloning sites of pXZ208 to construct a recombinant lentiviral vector pXZ208-BDDhFVIII. Viral particles were prepared by means of three-plasmid cotransfection of 293T package cells by calcium phosphate precipitation. After infection, the coagulant activity of human FVIII in the culture medium of 293T, HLF, Chang-Liver and MSC cells was assayed by one-stage method. The gene transduction efficiency was assayed by flow cytometry (FCM). Furthermore, PCR was performed to test the integration of BDDhFVIII.
RESULTSThe infection rates of HLF, Chang-Liver and MSC were (74.52 +/- 7.57)%, (27.24 +/- 6.53)% and (42.34 +/- 5.84)% respectively. The activities of FVIII in supernatants of HLF, Chang-Liver and MSC were (54.1 +/- 5.6)%, (22.5 +/- 2.9)% and (12.5 +/- 2.7)% respectively. BDDhFVIII gene integration was detected in all the infected cells.
CONCLUSIONThe recombinant lentiviral vector pXZ208-BDDhFVIII was successfully constructed and efficiently integrated into target cells to express human FVIII activity in vitro.
