AIM: To study the alterations of heme oxygenase-1 mRNA in vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMC) induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS) and the role of heme oxygenase(HO)/carbon monoxide(CO)pathway in the disorders of regulation of cardiovascular system by LPS. METHODS: LPS (final concentrations 10 mg/L,30 mg/L and 50 mg/L) was added in cultured VSMCs for 6 h respectively or 10 mg/L LPS for 9 h and 18 h. MDA content, LDH release and the rate of trypan blue uptake of VSMC were measured. HO-1 mRNA expression was examined by Northern Blot. RESULTS: VSMC HO-1 mRNA expression was increased gradually with the increasing of LPS concentration. When final concentration of LPS was 50 mg/L, the HO-1 mRNA expression of VSMC was increased by 176.7% compared with control. When LPS final concentration was 10 mg/L, the HO-1 mRNA expression increased gradually along with the culture time. When cultured for 18 h, the HO-1 mRNA expression of VSMC was increased by 195.6% compared with control. Only at LPS 50 mg/L for 6 h and 10 mg/L for 18 h, the rate of trypan blue uptake,MDA content and LDH release were significantly increased. CONCLUSION: LPS can induce the HO-1 mRNA expression of VSMC and that were dose-dependent and time-dependent. The inducible HO may play an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular system under LPS. [

BACKGROUND:Light-cured composite resin is used for dental crown defective repair in terms of both function and morphology.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the therapeutic effects of light-cured composite resins on crown defects.
METHODS:Relevant literatures concerning light-cured composite resins for repair of crown defects were retrieved. Literatures which met the study standard were deeply analyzed. Meanwhile, fol ow-up results and literature results were compared for patients receiving light-cured composite resins for repair of crown defects to identify the feasibility of light-cured composite resins for repair of crown defects.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Based on the included data, the successful rate of light-cured composite resins for repair of crown defects was over 90%. Clinical fol ow-up of 12 patients undergoing light-cured composite resin showed that the repaired crowns were stable and fixed, and exhibited a symmetrical appearance with the contralateral namesake tooth of the adjacent tooth, and there was a normal bite relationship. During the fol ow-up study, 19 teeth repaired from 12 patients had no loosing, no shedding, no percussion pain and normal bite relationship. X-ray films showed no apical shadows. Light-cured effects were limited to the upper and middle parts but not to the apical part. Therefore, a better therapeutic effect can be obtained.

Objective To evaluate the clinical characteristics and surgical risks for elderly patients with gastric cancer. Methods The clinical data from 607 patients, who received surgical therapy for gastric cancer between January 2006 and December 2009, were retrospectively analyzed.Among them, 267 patients were over 65 years of age, and the other 340 patients (≤65 years of age)were served as control. Complete surgical resection was done by doctors in same group. The preoperative complications such as cardiopulmonary disease and post-operative complications as well as pathologic patterns were compared between two groups. Results Coexisted diseases were found more in elderly patients than in controls (68.91% vs 31.63 %, P<0.01). Whereas there was no significant difference between two groups with respect to post-operative complication [28. 19% (75/267)vs 25.59 % (87/340)]. However, the incidence of cardiopulmonary complications, especially pulmonary infection, was higher in elderly patients than in controls (17.23% vs 5.29% ,P<0.01). The digestive tract complications were related to the pattern of radical operation. Post-operative complication occurred less in patients treated with D1 radical operation than those with D2 and D3 radical operation. Conclusions The incidence of post-operative complication in elderly patients with gastric cancer was closely related to the surgical method. The elderly patients may has less complications if they were operated with D1 radical method which can reduce risk of complication and improve the quality of life.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the clinical efficacy of YANG's pricking-cupping therapy for knee osteoar thritis (KOA). Methods This was a multi-center randomized parallel controlled trial. One hundred and seventy one patients with KOA were randomly allocated to a pricking-cupping group (89 cases) and a conventional acu puncture group (82 cases). Neixiyan (EX-LE 4), Dubi (ST 35) and ashi points were selected in the two groups. Patients in the pricking-cupping group were treated with YANG's pricking-cupping therapy; the seven-star needles were used to perform pricking at acupoints, then cupping was used until slight bleeding was observed. Patients in the conventional acupuncture group were treated with semi-standardized filiform needle therapy. The treatment was given for 4 weeks (from a minimum of 5 times to a maximum of 10 times). The follow-up visit was 4 weeks. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were adopted for the efficacy assessments.
RESULTSThe pain score, stiffness score, physical function score and total score of WOMAC were all reduced after 4-week treatment and during follow-up visit in the two groups (all P<0. 0001). Except that the difference of stiffness score between the two groups was not significant after 4-week treatment (P>0. 05), each score and total score of WOMAC in the pricking-cupping group were lower than those in the conventional acupuncture group after 4-week treatment and during follow-up visit (P<0. 0001, P<0. 01). After 2-week treatment, 4-week treatment and during follow-up visit, the VAS was all reduced compared with that before treatment (all P<0. 0001) ; with the increase of the treatment, the reducing trend of VAS was more significant (P<0. 0001). The scores of VAS in the pricking-cupping group were lower than those in the conventional acupuncture group after 4-week treatment and during follow-up visit (P < 0. 01, P <0. 0001). CONCLUSION The YANG's pricking-cupping and conventional acupuncture therapy can both significantly improve knee joint pain and function in patients with KOA, which are relatively safe. The pricking cupping therapy is superior to conventional acupuncture with the identical selection of acupoints.
