Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2014;(5):310-315
Objective: To observe the clinical effect of electroacupuncture (EA) combined with tuina on acute lumbar sprain and lumbar muscle tone before and after treatment.
Methods: A total of 130 acute lumbar sprain cases were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group, 65 in each group. Cases in the observation group were treated with EA combined with tuina, whereas cases in the control group were treated with Diclofenac Sodium Dual Release Enteric-coated capsules. The muscle tones in two groups were tested before and after treatment.
Results: The recovery rate and overall response rate in the observation group were 66.2% and 93.8% respectively, versus 56.9% and 87.7% in the control group, showing no between-group statistical significances (P>0.05). After treatment, the force-displacement area under curve (AUC) in both groups showed a significance difference (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Both EA combined with tuina and aforementioned oral medication have remarkable effects for acute lumbar sprain, and the former can better improve the lumbar muscle tone in patients with acute lumbar sprain.
5.Observation on clinical effect of acupuncture for peripheral facial paralysis in acute period and facial nerve F-wave
Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2015;(6):344-348
Objective:To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture on peripheral facial paralysis in acute period and changes in facial nerve F-wave.
Methods:A total of 148 eligible cases were randomly allocated into an observation group (n=74) and a control group (n=74) by their visiting sequence. In addition to oral Prednisone and Aciclovir tablets, patients in the observation group received point-towards-point acupuncture therapy, whereas patients in the control group received routine acupuncture therapy. The treatment was done once a day and 6 times made up a course of treatment. The efficacy evaluation was made after 2 courses. The electromyography (EMG) F-wave was monitored before and after treatment.
Results:After 2 courses of treatment, the recovery rate and total effective rate were 47.3% and 94.6% respectively in the observation group, versus 20.3% and 82.4% in the control group, showing statistical differences (P<0.01). Before treatment, the facial nerve F-wave latency on the affected side was prolonged and its frequency of occurrence was decreased in both groups. After treatment, the F-wave latency and frequency of occurrence were significantly improved in both groups (P<0.05) and there were significant between-group differences (P<0.05).
Conclusion:In addition to Western medication, point-towards-point acupuncture therapy can obtain more accurate and better effect than routine acupuncture therapy for acute peripheral facial paralysis.
6.Research Progress of Treatment of Prolapsed Lumbar Intervertebral Disc by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2004;2(5):53-58
This article reviewed information related to the treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion by acupuncture and moxibustion in recent 10 years, so as to grasp the current situation of this specific topic and provide the reference evidence for the further study. According to the related professional literature of acupuncture and moxibustion, the authors found that acupuncture and moxibustion therapy had definite therapeutic effect on the lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. But most clinical reports were retrospective and had no uniform therapeutic effect criteria, interfering with the screening of the best therapeutic plan. The authors suggested that the study of action mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion and the clinical prospective survey should be intensified.

The total effective rate was 90.2% in the observation group, 82.5% in the control group Ⅰ and 85.0% in the control group Ⅱ, indicating a significant difference (P<0.05) in comparison of the therapeutic effects between the observation group, the control group Ⅰ and control group Ⅱ. In the treatment of herniated lumbar disc by manual manipulations plus external herbal application, the therapeutic effect is precise and obviously higher than that in the treatment by single manual manipulations or by external application of herbal drugs.
9.Effect of Acupuncture to the Ultra-micro Structure of the Injured Rat Lumbar Nerve and Inflammatory Medium
Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2005;3(4):44-46
Objective: To establish the animal model of the compressed lumbar nerve and investigate the effect of acupuncture to the ultra-micro structure of the injured rat lumbar nerve and inflammatory medium. Method: Separate the laboratory rats into Group A (model group, n= 45) and Group B (model + electroacupuncture group, n = 45). observe injured lumbar nerve tissue with optic microscope and electron microscope and measure the content of PGE2 and 5-HT. Results: Hyperemia around the nerve tissue, edema and nerve root demyelination of electroacupuncture 15 day (Group B) is less than model group 15 day (Group A). The structure of Schwann cell is normal. Demyelination of electroacupuncture 30-day group (Group B) becomes slight and the nerve edema alleviates. In the Group B,contents of PGE2 and 5-HT after electroacupuncture obviously decrease compared to the Group A. Conclusion: Electroacupuncture can alleviates inflammatory reaction around the injured lumbar nerve and improve the ultra-micro structure of lumbar nerve root.
10.Effect of Antiobesity Acupuncture on Body Fat Content, Bone Mineral Content and Lean Body Mass of Simple Obese Women
Chinese Journal of Information on Traditional Chinese Medicine 2006;0(04):-
Objective To observe the changes of body fat content, bone mineral content and lean body weight before and after antiobesity acupuncture. Method Thirty seven cases of simple obese women were acupunctured by syndrome differentiation. Indicators related to obesity, body fat content, bone mineral content and lean body mass were measured and statistically analyzed before and after treatment. Results Acupuncture significantly improved objective indicators of obesity (BMI, waist, hip and arm circumference), reduced body fat content (whole body, upper limbs, torso), lowered lean body mass (body, upper and lower limbs), and had no effect on bone mineral content. Conclusion Acupuncture weight loss has no side effects of reducing bone mineral density, especially fits for patients with abdominal obesity (lipid-decrease and no lean-reduction on torso).
