Objective To investigate the relationship of microembolic signals (MESs) between the degree of symptomatic carotid artery stenosis, ultrasonic characteristics of plaques, peak systolic velocity at the stenotic site and risk factors for stroke. Methods A total of 52 patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis were enrolled. MESs of bilateral middle cerebral arteries were monitored and detected by carotid color Doppler flow imaging. Results The positive rate of MESs on the symptomatic sides was significantly higher than that on the asymptomatic sides (28. 8% vs. 4. 5%, P < 0. 05). The positive rate was not significantly correlated with the degree of stenosis, ultrasonic characteristics of plaques, peak systolic velocity on the stenotic sides, and risk factors for stroke. Conclusions MESs mainly occurred on the symptomatic sides of carotid artery stenosis, and they were more closely correlated with unstable plaques.

Object To probe into the objectivity and authenticity of four properties (cold, heat, warm, and cool) of raw Coptidis Rhizoma (RCR) and their preparations from biophysics and biochemistry. Methods Microcalorimetry was used to obtain the metabolic growth power-time curve of bacteria affected by the total alkaloid in different preparations of RCR and biothermokinetic parameters. Combined with the records of ancient herbal literatures, the influence of properties by different preparations to RCR were synthetically evaluated. Results All the effective total alkaloid in different preparations of RCR can restrain the Escherichia coli growth and metabolism in different level. Drugs, such as Coptidis Rhizoma Stir-fried with ginger juice (CRGJ), Coptidis Rhizoma stir-fried with wine (CRW), and Coptidis Rhizoma stir-fried with Fructus Evodiae (CRFE), with a little Warm Property can decrease the multiplication rate constants of E. coli index and increase heat output in growth metablism remarkably, while the drugs, such as RCR, Coptidis Rhizoma stir-fried with vinegar (CRV), and Coptidis Rhizoma stir-fried with gallbladder juice (CRGBJ), with a little Cold Property can decrease the multiplication rate constants and increase heat output a little. There was a stable difference between them. Conclusion Microcalorimetry is a new and useful mean for the study of the properties of tradition Chinese medicine.

To explore the effects of long-term treatment of different dietary energy levels on ovarian expression of mRNAs for LHR and FSHR,the present study was performed in nine growth-matched littermate crossbred (Land-race×Large White X Duroc) prepubertal gilts. At approximately 30 kg of body weight and 50 day of age, gilts were housed with individual feeding stalls and placed on a normal level of feeding for 90 days (dl-90) with free ac-cess to water and food throughout the whole research. From d91 ,littermates were divided and randomly assigned to one of the following three treatment lines for 3 weeks till d112:Group H,Group M, and Group L, fed the high energy level diet (n = 3, digestible energy 14.87 MJ/kg), moderate energy level diet (n = 3, digestible energy 12.39 MJ/ kg), and low energy level diet (n = 3, digestible energy 9.98 MJ/kg), respectively. When gilts were slaughtered on d112 after 3 weeks energy treatment, both ovaries of every gilts were collected, snap frozen in liquid nitrogen and re-tained at -80℃ for use to determine and analysis the relative amount of ovarian LHR and FSHR mRNAs using semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Results showed that the effect of dietary energy treatment was notable: the ovarian ex-pression of mRNAs for LHR and FSHR was significantly higher (P<0.05) in gilts treated with high energy diet compared to gilts treated with moderate and low energy diets, while gilts treated with low energy diet had a signifi-cantly lower (P<0.05) ovarian LHR and FSHR expression compared with gilts treated with moderate and high en-ergy diets. These results revealed that ovarian expression of I.HR and FSHR in prepubertal gilts increased as the lev-el of dietary energy intake elevated,i, e. , high energy diet can markedly enhance ovarian expression of mRNAs for LHR and FSHR,whereas energy deficit markedly suppress the expression.

Objective To study the shielding effect of equivalent thickness and size of lead glasses on eye lens of interventional radiologists. Methods Based on the human voxel phantom and MCNPX software, doses to eye lens of radiologists were simulated under different conditions of wearing lead glasses and beam projections, and measurements were performed with anthropomorphic phantom placed with eye lens dosimeters to verify simulation results. Results The results showed that the dose to eye lens reduced by a factor from 3 to 9 when the equivalent thickness of glasses ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 mm Pb with a len size of 20 cm2.The dose reduction factors (DRF) not only depended on the lead equivalent, but also on the beam projection of X-rays.However,the increase in DRF was not significant whenever the lead equivalent of glasses was larger than 0.35 mm.Furthermore, the DRF was proportional to the size of glass lens from 6 to 30 cm2 with the same lead equivalent. The simulation results were in well agreement with the measured ones. Conclusions For more reasonable and effective protection of the eye lens of interventional radiologists,a pair of glasses with a lead equivalent of 0.5 mm and large-sized lens is recommended.
