AIM: To observe pathomorphological changes in cerebral cortex and hippocampus in the mouse with synthetic vascular dementia. METHODS: The synthetic vascular dementia model was produced in the mouse. Animals were killed 7 d, 15 d, and 30 d after the operation, brain tissues were removed and embedded in paraffin. Section of 8?m thickness were stained with hematoxylin-eosin(HE) and Nissl methods, and observed with light microscope. RESULTS: The cerebral cortex in the mouse became thinner on the seventh day, karyopyknosis in partial nervous cells was formed, the number of local neurons was reduced, sieve structure was observed, and glial cells proliferated, with the similar results 15 d and 30 d after operation. Model mouses hippocampal cells in CA 1 area were reduced and almost disappeared 30 d after operation. At the same time, glial cells were abundantly proliferated, tubercles were formed. Cells in CA 2, CA 3 area were also reduced and hippocampal sclerosis occurred. CONCLUSION: Delayed necrosis of hippocampal pyramidal cells may be the pathological basis of ischemia cerebral vascular dementia.

Objective Shunaoxin Dropping Pills (SDPs), a Chinese patent medicine, has been used widely in China for the treatment of headache, amnesia, and insomnia. The aim of the present study is to observe the effect of SDPs on inducing angiogenesis and neurogenesis in vitro. Methods The present testing system using the serum obtained from animals ig treated with SDPs and a co-culture system in vitro was used to investigate if SDPs promotes brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) tube formation and neural differentiation of neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs), which plays important roles in angiogenesis and neurogenesis. Results The SDPs serum sampled from rats ig treated with SDPs for 3 d dose-dependently promoted the tube like structure formation of cultured BMECs, and enhanced the fraction of MAP-2 positive cells of NSPCs, which co-cultured with the BMECs and astrocyte. In addition, there was no significant change in the percentage of glial fibrillary acidic protein positive cells. Conclusion Our results show that SDPs serum can induce neural differentiation and BMECs tube formation in vitro.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2002;19(3):389-391
There has been a lot of controversies on which layer the silastic implants should be inserted in the augmentation rhinoplasty, i.e. subperiosteal or deep subfascial. This study is to investigate the biomechanical properties of human nasal periosteum and deep fascia, including tensile strength, stress-strain and stress relaxation characters under uniaxial tension system. The periosteum is stronger in tensile strength than that of the fascia, but it is less elastic. Under a sudden increase of load, the periosteum relaxes far less than the fasia. Therefore, in view of biomechanics, the periosteum is thicker, tougher, stiffer and less relaxation than facia, thus has a better fixation effect.

Objective: The expression of WNT5A is associated with aggressive tumor biology and poor clinical outcomes of various types of cancer. However, its function in the cell migration of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) should be elucidated. Methods:The expres-sion of WNT5A in SCLC and normal lung tissues was detected by immunohistochemisty. The correlation between the expression and clinical characteristics of WNT5A was analyzed. The function of WNT5A in regulating cell migration was studied in DMS153 cell line in vitro. Small interfering RNA (SiRNA) was used to knock down WNT5A. Wound healing and Transwell tests were used to determine the migration rate of DMS153. The phosphorylated JNK expression was detected by Western blot analysis. Results:The WNT5A expression was higher in SCLC tissues than that of normal lung tissues. WNT5A was correlated with clinical stages, lymph nodes, and distance me-tastasis in SCLC. The high expression of WNT5A was accompanied by abnormal levels of NSE and Pro-GRP. The WNT5A phosphoryla-tion of JNK promoted cell migration in vitro. Conclusion:The expression of WNT5A in SCLC is high and correlated with tumor metasta-sis. The influence of WNT5A/JNK on the cell migration property of DMS153 supports the concept that WNT5A can initiate the cell mi-gration of SCLC, which suggested that WNT5A may be a marker and can be potentially used as an effective therapeutic target for the SCLC metastasis.
