The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of different posts on the fracture mechanics of endodontically-treated teeth with open apex. Forty-eight human maxillary anterior teeth were collected, and the root was transversely sectioned 12 mm under the cementoenamal junction (CEJ). These samples were then randomly divided into two groups, i.e., minor diameter open apex root (group A) and major diameter open apex root (group B), with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) placed into the apical 4 mm in the root canals. Subsequently, both groups were respectively further divided into three subgroups as follows: fiber-post (subgroup 1), metal post (subgroup 2) and non-post (subgroup 3) group. Teeth were restored with a composite resin crown and tested by using a universal testing machine at the rate of 1 mm/min cross-head. Values of the maximum fracture resistance and failure patterns were recorded and compared among all subgroups. In addition, the changes of MTA properties were carefully examined via X-ray photography. Our results indicate that (1) In group A, the mean value of fracture resistance for teeth restored with fiber posts were statistically higher than that with either metal post or non-post; (2) In group B, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean value of fracture resistance among three subgroups; (3) No statistical significance in the mean value of fracture resistance was found between group A and group B; (4) The failure modes of most samples (58%) were irreparable; (5) MTA in two teeth developed cracks after loading tests. In conclusion, endodontically-treated teeth restored with fiber posts are more resistant to fracture than those restored with either metal posts or non-post, and most of the fracture modes are catastrophic in nature.

Objective To explore the contamination by Legionella pneumophila in cooling water of centralized air condi-tioning system in hospitals and hotels.Methods In Aug2001,the water from cooling towers of centralized air conditioning sys-tems in4hospitals and2hotels were sampled in W city.The membranes filtering the cooling water samples were treated by hy-drochloric acid.After treatment,the mixed treated solution was inoculated into GVPC plate and cultured in candle jar.The susepectable colonies were identified by biochemical test,serological test and PCR test respectively.Results5strains of L pneu mophila in cluding3strains of Lp1type and2strains of Lp5type were isolated from water samples of the cooling towers of centralized air conditioning systems in2hospitals and one star-grade hotel in W city.Conclusion The contamination by le-gionella in water of cooling tower of centralized air conditioning system in hospitals and hotels should be monitored closely.

Objective To study the effect of astragaloside on proliferation and apoptosis in human keloid fibroblasts.Methods The human keloid fibroblast ceils were treated with different concentration of astragaloside(10、20、40 ng/mL).Cell proliferation was detected by MTT,the gene expreesion levels and protein levels of apoptosis-related proteins,survivin,p53 and Bcl-2.were determined by real-time PCR and Western blot,respectively.Results Comparecl with control group(treated with 0 ng/mL astragaloside),the absorbance values (A490 nm) of each concentration group were significantly reduced,which suggest that the proliferation of all keloid fibroblast were markably inhibited in a dose-dependent way (P＜0.05).The gene expreesion levels and protein levels of apoptosis-related proteins,survivin、Bcl-2 were largely suppressed and P53 werelargely promoted in a dose-dependent.Conclusion The keloid fibroblasts cells proliferation and apoptosis could be regulated by astragaloside.

BACKGROUND:Skin grafting is crucial for patients with deep burns, but limited source of autologous skin grafts is an existing difficulty.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of xenogeneic (porcine) acelular dermal matrix in the treatment of deep burn wounds and the feasibility of its application.
METHODS:Forty-one patients with deep burn were divided into two groups according to the intention of the patients, 21 cases in control group and 20 cases in observational group, folowed by autologous split-thickness skin grafting alone or combined with different (porcine) acelular dermal matrix, respectively. After 12 months of folow-up, the graft success rate at postoperative 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks and skin graft contraction rate and wound repair at postoperative 3, 6, 9, 12 months were observed and compared between two groups. Moreover, levels of inflammatory factors were detected and compared between two groups at postoperative 1, 2, 3 months.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The skin graft success rates showed no difference between two groups at postoperative 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks (P > 0.05). The skin graft contraction rates also showed no difference between two groups at postoperative 3, 6, 9, 12 months (P > 0.05). After 12 months of folow-up, no serious scar hyperplasia, but soft texture appeared in the control group. In the observational group, three cases presented with local pigmentation at the early stage, but it gradualy subsided with time; no obvious scar, but only smal, point-like scar, was visible, and the repaired wound exhibited soft touch. No adverse events and death occurred in both two groups. Experimental results show that the treatment of deep burns with autologous split-thickness skin grafting combined with xenogeneic (porcine) acelular dermal matrix is safe and effective, which can improve the quality of wound healing.

Objective To explore the consistency and significance of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and clinical and histopathological findings in adoptively transferred uveitis in mice.Methods The adoptively transferred experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) model was established by intraperitoneal injection of antigen-specific T cells in C57BL/6 mice.Since 9 days after transferred,inflammation of eyes was observed by indirect ophthalmoscope with +90D lens and record clinical scores every 3 days.The disease was divided into 6 phases including onset phase,early phase,pre-peak phase,peak phase,resolution phase and late phase of EAU,which respectively corresponding to clinical score 0.5,1.0,1.5-2.0,2.5-3.0,1.0-2.0 and less than 1.0.Since 9 days after transferred,the retina and retinal thickness (RT) was measured by spectralis OCT about 1 disc from the disc edge in 10 time points including 9,11,16,21,25,30,35,40,50 and 60 days after transferred.The OCT score was recorded as from 0.0 to 4.0.After transferred 9,21 and 60 days,the mice were killed and eye balls were examined in histology.OCT score,clinical score and histology in the mouse were compared and analyzed.Results The disease was divided into onset phase,early phase,pre-peak phase and peak phase of EAU,which respectively corresponding to 9,16,21 and 26 days after transferred.In four phases,OCT score were 0.5,1.0,2.0 and 4.0 respectively.After transferred 30 days,which was in resolution phase of EAU,the inflammation cells in vitreous were decreased and OCT score was 3.0.After transferred 60 days,which was in late phase of EAU,inflammation cells in vitreous were disappeared and retina was atrophic topically.The histology showed the vitreous has slight inflammation cells and retinal structure was normal at onset of EAU.The vitreous has massive inflammation cells and retina structure was disorder at pre-peak of EAU.And in resolution phase of EAU,the inflammation cells in vitreous were slightly and retina was atrophic and thinned.The data in this study demonstrated that OCT score was well correlated with clinical score in EAU (r=0.957 9,P＜0.000 1).Conclusion OCT and clinical and histopathological findings in adoptively transferred uveitis in mice were consistency and OCT is contribute to evaluate the disease dynamically and quantifiably.
