ObjectiveTo compare tongue positions at rest between normal occlusion people and patients with anterior cross-bite malocclusions, and to explore whether there is any abnormality in the tongue position of the anterior cross-bite malocclusions. Methods Twenty adults of normal bite (8 males and 12 females, with an average age of 23.8 years) and 20 adults of anterior cross-bite (1 1males and 9 females, with an average age of 24.6 years) were involved in this study. The position habits of tongue were investigated by a questionnaire. The tongue positions, which were enhanced by applying barium to tongue and palatal surface, were compared by cephalometric roentgenogram. Two groups were compared by t-test to determine the variation of anterior cross-bite. Results In normal occlusion group, the dorsum of tongues was sealed with all palatal surfaces except uvula site.In anterior cross bite group, tongues were far from palate, and were difficult to lift. The profile of tongue showed standing upright forward and up in normal occlusion group, while inclining back and low in anterior cross-bite group. The tops of tongue dorsum sites were at the border of soft and hard palate in normal occlusion group. While in anterior cross bite group, the tops of tongue dorsum sites were at the border of uvula and soft palate. In anterior cross-bite group, the tongue-to palate distance was bigger than that of normal occlusion group (P<0.01).However,both length and height of the tongue had no significant differences between two groups (P>0.05).ConclusionsIn anterior cross-bite patients, tongue positions were lower than that of normal occlusion people.

Objective To investigate the effect of sevoflurane anesthesia on the cognitive function and phosphorylation of tau in hippocampal neurons in amyloid precursor protein (APP) transgenic mice. Methods Male APP gene mutation mice, weighing 18-22 g,aged 8-12 weeks, were used in the study.Forty-four APP positive mice were randomly divided into 2 groups (n =10 each):sevoflurane group (group AS,n =28) and control group (group AC,n =16).Forty-four APP negative mice were randomly divided into 2 groups:sevoflurane group (group S,n =28) and control group (group C,n =16).Animals in groups S and AS inhaled 3% sevoflurane for 4 h.While in groups C and AC,animals inhaled pure oxygen for 4 h.Morris water maze was performed 24 h after sevoflurane or pure oxygen inhalation. The phosphorylation of tau at Ser262 and Ser396 was detected by Western blot on 1 day after pure oxygen inhalation (T1) in groups AC and C,and on 1,3 and 7 days after sevoflurane inhalation in groups AS and S.Results Compared with group C,the escape latency was significantly prolonged and the duration of staying at the original platform quadrant was shortened in groups S and AC,and the phosphorylation of tau at Ser262 in group S and phosphorylation of tau at Ser262 and Ser396 in group AS were increased (P <0.05).Compared with group S,the escape latency was significantly prolonged, the duration of staying at the original platform quadrant was shortened and the phosphorylation of tau at Ser262 and Ser396 was increased in group AS (P < 0.05).Compared with group AC,the escape latency was significantly prolonged, the duration of staying at the original platform quadrant was shortened and the phosphorylation of tau at Ser262 and Ser396 was increased in group AS (P < 0.05).Conclusion Sevoflurane anesthesia can aggravate the impairment of cognitive function in APP positive mice and the increase in the phosphorylation of tau at Ser262 and Ser396 is involved in the mechanism.

Objective To investigate the expressions of Na+/H+ exchanger regulatory factor 1 (NHERF1) and β-catenin in extramammary Paget's disease tissue as well as their significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect the protein expressions of NHERF1 and β-catenin in paraffin-embeded tissue samples from 18 patients with in situ and 22 patients with invasive extramammary Paget's disease. Results There was a high expression of NHERF1 protein in 18 (81.82%) invasive and 7 (38.89%) in situ extramammary Paget's disease samples (x2 =7.78,P < 0.01).Statistical differences were observed in the membrane expression rate and cytoplasmic or nuclear expression rate of β-catenin between invasive and in situ extramammary Paget's disease tissue samples (0 (0/22) vs.33.33% (6/18),x2 =8.63,P < 0.01; 81.82% (18/22) vs.44.44% (8/18),x2 =6.08,P < 0.05).In extramammary Paget's disease in situ tissue samples, the expression of NHERF1 was negatively correlated with the cytomembrane expression of β-catenin (ρ =-0.488,P < 0.01),but positively correlated with the cytoplasmic or nuclear expression of β-catenin (ρ =0.623,P < 0.01),and there was a negative correlation between the cytomembrane and cytoplasmic or nuclear expression of β-catenin (ρ =-0.572,P < 0.01).Conclusions There is an abnormal expression of NHERF1 and β-catenin in extramammary Paget's disease tissue, which may be associated with the initiation, progression, and invasion of primary extramammary Paget's disease.
