Objective To investigate the changes in the metabolism of neurotransmitters in different regions of the brain induced by propofol in healthy volunteers using the proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) technology. Methods IH-MRS was performed in ten 20-40 year old healthy volunteers. Each volunteer underwent MRS scan twice. The first MRS scan was performed when they were conscious as baseline control value. The second scan was performed during target-controlled infusion (TCI) of propofol. The target effect-site concentration was set at 3.0 ?g?ml-1. Volume of interest (VOI) included sensory cortex, motor cortex, thalamus, hippocampus and basal ganglia. The metabolites in the spectra included N-acetyl-aspartic acid (NAA), glutamic acid (Glu), GABA, choline compounds (Cho) and creatine (Cr) .Results During TCI of propofol MAP and RR were significantly decreased ( P 0.05) as compared to the baseline value when the volunteers were conscious. During TCI of propofol the NAA content in thalamus and hippocampus, Glu content in thalamus, hippocampus and basal ganglia and Cho content in all the 5 regions of the brain were significantly decreased ( P

Chinese Journal of Endemiology 2010;29(6):637-640
Objective To assess the prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis in adult patients with KaschinBeck disease(KBD) in endemic area, and to investigate the association between KBD and atherosclerosis. Methods B-mode ultrasound was used to investigate carotid atherosclerosis in patients with KBD over 40 years old in Shanhe farm and Shangzhi city and residents in Shuangcheng county in 2009. Ultrasonography images were saved and graded according to intima media morphology. Results The prevalence rates of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with KBD from the 5 villages affiliated to Shanhe farm were 50.0%(26/52),37.3%( 19/51 ),42.5%(30/71 ),58.2% (39/67) and 44.0% (22/50) , respectively. The prevalence rates of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with KBD from the 5 villages affiliated to Shangzhi city were 63.0% (34/54), 45.3% (24/53), 47.2% (25/53), 60.0% (30/50)and 51.9% (28/54), respectively. The prevalence rates of carotid atherosclerosis in people without KBD in the 5 control villages affiliated to Shuangcheng county were 63.9% (46/72),43.1% (31/72),57.1% (40/70),46.9% (30/64) and 53.0%(35/66), respectively. Ten villages in KBD endemic area and 5 villages in control area were investigated. The prevalence rates of carotid atherosclerosis in the 15 villages were standardized and compared by Wilcoxon test. The differences were not significant between two KBD endemic areas and one control( T = 25.0,24.5,all P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in prevalence of atherosclerosis in the 3 areas(x2 = 0.36, P>0.05). Comparing the severity of carotid atherosclerosis in 3 locations, the difference was statistically significant (x2 = 15.28, P < 0.05) and there was significant difference statistically between the subjects in Shangzhi city and that in the control group(x2 = 8.92, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the detection rate of atherosclerosis and the severity of KBD, and similar results in the grade of atherosclerosis and the severity of KBD were found (x2 = 1.88,5.07, all P > 0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rate of carotid atherosclerosis in historical endemic area in Heilongjiang province is not higher than that in the control area.

Bulletin of The Academy of Military Medical Sciences 2009;33(6):519-521
Communicable diseases are the major threats to the health and security of all the people living in Liberia, including UN peacekeepers from China. The most prevalent communicable diseases in Liberia include malaria, HIV/AIDS, acute respiratory infection, sexual transmitted disease, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, tuberculosis, cholera, pertussis, hepatitis, meningococcal disease, typhoid fever, Lassa fever and yellow fever. An insight into the profiles and epidemiology of the above epidemics in Liberia would greatly help peacekeepers with disease diagnosis and epidemic prevention. According to the profiles of epidemics in Liberia and the authors' experience in epidemic prevention in Liberia, the authors recommend that peacekeepers strengthen their epidemic prevention as follows. Firstly, a combined vector control strategy is suggested for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases. Secondly, water safety should be highlighted by water disinfection and regular water quality testing. Thirdly, vaccines, diagnostic reagents and medications should be accordingly outfitted. Then, the awareness of epidemic prevention and individual hygiene should be improved by education and strict management. Finally, the daily life management for peacekeepers is also very important. The epidemic overviews and strategies for epidemic prevention described in this paper are also useful for all the other peacekeepers deployed in Africa.
9.Bone turnover and early parenteral calcium supply in preterm infants.
Journal of Zhejiang University. Medical sciences 2003;32(5):418-422
OBJECTIVETo explore the dynamic change in biochemical markers of bone turnover in preterm infants and the effect of early parenteral calcium supply.
METHODSForty preterm infants were divided into parenteral calcium supply group and control group. Blood and urine samples were collected at 24 h and 11 d after birth. Serum osteocalcin (OC) was measured with ELISA, serum carboxyterminal telopeptide type I collagen (ICTP) with radioimmunoassay, serum alkaline phosphatase (AKP), calcium, phosphate, and urine calcium, phosphate, creatinine with automatic biochemical analyzer. Blood samples were also collected from 22 term infants as control. Calcium gluconate (10%, 4 ml/kg x d(-1)) was administered intravenously in parenteral calcium supply group.
RESULTAt 24 h, serum AKP, ICTP [(147.86+/- 44.87)IU, (57.36+/- 6.34)micro g/L] in preterm infants were significantly higher than those [(147.86+/- 44.87)IU, (57.36+/- 6.34)micro g/L] in term infants, and negatively correlated with gestational age and birth weight (r =-0.528, P<0.01; -0.614, P< 0.01), but serum OC [(648.77+/- 238.89) nmol/L] in preterm infants was lower than that [(851.68+/- 238.69)nmol/L] of term infants, and positively correlated with gestational age and birth weight (r=0.359, P< 0.05; 0.376, P< 0.01). At 11 day, serum OC [947.25+/- 335.47)nmol/L] in preterm infants was markedly elevated and reached the level of term infants [(941.65+/- 297.28)nmol/L], but serum ICTP [(65.44+/- 6.24)micro g/L] in preterm infants was higher than that [(57.10+/- 3.48)micro g/L] in term infants all along. Serum AKP [(246.00+/-66.64)IU] in parenteral calcium supply group was higher than that [(206.53+/- 53.9)IU] in the control group. There were no significantly differences in serum OC and ICTP between parenteral calcium supply group and the control group. Calcium in serum and urine was elevated, phosphate in serum and urine was reduced in the parenteral calcium supply group. Urine analysis and kidney ultrasounds were normal.
CONCLUSIONThere is active bone formation and bone resorption in preterms as compared with terms. Alone parenteral calcium supply during early life can not increase formation of bone protein or decrease degradation of bone collagen, but can elevate serum calcium and urine calcium levels. Hematuria and renal calcification were not found in short duration.
