1.Relationship between health and physical fitness, and the contribution of each element in physical fitness to health for middle-aged and elderly women.

This study determined the relationship between health and physical fitness, and the contribution of each element in physical fitness to health for middle-aged and elderly women. A total of 1, 220 females aged 35 to 64 years participated in physical fitness tests and medical check ups. According to health status, the subjects were divided into two groups ; the healthy group (HG) and the unhealthy group (UG) . Multiple discriminant analysis was applied to the multivariate data. Correct discriminant probabilities of multiple discriminant functions to discriminate the HG and UG ranged from 63.9 to 83.3% among 6 age groups. These results suggested that there was a relatively strong relationship between health status and the level of physical fitness for middle-aged and elderly women. The change in correct discriminant probabilities indicated that degree of relationship would decrease stepwise with age. The contribution of each element of physical fitness to health status was also evaluated by Pearson's correlation coefficient. Age-related changes in the correlation coefficients between the discriminant score representing health status and performance on each physical fitness test demonstrated four different patterns. Therefore, special consideration should be given to the degree of contribution of each physical fitness element at each age level when developing exercise programs to promote health among middle-aged and elderly women.
2.The effects of Acupuncture Treatment on the improvement of Visual Acuity.

The aim of this study was to investigate effects of acupuncture treatment on the improvement of visual acuity.
Six patients (male: 5, femal: 1, aged: 20-24) in the department of Ophtalmology were diagnosed with myopia grevis.
Used acupoints were EX-HN4, Jingming (B1), Hegu (Li4), Feugchi (G20), which were stimulated with the leaving needl techniqe for 10 minutes.
Acupuncture treatment was performed everyweek.
After 10 times treatment, the effect of acupuncture on visual acuity was evaluated.
As a result, three patients showed a remarkable improvement of the visual acuity and others not subsequently, the improved patients observed for 5 to 7 weeks without treatment in order to examine the durability of acupuncture effects.
While, the other three patients were treated with the electro-acupuncture instead of the leaving needl technique.
The visual acuity of the patients in whom acupuncture effective declined without treatment, but their visual acuity was kept at on higher level than before treatment.
On the other hand, the visual auity of the other patients improved by using electro-acupuncture.
These results suggest that acupuncture treatment is effective in improbvement of visual acuity and the effect remains for a certain period, and electro-acupuncture is effective when we do not get effect on vusual acuity with the leaving needle techniqe.
3.Relationship of health and physical fitness in middle-aged elderly men and women.

This study was carried out to determine the relationship between health status and physical fitness, and the contribution of each element of physical fitness to the health status of middle-aged and elderly men and women. The subjects were 889 males and females aged 30 to 69 years. Physical fitness tests and medical check ups were performed. According to health status, the subjects were divided into two groups ; the healthy group (HG, n=348) and the unhealthy group (UG, n=207) . Multiple discriminant analysis was applied to the multivariate data. Correct discriminant probabilities of multiple discriminant functions to discriminate the HG and UG were 70.2% and 68.2% for men and women, respectively. These results suggested that there was a relatively strong relationship between health status and the level of physical fitness in both men and women. The contribution of each element of physical fitness to health status was evaluated by correlation coefficients between the discriminant score representing health status, and performance on each element of the physical fitness test and age. Age and muscle endurance contributed significantly to health status in both men and women. In addition, close relationship was seen between health status and elements of cardiorespiratory endurance, balance, and muscle strength in men, while change in physique correlated with health status in women. From these findings, it was concluded that exercise programs for health promotion in middle-aged and elderly people should be provided separately with consideration of the degree to which these specific elements contribute to health status.
4.Upregulation of epidermal growth factor receptor 4 in oral leukoplakia.

In the present study, we investigate the expression profile of the epidermal growth factor receptor family, which comprises EGFR/ErbB1, HER2/ErbB2, HER3/ErbB3 and HER4/ErbB4 in oral leukoplakia (LP). The expression of four epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family genes and their ligands were measured in LP tissues from 14 patients and compared with levels in 10 patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and normal oral mucosa (NOM) from 14 healthy donors by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Synchronous mRNA coexpression of ErbB1, ErbB2, ErbB3 and ErbB4 was detected in LP lesions. Out of the receptors, only ErbB4 mRNA and protein was more highly expressed in LP compared with NOM tissues. These were strongly expressed by epithelial keratinocytes in LP lesions, as shown by immunohistochemistry. Regarding the ligands, the mRNA of Neuregulin2 and 4 were more highly expressed in OLP compared with NOM tissues. Therefore, enhanced ErbB4 on the keratinocytes and synchronous modulation of EGFR family genes may contribute to the pathogenesis and carcinogenesis of LP.

5.A case of successful recovery and long term survival from postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock by means of left ventricular support using a centrifugal pump with IABP.

A 49-year-old man who had had severe tripple vessel coronary disease and low left ventricular function (EF=29%) underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. Following the procedure he could not be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) even with an intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP). Left ventricular assist using a centrifugal pump (CFP) together with IABP was then utilized with a dramatic recovery from profound postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock, and the CPB was successfully terminated. The left ventricular function recovered gradually from intraoperative myocardial damage. The CFP was successfully removed at 86 LHB hour and the IABP at 9th postoperative day. At present 12 months after LHB, he reveals no angina. Settting up the left ventricular support using a CFP is simple and not-time-consuming, so this system with IABP is of practical use in the case of unpredicted postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock.

Online databases are crucial infrastructures to facilitate the wide effective and efficient use of mouse mutant resources in life sciences. The number and types of mouse resources have been rapidly growing due to the development of genetic modification technology with associated information of genomic sequence and phenotypes. Therefore, data integration technologies to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of mouse strain data becomes essential for mouse strain repositories. In 2020, the RIKEN BioResource Research Center released an integrated database of bioresources including, experimental mouse strains, Arabidopsis thaliana as a laboratory plant, cell lines, microorganisms, and genetic materials using Resource Description Framework-related technologies. The integrated database shows multiple advanced features for the dissemination of bioresource information. The current version of our online catalog of mouse strains which functions as a part of the integrated database of bioresources is available from search bars on the page of the Center (https://brc.riken.jp) and the Experimental Animal Division (https://mus.brc.riken.jp/) websites. The BioResource Research Center also released a genomic variation database of mouse strains established in Japan and Western Europe, MoG+ (https://molossinus.brc.riken.jp/mogplus/), and a database for phenotype-phenotype associations across the mouse phenome using data from the International Mouse Phenotyping Platform. In this review, we describe features of current version of databases related to mouse strain resources in RIKEN BioResource Research Center and discuss future views.
