1.THE EFFECTS OF COMBINED EXERCISE ON CARDIAC FUNCTION AND ADIPOCYTOKINE CONCENTRATION ACCORDING TO ACE GENOTYPE IN ABDOMINAL OBESE MIDDLE AGED MEN

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exercise on visceral fat, cardiac function, adipocytokine, and NT-pro BNP concentration according to angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) genotype in obese middle aged men. Fifty three obese men (II type: 18, ID type: 20, DD type: 15), ratio of visceral and subcutaneous were over 0.4, were enrolled in the study. The combined exercise program included stretching, resistance training, aerobic exercise, and yoga. The exercise was conducted for 60 minutes, 4 times a week for 12 week period. ACE genotype was determined using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the genetic subtype was classified in three patterns e.g. II, ID, DD. As a results, body weight, BMI, and WHR significantly decreased after 12 weeks of combined exercise in ID type and DD type. Body fat(%), visceral fat and V/S significantly decreased after 12 weeks in DD type. HDL-C and LDL-C significantly improved in II, ID and DD type. Cardiac structure decreased in all genotype and cardiac function increased in DD type. IL-6 and NT-pro BNP, the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, were significantly decreased in DD type, after 12 weeks. Therefore, exercises have shown to be most effective in type DD which is also considered as the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Among all the ACE genotype, DD type requires the most exercise.
2.The Expression of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Protein is an Independent Prognostic Marker in Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: The catalytic subunit of telomerase, hTERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase), is one of the most important components of telomerase, and performs a pivotal role in the mechanism underlying the regulation of telomerase activity in cellular immortalization and carcinogenesis. The principal objective of this study was to investigate hTERT expression in patients with non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs), and to evaluate its clinical significance and association with the expression of p16 and p53. METHODS: Using tissue microarray, the protein expression profiles of hTERT, p16 and p53 were investigated via immunohistochemistry in 167 samples of NSCLCs. RESULTS: Expression was observed in 54.5% (91/167) of the tumors, which were predominantly squamous cell carcinomas. Patients evidencing hTERT expression in their tumors exhibited significantly poorer survival rates than did patients without hTERT expression in early-stage NSCLCs (p=0.0125). According to the results of our Cox regression analysis, hTERT expression proved to be an independent prognostic factor (p=0.006), particularly for squamous cell carcinomas (p=0.019). hTERT expression was not correlated with p16 expression, but was rather associated with the expression of p53 (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that hTERT may perform a function in the progression of NSCLC, and that its detection may be useful in predicting the prognosis of NSCLC patients in the early stages of the disease, as well as in the development of a targeted therapy in these tumors.

3.A Case Report of Gastric Pseudolymphoma.

A 46-year-old female was admitted to Soon Chun Hyang University hospital with a complaint of intermittent epigastric pain. X-ray and endoscopic pictures showed diffase irregular shallow depression which is similar to the macroscopic pattern of the type IIc early gastric cancer. But endoseopic biopsy showed no malignant cell infiltration. Hndoaeopic biopsy plays an important role in excluding the possibility of carcinoma. But operation shoud be considered inspite of biopsy result because malignant lymphoma ean not be completely ruled out. Histopathologic diagnosis was pseudolymphoma of stomach.

4.Effect of Antioxidant Vitamin Supplementation on Hyperbaric Oxygen Injury in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E may protect against the toxic effect of oxygen free radicals that are preferentially produced after exposures to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). This study investigated the effect of vitamin C and vitamin E on serum nitric oxide (NO) concentration and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression on lung after HBO exposure. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200 to 250 g were exposed to HBO at 3 ATA of 100% O2 for 3 hours. The experimental groups were given vitamin C (125 mg/day per rat) and/or vitamin E (50 mg/day per rat) orally, from 5 days prior to the HBO exposure to the day of sacrifice. Serum NO concentrations were determined by measuring NO end product nitrite by non-enzymatic Griess assay. Expression of ICAM-1 on lung was observed by immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: The serum nitrite levels were significantly increased after HBO exposure and were higher at 24 hours after HBO exposure than at 0 h (P<0.05). The expression of ICAM-1 was weak immediately after HBO exposure and enhanced at 24 hours. There were no pronounced suppressive effects of vitamins on serum NO production and ICAM-1 expression induced by the 3 hours HBO exposure. CONCLUSION: The 3 hours HBO exposure induces the serum NO production and ICAM-1 expression on lung. The short-term supplementation of vitamin C or/and E do not suppress the NO production and ICAM-1 expression on lung.

6.Health-related Quality of Life in Accordance with Fracture History and Comorbidities in Korean Patients with Osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to explore health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Korean patients with osteoporosis and to measure the impact of fractures and comorbidity on their quality of life (QOL) using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data with a nationwide representativeness. METHODS: This study was based on 4-year-data obtained from the KNHANES 2008 to 2011. Osteoporosis was diagnosed in 2,078 survey participants according to their bone mineral density measurements using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. According to the World Health Organization study group, T-scores at or above -1.0 are considered normal, those between -1.0 and -2.5 as osteopenia, and those at or below -2.5 as osteoporosis The EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D) index score was used to assess the QOL. RESULTS: Of 2,078 patients diagnosed with osteoporosis, fractures were found to occur at 11.02%. Wrist fracture was the most frequent, affecting 4.52% of the patients, with a significantly different prevalence among men and women (P<0.001). The overall EQ-5D index score was 0.84±0.01 among patients with osteoporosis. With the exception of cancer, the EQ-5D index score were significantly lower for those having osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular events compared to those without the related diseases. CONCLUSIONS: We found that low health utility was associated with previous spine fracture and comorbidities in patients with osteoporosis. In particular, the number of fracture experiences greatly deteriorated the HRQOL in patients with osteoporosis. Thus, prevention of secondary fractures and chronic care model for comorbidities should be a priority for osteoporosis management in order to improve HRQOL.

8.Effects of Nordic Walking on Body Composition, Muscle Strength, and Lipid Profile in Elderly Women.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Nordic walking on body composition, muscle strength, and lipid profile in elderly women. METHOD: Sixty-seven women were assigned to the Nordic walking group (n = 21), the normal walking group (n = 21), and the control group (n = 25). Nordic walking and normal walking were performed three times a week for 12 weeks. Body weight, body mass index, total body water, skeletal muscle mass, percent body fat, grip strength, sit to stand, arm curl, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured before and after the program. A Chi-square test, one way analysis of variance, paired t test and repeated-measure two-factor analysis were used with the SAS program for data analysis. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the weight (F = 8.07, p < .001), grip strength (F = 10.30, p < .001), sit to stand (F = 16.84, p < .001), arm curl (F = 41.16, p < .001), and total cholesterol (F = 5.14, p = .009) measurements between the groups. In addition, arm curl was significantly increased in the Nordic walking group compared to the normal walking group and the control group. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that Nordic walking was more effective than normal walking in improving upper extremity strength.

9.Expression of p73 in Non-small Cell Lung Carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: The p73 is a recently identified homologue of the tumor suppressor gene, p53, and it has been found to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell proliferation. However, its role in the development of tumors is unclear. This study examined the expression of p73 in patients with non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs) to determine its clinical significance and association with the expressions of p53, pRb, and mdm2. METHODS: A total of 183 NSCLCs were analyzed immunohistochemically using a tissue microarray. RESULTS: The p73 protein was expressed in the cell nuclei in 156 (85.2%) out of the 183 cases. There was no correlation between the p73 expression and the clinicopathological variables. However, there was a correlation between the p73 expression and the mdm2 and pRb expressions. Multivariate Cox survival analysis identified tumor size and lymph node metastasis to be independent prognostic factors, but the p73 expression was not found to be associated with the patients' survival. CONCLUSIONS: p73 is commonly expressed in NSCLC and it might, in conjunction with pRb and mdm2, be involved in the development of these tumors.
