This case describes the radiological-surgical correlation of a rare case of osteosarcoma of the rib in a 15-year-old
boy. Successful repair of his chest wall defect using a wire mesh following extensive surgical resection of the tumour is highlighted,such a procedure being the first instituted at our centre.
2.Malignant epignathus teratoma

A baby boy who had a left facial mass detected on antenatal ultrasound was delivered by Caesarian section after foetal distress was detected. Imaging investigations by plain radiographs and MRI showed a large mass with
calcifications, soft tissue, fat and fluid components. A total surgical excision was perfomed and histology examination showed teratoma with no malignant features. Two weeks postoperatively, there was rapid recurrence of the tumour with intracranial involvement and obstructive hydrocephalus shown on MRI. The tumour was inoperable at surgery and the baby subsequently died at 5 weeks of life. This case describes the clinical course and imaging features of a neonatal epignathus teratoma with malignant and aggressive features.

4.Smoking and Hand Dermatitis in the United States Adult Population.

BACKGROUND: Hand dermatitis is a common chronic relapsing skin disease resulting from a variety of causes, including endogenous predisposition and environmental exposures to irritants and allergens. Lifestyle factors such as smoking have been implicated in hand dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between tobacco exposure and hand dermatitis using the 2003~2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. METHODS: Data were retrieved and analyzed from 1,301 participants, aged 20~59 years, from the 2003~2004 NHANES questionnaire study who completed health examination and blood tests. Diagnosis of hand dermatitis was based on standardized photographs of the dorsal and palmar views of the hands read by two dermatologists. RESULTS: There were 38 diagnosed cases of active hand dermatitis out of the 1,301 study participants (2.9%). Heavy smokers (>15 g tobacco daily) were 5.11 times more likely to have active hand dermatitis (odds ratio [OR], 5.11; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39~18.88; p=0.014). Those with serum cotinine >3 ng/ml were also more likely to have active hand dermatitis, compared with those with serum cotinine ≤3 ng/ml (OR, 2.50; 95% CI, 1.26~4.95; p=0.007). After adjusting for confounding factors such as age, atopic diathesis, occupational groups, and physical activity, the association between tobacco exposure and active hand dermatitis remained significant. CONCLUSION: Smoking has a significant association with the presence of active hand dermatitis. It is important to consider smoking cessation as part of management of hand dermatitis.

5.Clinical Aspect of Arthrocentesis.

The temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis is indicated the `closed lock' due to anterior disc displacement without reduction. It can be easily carried out under local anesthesia with little complications. We performed arthrocentesis to the 24 patients, 9 patients who suffered from acute or chronic closed lock with anterior disc displacement, 2 patients from temporomandibular joint dysfunction related to systemic disease and 13 patients from joint dysfunction with pain. We present the common clinical aspect of arthrocentesis that operator can be easily faced with and possible modifications of this method.

6.Research on COVID-19 vaccination strategies in Singapore.

As of December 31, 2021, Singapore reported that 4 758 601 had completed at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccination, 4 714 655 had completed two doses of COVID-19 vaccination, and 2 207 341 had received one booster shot of COVID-19 vaccine. This article analyses the current performance of COVID-19 vaccination in Singapore, interprets the content of Singapore's National Vaccination Programme, and systematically introduces specific measures of COVID-19 vaccination in Singapore, such as door-to-door vaccination, vaccination differentiated management, and self-payment of medical expenses for those who refuse to be vaccinated, to provide reference for the COVID-19 vaccination in China.

8.Bacterial diversity of the abandoned Mamut Copper Mine in Sabah, Malaysia and its correlation with copper contamination

Aims:
The former Mamut Copper Mine, acid mine drainage site represents an anthropogenic altered landscape
characterized by its acidic topsoil which is contaminated primarily with copper. Even though the mining operation was
ceased at 1999, the bacterial diversity in this area has never been investigated. This study was conducted to ascertain
the bacterial diversity of this abandoned copper mine and correlate it to the copper concentration in the soil.
Methodology and results:
Soil samples were collected from 7 sites near the mine pit and the vicinity. Soil samples
were assessed for soil copper elemental concentration using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry
and bacteria were isolated via serial dilution followed by culture on nutrient agar plates. Phylogenetic analysis was done
based on the full-length sequences of 16S rRNA gene. Twenty-four phylotypes were obtained from the 7 locations which
originated from the phyla Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. The results of the study
indicated that site 2 (6.030223°; 116.658030°), located in between the mine pit and the mine factory with a copper
concentration of 88.96 ppm, possessed the most diverse bacterial community with a Shannon diversity index (H) of 1.68,
evenness (EH) of 0.94 and richness (S) of 6.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
Current study revealed that there was a positive correlation between
the copper concentration and the H index and the richness, but this was not reflected in the evenness. This is the first
report of bacterial diversity from the former Mamut Copper Mine site. The data provided a valuable insight for the future
monitoring of the bacterial community in this ecologically important niche.

9.The effect of simulated copper stress on genes associated with the metabolism of polyphosphates and polyhydroxyalkanoates in Bacillus thuringiensis Y1

Aims:
Bacillus thuringiensis Y1 is a copper-tolerant bacterium that can serve as a model for the elucidation of the mechanism of energy metabolism under simulated copper stress. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of simulated copper stress on the genes associated with the biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PAH) and the metabolism of polyphosphates (PP).
Methodology and results :
The gene expression study involved the growth of the bacterium in nutrient broth supplemented with two concentrations of copper sulphate (0.4 mM and 0.8 mM), followed by RNA extraction and
quantification of four and 11 genes associated with the metabolism of polyphosphate (PP) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PAHs) respectively, using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Three genes associated with polyphosphate metabolism, which are polyphosphate kinase (ppk), exopolyphosphatase (ppx) and NAD kinase (ppnk), were all shown to be upregulated by both 0.4 mM and 0.8 mM copper, except for the 5’-nucleotidase (surE) gene that was downregulated under the second treatment. Among the 11 genes associated with the metabolism
of polyhydroxyalkanoates, only the 3-ketoacyl-CoA-thiolase (phaA) gene was upregulated in both treatments and highly expressed in the second treatment; the majority were downregulated and repressed.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
The study demonstrated that copper induces the metabolism of polyphosphates in B. thuringiensis Y1 that serve as an alternative source of energy under copper stress. This model can be extended to the study of other species of Bacillus under environmental stress.
10.Prevalence Of Respiratory Symptoms And Pulmonary Function Status Of Restaurant Workers

The cooking process may emit toxic compounds and airway irritants from both the fuel combustion and cooking fumes which is harmful to the respiratory health among the restaurant workers. A cross-sectional study of 243 restaurant workers from the selected restaurants in Sungai Long, Malaysia was conducted. The standardized British Medical Research Council questionnaire on Respiratory Symptoms (1986) was used during the interview to access the symptoms and the spirometry test was performed to evaluate the pulmonary functions of the participants. The data of socio-demography and occupational characteristics were also collected. The most complaint respiratory symptoms by the restaurant workers were breathlessness, which accounted for 33.7%, followed by wheezing (14%). The mean values of all pulmonary function tests (PFT) of the restaurant workers were within the normal range (>80%), except for the Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) (79.09%). The results of the bivariate statistical analysis, Chi-square, ANOVA and t-test, showed the determining factors of the respiratory health among the workers were workers’ age and gender in addition to the working duration and the ethnicity. The restaurant workers in Sungai Long were at risk of developing respiratory symptoms and lower pulmonary function values due to prolonged exposure to cooking fumes. Emphasis should be given to the safety and health of restaurant workers and health education should be provided to the restaurant workers and owners. Strategies to increase notification of such occurrences among these workers should be looked into by related agencies in the country.
